New instrumental tune - Chromatakish

Hi y'all...  Haven't had much time in the studio (or around here) lately, but I've finally finished up a new instrumental semi-prog/metal tune after many weeks' worth of little bits here and there.

https://soundcloud.com/steve-cocchi/chromatakish

I once again used Craig's CXA amps for guitar and bass tracks; Loom, Z3TA2 and Absynth on the synth side; and I finally got to use the AD2 Metal kit that I chose as part of the Platinum upgrade.

Edit: Version 2 at the same location.

Edited edit: Version 3 at the same location.

Nice!  It brings to mind Adrien Belew and King Crimson.  CA's fx chains are working here, too.

@Lynn - Thanks, Lynn.  I never would have thought King Crimson or Adrien Belew, but heck, I'll take those references any time.   :)

@Daryl - Thanks, Daryl.  Yeah, it certainly took some time to get the details "right".  And I've found that mixing this type of genre sure aint easy...

@Grant - Thanks, Grant.  I am glad you enjoyed it!

@Clint - Thanks, Clint.  I appreciate that.  Fortunately AD2 had some good grooves as a starting point, and I got lucky with the synth solo as it was a rare one-take.

Hold on...got to pick up my brain, it just leaked out...

Okay, much better. Wow! That is some powerful stuff. At first, I thought the guitars (panned L/R) were slightly too dark, but in the context of the mix after everything else came in, they were pretty spot on. Drums sit perfectly, synths are awesome. Wouldn't change a thing.

    Thanks, Dan!

I did struggle with the guitar tone a bit because I just naturally hear them brighter as well, but with everything else I did think they needed to support a bit more.  Glad to hear that the decision seems to work.

Very cool Steve! It's not the easiest thing to play tight when you're following a drum track like that, so kudos! Mix sounded good to me too. If I had to nitpick, I would say that I would've liked hearing another slow break inserted in the middle of the song, like you have there towards the end. I really like it though. Nice job!

Thanks, Bob!   Yeah, it's certainly not easy...  While the two guitar parts + bass aren't playing quite as tight as I'd like, with everything else going on I'm fortunate that the masking effect comes into play.

Interesting idea with adding a slower middle section like the end.   Or maybe coming back in after the end.  Things to ponder...

Pretty freakin' good for a one-take!  Reminiscent of some of the heavier sections on my favorite Tull and Yes albums.  And the slow section at the end is genius.  Rock on.

Dang man...did you do a few red bulls before you played this :).....great fast moving music. Puts me in a kind of higher thought zone...or makes me think this is what a bunch of guys who majored in music might play  on the weekend. It is pretty much the opposite of loafing around in the country bar listening to Waylon ( that ain't me BTW).
I like the energy it has...you has some pretty good guitar chops going on!

    - Thanks, Tim!   No red bull involved... though now I'm tempted to give it a try.      Based on feedback above I am working on a rev B that adds a bit of down-time after the synth solo just for a small (still non-Waylon) break...  before cracking that last can open.

    - Thanks, Ken, much appreciated.   As a long-time prog fan (1974 to be exact) it's always there, lurking in the background...

Hi All, I've just uploaded v2 to Sound Cloud...    I added a short "slow interlude" after the synth solo, some guitar at the end for added depth, and a bunch of small edits & tweaks along the way.   Thanks.

    cool metal prog...
reminds me a bit of DT mixed with utopia

maybe some more clarity on the bass guitar track (some high end whack)

    fun listen!

    Right... I'm back

Nice work Steve... If I could "like" it again at SoundCloud I would do. It has a kind of "live feel." Love the mad keyboards at 1:15

    cheers

Gonzo - Thanks!  DT are definitely a favorite of mine, and an influence on just about anything I do that's remotely "metal"... so I appreciate the reference.  The bass does have some edge (courtesy of a CX-A FX Chain), but I can certainly try tweaking it a bit.

Andy - Thanks!  I do tend to go for a live feel with a lot of my stuff so I'm glad that comes across.  And thanks for the mad keyboard solo comment - that was a single take, though it's certainly not without it's oopsies... I've been soooo tempted to edit the timing in spots but I guess it might be a little less mad if I did that.

That really moves along doesn't it?  Great tune and playing.  Perfect title choice with all those chromatics.
I wouldn't mind a little more sonic energy from the kick drums, maybe a boost in the 40hz's so you can feel them a bit more.

Thanks, Mark!  Much appreciated.   And yes, the title kind of wrote itself.

Maybe I will go for just one more mix to add a bit of kick thump and bass edge...

For my taste (in this genre) I would try for a little more bite on the main riff guitars. Seems a bit low mid heavy. Of course that may be what you wanted and you can ignore my ramblings.

Overall great energy and movements galore.
