New mic: Røde NTK

The postman was just here (actually he was drinking coffe with my wife when I got home, how's that for ya? )
And my package with a Røde NTK had arrived.

Pretty solid stuff, I presume. The mic was actually so heavy my "Ikea modified lamp/mic swing stand" had to get a new spring to hold it up.

I was actually looking for a NT-1 or similar when I came over this. Looked completely perfect, the Røde shockstand was also included.
Was about 8kg in shipping weight though!

Anyone else have experience with it?

I have had an NTK for years and like it very much, not that I have much of a basis for comparison.

What is amazing is Rode's customer service. The first time I spoke to them, I'd knocked the stand over (easy to do when the mic's so heavy!). The capsule was all bent. They fixed it free of charge. The second time was about 5 years after I bought the mic, and the cable had a problem. They just sent me a new one!

Love the Rode Microphone, I have a NT1a and have used The NT2a and I have owned an NT3.  I'm from Oz where these microphones are made, it is amazing the quality vs the cost.  We get NT2a's here in OZ for $500 and the Nt1a's with shock mount for a CRAZY $350.

Good luck with your new microphone.

Ben:

In Norway, we pay about 400 $ (US $ that is) for the NT1a package (popfilter and the shockmount included, think its called "aniversity" or something)
In the US, it about 190$....

The NTK is about 750-800$, i bought it for just over 300$...

And actually, the N2a is just about 50$ more than the NT1a here in Norway

I had a couple of NTK's,but I found that I prefer the NT1000 into a good tube preamp...

I have a few Rode Mics....6 x NT1000,6 x NT3 and 4 x NT5...

They are very good quality mics that are seriously underated.....

What tube preamp do you use for your NT1000?

And, what did that combo do better than the NTK?

I noticed some inherent noise in the NTK and I achieved better results with an NT1000 into a tube preamp ...

"And what does that combo do better than the NTK?" .....It sounds better

The main tube preamps I use are modded Studio Projects VTB-1's...These are Neve preamps in disguise...

I have quite a few of them and I like their modular flexibilty...The pre's in the TC Impact Twins are also very good..

There's a lot of snobbery regarding studio hardware and many people are listening with their eyes

I used to live in Nashville and a friend of mine - a fantastic guitar player - took two of my VTB-1's along to a recording session at a very high end studio....

The engineer had the usual stack of "exotic" mic pres there - API's,Telefunkens,Avalons etc - and like most people who like to spend a ton of $$$ on that stuff,he told my friend to forget about using that cheap crap and just plug into some of his expensive boo teak gear...

Well - my friend went with the humble, modded VTB-1's instead...

The next day, that same engineer went out and bought 8 VTB-1's

A blindfold shootout with a few "golden ears" featured the usual high end preamps plus a VTB-1 and the VTB-1 came in second behind the $$$ Chandler EMI pre...

I once had a conversation with a guy who was the engineer for Per from Roxette and they are incredibly particular about their sound...

He told me that one of Per's most favourite microphones is the Rode NT1000....

I'm sure that you will enjoy using the NTK...It's a great mic...I just prefer the flavour of the NT1000....

I found the RODE NTK harsh on vocals. I sold mine.

I know the lead singer from Nickleback supposedly uses the NTK.

I got some good vocals out of it though, but I got it mainly for me, and on my voice, it just seemed harsh.

I really like it on acoustic guitar though-

I've had a Rode NT1 for several years and have always really liked it.

I've been considering a tube mic, and keep looking at either the NTK or the K2 (Haven't actually tried either)

I bought a Shure KSM44 a number of years ago...and my choices had come down to either that or the K2...I don't regret the KSM44 at all....but would like to try a tube mic

The mic is a mixed bag. Part of the frequency spectrum is really nice, the other part, the high end, not so much. I sold mine as well.

Gear: A bunch of stuff.

Ah, I have no chance to get at the high ends anyway

I've recorded on a version of nt-1 mics and like it better than the ntk.

you say you dont get too high. i hav a very powerful 4 octave range and often sing high tenor vox so yeah harsh for me.

lower vocals, or mid range like nickleback should do well with the ntk
