New original song - Abigail

Hi folks
Here's a new one that I just finished recording.
Hope you enjoy - nits and crits welcome.

https://soundcloud.com/skyblueproductions/abigail

Abigail
Written and performed by Staypress (daryl1968)

Verse 1
There was a time, before my prime when friends were hard to come by
I must admit, it hurt a bit and made me wonder why

Prechorus
Before you appeared my life was a mess
I was a loner I have to confess
Then you found me and opened my eyes
I learned to love to my surprise

Chorus
Abigail, you beautiful thing
You light up my day in a wonderful way and never ask for a thing
Abigail you beautiful thing
There's never a day when you don't make me say
'You make my heart sing'

Verse 2
I found it hard to be off my guard - quite a sad existence
So in you came to shelter from the rain, the path of least resistance

Prechorus

Chorus

Middle bit
I fed you
I bathed you
i had you spayed
You're such a great cat I'm glad you stayed

Chorus to end

I have to admit I jumped out of my chair when you said *I had you spayed*.  haha  (didn't know it was about your pussy until then).  I don't know what it is about your voice Daryl, but everything always sounds like squeeze, madness, or petshop boys , sorry to pigeon hole you!  meow.

Cool song...in the spirit of "Martha My Dear".

Overall, the mix is quite good, however, in the quieter sections, the voice high end sounds just a little too brittle. Sounds great when everything else comes in. I'd suggest automating an EQ curve to soften it a bit when things are sparser.

Dan

Catchy chorus, nice sparse arrangement, cool vocals plus harmony, very slick modulations right at the end! Yes, with a twist as well.

Your songs always seem to hit the target between quirk and pop - perfectly. Well done again.

My only crits are 1 billion percent subjective as far as the arrangement of things go. For me it was a little too sparse. I'd take your bass notes and let each sustain longer, where you have clipped them. And other times, I wanted to hear a pad sound underneath your vocals (occasionally you throw a psycho space organ underneath, which I quite liked) just to help fill things out. But I can tell you didn't want to fill things, you were going for sparse. Nailed it.

The chord sequence you cooked up here is a fantastic fit for your melody, particularly in the chorus. Cool songwriting indeed, in a nice, distinctly separated mix.

Another classic from Staypress, I must admit I smiled when you hit the spay and cat lyric, before that I thought it was about your dog.  The production as ever is nice a clear, though I thought the thump (kick) in the opening phrase was perhaps a little to present.  The lyric does sound a little fragile in places perhaps something, EQ or subtle distortion or even a pad sound, to soften the top end might help.  Thanks for sharing.

Really like this one Daryl, I have to agree the vocals have a bit too much treble going on with them to fit with the rest of the mix. Although full disclosure, I got some new monitor speakers for my PC just a few days ago, nothing fancy but they have a truer sound as to what I am hearing than what I have been using before so I am happy with them. Sounds great! Just a little high treble on the vocals. Or too much clarity, but I am no mix master so take my words as a grain of sand my friend.

Enjoyed hearing this one, you always have some great songs and performances, my favorite will always be "Damned If I Do".

Thanks for sharing the listen! As for my opinion, I'm just trying to be helpful.

Hey Daryl - nice one!

overall this seems like it's got to much "sparkle" - the high end is pretty crispy and almost harsh on me ol' dog ears.

other than that - really nice stuff........for a CAT SONG!

Thanks for the listen and the suggestions Dan.
The current Mrs Daryl1968 suggested making the song about a pet - I think she was feeling a little paranoid.
It was almost about a hamster....true story

I'll have a play with the mix over the weekend but don't tell Bapu as I am meant to be working on a Forum Monkeys song.

I have never heard a song of affection dedicated to a cat.  Creative, quirky, fun, and well done --- what could be better.  I love the sound of the vocals (a bit Beatles-esque) and your delivery of some fun lyrics was very nice indeed!
There is a lot of "sound space" or sparseness in this number but to me that is perfect given the gentle nature of the song.

Great stuff Daryl!

Excellent stuff Daryl, fine piece of songwriting. Like a (and I mean this in a good way)  modern day Gilbert O'Sullivan in it's quirky wistfulness.
