New original song - "Free"

Sorry to be posting again so soon - trying finalize our CD!! This is my first (completed) original song in a while. It's a contemporary Christian song featuring my friend Heath on vocals again, and music by me. Another stripped down acoustic tune, but with a little more embellishment this time. Any mixing input is appreciated. The lyrics are on the Soundclick page if you're interested. I'm not much of a songwriter but I'm pretty happy with this one.

Great song Dave... very well done ... the only thing that bothers me is that dominate 7 (2nd to last note) in the lead line... try a c# instead of the d note...

This is really a great tune.   The dominant 7th does stand out a bit but maybe that really was intentional. Perhaps a 6th would meld better?  Nice work Dave! love the guitar tone and vocals are really swell. The Gem here are those lyrics! Fantastic wording!

    Hi Dave,

Great song, man. Your guitar sounds fantastic.

Love your vocal...especially at the end. Very nice.

It is more like a worship song.  Very nice melody and a quiet reflective song.

Wow!  A 'Sweet Melissa' Intro with a groaning gospel surprise forthwith.

Message is most excellent for my troubled soul.

The acoustics are rich enough to fill the bass end (for my ears).  Vox groaning is unpretentious and surreal (heavenly groaning) this time; this feels totally and expressly from God:

"You have set me free" -- ha ha!

Ah! that famous battle cry that claims eternal victory!  (Like, "It is Finished"!)

You know after 5+ years on the forum, it's still an intimidating thing to post something I wrote. I'm honored and humbled to have so many world class musicians and songwriters critique my work and offer advice.

Frank - yeah that C# 6th is probably more normal. But I like the dominent 7th. Guess I'm weird.

Tap - thank you sir! Lyrics are not my strength. I can't force it. In this case, I came home from church, took a nap, woke up and wrote this song in about 15 minutes. Maybe in another 6 months it will happen again! I'm really glad you like them.

Gr - thanks man! I was happy with how the guitar sounded - it was nice and full and I hadn't changed my strings in a long time. It was even a "one take" track, which never happens for me!

Vicente - thanks! Yes, we plan on playing it in service in a few weeks. I'll try to get a live recording from the board.

    Thanks Scott!

Philip, my man! Believe it or not, I thought about you when finalizing this sound. I actually thought "what would Philip think about these lyrics". You've always given very good advice and don't hold back your opinions, and slowly but surely it's sinking in!! So I'm so glad I got your approval!

Thanks Mark! This was the last song recorded for the CD and I felt we were just starting to get in the swing of things. Guess it's time for the next one!! Actually we are planning on doing some "non worship songs" next, just for fun.

Why thank you Janet! They're not in the league of your strings, but they did help fill it out. And you didn't bash my piano playing programming, so it must have been okay.

    Thanks again everyone!!

    Hi, Dave,

This is really fantastic!  Great songwriting and lyrics, excellent vocals, the guitar and piano sound really good together, and I really like the vocal crescendo at the very end.

Dynamite, inspirational song, buddy, nice work!

    Dave,

Very nice song.  Heath did a fine job (again).  I like the open arrangement, but i do love your bass playing and wonder what it would sound like in the last verse....just my greedy little ears starting trouble again.

    Lovely song!

Bob that means a lot coming from you - thanks a lot!!!

    Thanks Rik!!

Rick - I thought about building it up more (and thanks for the comments on my bass playing!) and when we play it in church we might end up doing that. For the group of songs we're including on the CD, I think it works better keeping it sparse. Thanks for listening!!

Thanks Doug! I'm getting better at getting a good mic placement on the acoustic so I don't have to EQ the crap out of it to get it to sound good. I think this one just has a little low shelving reduction.

Thanks Steve - I agree Heath's vocals are pretty good on this and I appreciate the comments on the mix!

Dave, the songwriting is solid here. I love the very spare piano part. Heath's vocals sound fine. And the listener is sure to tune in to the next song to see what follows. Well done.

Hey steakbone, great tone on that acoustic guitar track. Lots of folks would kill for tone like that... I like the EQ and verb processing on his vox, good job there too. One thing, I would like to have heard this develop a bit more, a bit sooner, but you know me and overblown productions? :-) But I would add a bass, and do so before the keys and pads come in, maybe high and melodic at first, and then bring it down and hold down the bottom when the keys come in... But hey? "Everybody is a producer."

Good job on this. Too bad that guy can't sing high? :-)

Those are some nice, simple, embellishments on the piano Dave. Really added to this song. You've got a deep, warm, recorded acoustic sound goin' on..very nice. One of those tunes where 'less is more'.

Hey Dave, I'm not sure what you were apologizing for as all of your tunes with Heath have been a pleasure to listen to... this one being no exception.  i think Larry beat me to it with the 'less is more' effect, but it bears repeating.  Great tune, vocals, track, mix... what's left after that?  Great job.

Thanks Mark! I can't do much with piano so I'm glad you like it sparse! :)

Yo Robby. I know, I know... you like it to get big quick. I'll post a big production one soon! Actually wrapping up one now. When my church band does this at service, it will probably be a lot like you describe. Thanks man.

Hey Jeff! Long time, brother - great to hear from you! I appreciate the comments.

Wow - both the SMB twins right in a row!! :) Thanks Larry - you definitely give me something to aspire to with the acoustic, and James I will take a mixing compliment from you any day of the week. Thank you!!

Phil - man, I really, really appreciate those kind words! Putting a "song" out there as opposed to an instrumental puts me outside of my comfort zone, so thank you!

Paulo - yeah when I gave him the track with my (very) rough vocal track, I did something different at the end. When he belted out that part, needless to say I was pleased!!

    Hey Dave
GREAT tune! Love the chord progression of the guitar and piano together (thats my favorite part of the song). Really like the smooth tempo of this piece.  Mix/vocals are clean and clear on my end. Again you have mastered the recording of acoustic guitar and capturing that live vibe. GREAT JOB gents!
