New instrumental - "A Song for Renee"

Hi all,
I've just completed a new one...   I actually wrote this tune for my wife about 20 years ago as a simple piano piece, so hadn't created a full "band" production for it until now.   I guess you could call it a mid-tempo ballad, fairly straightforward with a few tempo changes but 4/4 all the way through, a few simple melodies and the obligatory guitar solo.

Thanks!

Hard not to like this! The bass in particular is very tasteful, and guitar leads appropriately soar. A little Cirque du Soleil in here, mixing the strings and the elec guitars to great effect.

You have some cymbal rolls happening, how'd you get those done so nicely? Real drums, or ?

Thanks, Tom!  The bass was added right after the piano, before layering everything else on, so good to know it's still "there"!  And yes, a little Cirque du Soleil/TSO rock-orchestral thing is sorta what I was going for.  As for the cymbal rolls, that's just AD2 with velocity ramps.   Fairly precise velocity ramps.

Wow Steve, this was really good! I tried to listen to this like 5 times and could not get SC to work on a few of my devices. I got it now though...finally!

Man, I need to start checking more people out. I never knew you played guitar this well. Mix works for me too.

If I had one small crit, I'd probably cut a little mid range out of the piano as it sort of filled things out a bit too much....which may have been what you wanted. The cut of mids at around 640 would have allowed some of the other instruments to shine through a little more along with the piano. It's not a bad thing...again, just me giving you a subjective view if I were mixing this. :) Well done brother!

Hi Steve, very nice tune and tones, nice bit of shredding in the middle and a nice change of pace at the 3 minute mark.

Thanks, Rikkie!  The "shredding" comment isn't something I would normally associate with my playing, but I appreciate it.

Thanks, Danny!   I appreciate that.  I actually did emphasize the mids a bit in the acoustic piano so that the other elements could sit "outside" it, but will have another listen (particularly those low mids) just to be sure.   Good catch.
But more important, yes, you definitely need to check out the work that floats around this forum - there's plenty of quality tunes available in so many styles.

That was cool Steve. Melodious ballad beginning, nice piano sound, kinda different from the Grand Piano.
Cool transition to rock guitar and nice repetitive phrases which kept me hooked on to the track till the end...

always a pleasure to hear a new one from you
the tune itself is top-notch although for some reason it reminds me of 80s US TV show theme...
i'm getting terrible thump from the bass/piano on my system, which as nobody else has highlighted i'm assuming is my room!
edit- is better on phones but still the (open E?) bass note from aroudn 0'58 is a little overpowering
once the solo kicks in opens up in a great way
mix is a little mid-heavy overall but nothing major. cool stuff

Thanks, Mark!   I originally wrote in the mid-90's so you actually may not be that far off.        I did wack the low E on the bass a little so that could be part of what you're hearing.   I'll have to re-listen...

    Hi Steve,

I actually saw this a couple of days ago when I swung over to your SoundCloud page to see if you'd created any new tunes. For some reason I didn't spot your post here (it may have been on page 2...)

Lovely song this Steve. Such a grand piece. Some great guitar solo work in there too.

Production is up there with your best and which is what I have come to expect since I have been following your work.

    cheers

Yes, I think EPIC is the right word. A beautiful gift for your wife. May you both enjoy it for many years to come.

I will add that I also love the AAS Lounge Lizard, and almost every song I do has (at least) one track that uses it. It may be my favorite VST instrument ever.

Great job on this. It builds nicely and the guitars remind me of Trans Siberian Orchestra. Loved it from beginning to end!

Very emotional tune Steve.  Great guitar tone and nice chops!  I wanted to hear the song take off in a weird direction about 2/3 of the way through, but that's just me.  Maybe think about keeping the melody centered.
Great background instrument choices.  Keep up the good work!
