New instrumental - Badiya Ghar (v2)

Somewhere between ethnic and electronic: https://soundcloud.com/steve-cocchi/badiya-ghar

I had a fun time layering on the synths with this one.  Three for percussion, two for bass, and so on and so one.

Edit: Courtesy of some great feedback below, I've uploaded a new version with about 25 seconds worth of new material.  Thanks!

Interesting, I hope no cats were harmed in the recording? How did you come up with the name Badiya Ghar? Did you know it's an anagram for BAD *** HAIR? Sorry, merely an observation not a political statement and without intent to offend,

Interesting, this may sound like a strange question is it complete?

I enjoyed what I heard but it felt like it needed to go somewhere and it nearly got there but did not quite make it.

@Robbie - thanks.  No cats were used in the recording process, but outside of that I cannot say.    The name came from using online translators with words like desert, sun, cavern, etc., until I found something I liked.   Of course, afterwards I couldn't help but have EWF's "September" in my head...

@Wookie - not a strange question at all.  I guess i considered it complete "enough", though I'd be curious to know if you envisioned anything specific?  I actually was thinking about extending it in some way, maybe, but figured I'd get it out there first just to see if or how it sticks.

Steve it just feels like it wants to go just that little further to finish the story or perhaps that is it the story is as yet unfinished.  I got the slight feeling of question and response and it felt like there was still and unanswered question.

@ Ralph - Thanks, I appreciate that!  I'm glad you liked the combination of instruments and sounds... that's something I really like doing, especially if I have a "theme" to work with.

@ Makke - Thank you!  I found the image after the fact but that is the idea I was going for... particularly the slower section, like camels slowly bouncing their way through the desert.

@ Wookie - perfect, thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for.  I may have found a transition spot right after the slower "camel" section and before the sustained chords that lead to the outro.   I'll have to play with that a little.

@ James - Thanks!  Lots of basses to choose from in Komplete.    :)   And I'm a sucker for transitions of all kinds, so I'm glad that aspect is working.

Some songs take you from the beginning to the end, and some are just part of the journey, like a canoe trip that just shows you part of the river.  I love the exotic vibe this gives and the classy arrangement.  There's a textural gold mine here!

Thanks, Lynn!   Yeah, "completeness" can be a nebulous thing, no doubt.   I may try to extend this one a little but I also like the idea of the canoe trip.   Or maybe it's both.   Hmmm...    Anyhow, thanks for the comments - exotic I was definitely going for, but I will certainly take classy gold mines too.

Lotsa nice thingys going on here.  However, I would say that unless you introduce some type of vocal or lead instrumental I wouldn't extend it.  What you have in the tune, imo, allows it to be interesting for the 3:22.  Does that make sense?  So much electronic music, again imo, goes on and on and would be great if it was behind a video or something but alone it gets redundant.  Not this one......yet.  Trust me, I know everything.  Ouch, my wife just slapped me for lying again.  LOL

I like meandering instrumentals that keep adding new textures but don't necessarily go anywhere in the sense of conventional song structure. You've got a great handle on combining and balancing complementary tones. And yeh, that bass patch is perfect. The whole mix is very good.

The only thing I'd look at is that it peaks dynamically too early and never builds back up again. I'd consider bringing in percussion again near the end. It could still wrap up quietly like it does, but that ethereal ending would be even more dramatic if it came down from a big crescendo. Just an idea.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

@Warren - Thanks.  I'm still throwing ideas around, but yes, what you said does make sense and I tend to agree.  There needs to be something going on other than repetitive repetition!  No plans to go down that road but it's good to have the incentive.  Now put a little ice on that slap mark.

@Bit - Thanks!   Conventional song structure had little to do with this one but lotsa layers of "stuff" certainly did.  Funny you should mention percussion near the end though... I was thinking of some typical Darbuka/Table rhythms leading out but didn't have anything appropriate loaded and didn't want to load another synth - laziness I suppose.  I may need to revisit that decision.

@Robert - Thanks, sometimes I'm all about oddball and different.   OK, often.   It's good to know there's some culture coming through which was important.

@Wayne - Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed the (short) journey.   And to paraphrase a current popular song, "I'm all about that bass, 'bout that bass".

@Tony - Thanks, I appreciate that!  It wasn't a "simple" mix, but certainly fun to do.

Nice piece Steve! Agree a little with Bit that it builds too quickly, then sort of peters out, but it sounds excellent. Great mixing as well.

Steve , this song brought a smile to my face for a lot of reasons ….
all last week I watched The Mummy on AMC just to see the scene where Rachel Weisz had the veil covering her face and her eyes were glowing . I was able to get there in less than 60 seconds flat listening to your tune
anyway, back to your song .
Yeah , this is great that you are doing this type of thing . You can experiment with new sounds and styles , stretch your chops , have a little fun and who knows where something like that can go ...
I did enjoy this for what it was as it played …I'm not gonna offer any crits because it's not my place on this type of thing
I heard a couple of sections thematicly that could have easily sat well in a film or a visual presentation.
    cool stuff man

Sounds killer Steve, lots of space and depth. Sounded great on my speakers too.

@Dan - Thanks!  It was a fun though very specific mix so I'm glad it's translating.  FWIW, I've already added about 15 seconds worth of new material before the long outro section and added some percussion to the first part of that too.  Just based on these first changes I fully agree that it was the right thing to do.   Rev1 coming soon...

@Kenny - I know exactly the scene you're referring to, where she first wears the traditional garb in the market place.  Yeah, I've seen it a few times too.    So it's nice to know that the tune invokes that general feel since I have a strong association between the first two movies and that general Middle Eastern flavor.  And yes, it was most definitely a fun piece to do.

@Marco - Thanks!  Space and depth can be difficult attributes to get completely ITB, so I'll certainly take 'em.

Not much to add that hasn't been said.  I really liked what I heard.  This number really builds a cinematic landscape.  Sounds like a James Bond scene to me.  You know where he's trying to stealth up on a bad guy in a mid-eastern bazaar.

Nicely done - I'm a sucker for music that pulls from as many sources as possible. The only thing I missed was a full-on tabla spasm at some point, but maybe that's my baggage left over from working with Karsh Kale, where there will *always* be a tabla solo given the opportunity.  The song certainly doesn't need it. So, yeah....well played, sir.

@Freddy - Thanks!   I like the James Bond reference.   I might actually use that as a future mental/visual reference.

@Conrad - Thanks, I appreciate the the eclectic aspect which was certainly one of my goals (often is).  The section before the ending does have some slightly spastic percussion happening, but isn't a table solo per se.  Another one I'll have to keep in the memory banks.  I'm thinking tabla over crunchy metal guitars...
