New motherboard + CPU replacement

Guys,

I would like to increase my computers performance. I currently have an AMD 64 Athlon. The case is ATX. I have two questions will any motherboard labeled ATX going to fix and work? Is all power connectors the same? Secondly, what are the chances that my existing drivers and OS will boot? I'm assuming the OS will be a problem?

Thanks

Rick

Yes any atx motherboard will fit in your atx case. There are 9 screwholes in the board that correspond to screwholes in your case.

There are motherboards with 20 pin connectors and motherboards with 24 pin connectors.

Most atx powersupplies have a 20+4 pin connector, so you can connect them to both kinds of motherboards.
    Check your powersupply.

Do you think the OS would boot up off the old drives if I went from an Athlon to a Dual Intel? I'm running XP Home

    Hi rickms,
I've done that several times, but going from Intel to Intel motherboards/CPU. As far as parts go, as Zonno says, you're probably okay. Drivers and OS, probably not. If the new motherboard has a different chipset than the old one (and your's most likely will) than you need to reinstall the OS. You might be able to get away with a repair install, but I doubt it, especially if you are going from AMD to Intel. Other more learned members of the forum can chime in here, but if it was me I'd do a reinstall of the OS. You'll be assured of a more stable system that way in the long run. Just my 2 cents....

I understand thanks. Installing and configuring all my applications would take a few days. Not really looking forward to that.

changing a mobo and cpu will require a clean install of OS. Remember, the current configuration of your OS is based on your installed mobo.

Er actually no, you don't have to re-install. Only re-activate.

I've just upgraded Mobo and CPU this afternoon. You'll have to let Windows re-recognise your USB connected devices etc, but it should be no problem. It will search out the already installed drivers, if you let it.

No problems otherwise, very smooth in fact.

    Cheers,
