New prog/fusion-y instrumental track - Sol Glaciem

Hi all...  just finished my second original track for the year.   Back to my comfort zone this generally falls into prog world, with maybe a little fusion added for spice.

The usual suspects like AD2 along with live guitar and bass are present, as are last-minute newbie additions Ultra Analog Session and TH3 CW.  Also along for the ride: GR5, MJUC, Lounge Lizard, Z3TA+2, Loom, Rapture Session and GPO5.  Oh, and two instances of Eventide's Black Hole for effect after the middle section and at the end.

But the big change for me was taking advantage of the new tempo mapping feature:
- I recorded the main guitar lines without any click trick
- Tempo mapped the project to those audio files
- Simplified the tempos and bit and made a few minor adjustments where needed
- Muted the original guitar track and re-recorded with the new tempo-mapped click track

The end result, I think, is a nice push-pull effect that I personally couldn't have accomplished using a fixed tempo, and including MIDI parts that I probably wouldn't have attempted manually.

Thanks for listening!

Beyond impressive, Steve.  Not only is this wonderfully composed and played but the mix is well put together and very pleasing.  I'm not a super big prog guy -- Yes is about it for me and one of my favorite groups (it's their ability to not only be great musicians but to write wonderful poppy songs and sing great) and of course Crimson -- but I always enjoy something this well done.  This is the most impressive instrumental piece I've heard on this site in a long while -- Bravo!

This made me think of a band that I haven't thought of in years - Todd Rundgren's Utopia.  I had to listen twice just to wrap my head around this because it has enough elements and changes to keep one busy.  This is very cerebral music, and you pulled it off very well, because pieces like this can go South fast.  You created a sophisticated arrangement that showcases your talent, yet it is different from what I've heard of you in the past.  All in all, WOW!

    All the best,
    Lynn

reminds me of happy the man,
    with a touch of zappa,
    and yes.

very cool idea, to just play, and then tempo map it to add the spice

    begs for a vocal.

O my gosh, incredible. II was just watching old concert footage of *Kansas*  the first section had some similarity.  The song constantly evolves,  sort of like watching a film of a flower growing and opening up. Like a lotus if you dig the little baby Buddha.

    Steve!

Man, what a great way to get some human feel into a track. Very cool song and the mix is very well done. There were a couple of very minor spots where I could hear the hi hats sort of stutter where a change in the tempo map occurred. Might be those could be cleaned up, but that's just minor. Well done sir!

Geez, I go away for a day and.......  thanks!!

Allan - I appreciate that!   I've been a big prog fan since the mid-70s but Yes was always my favorite band growing up.  Musicianship, songwriting, harmonies, etc... Always been a big Steve Howe fan too.   Grazie.

Lynn - Utopia, huh...  I like it!  The original basis was very instinctive, but I guess the layers and such would be more cerebral since they're somewhat intentional.  At least that's about as cerebral as I can get.

Rikkie - thanks.  Prog style music just begs (at least in my mind) for bringing together multiple elements.  Hopefully the right elements!

Gabo -  I still have six Dregs albums on vinyl! Free Fall thru Industry Standard.   I think some of that is permanently imprinted somewhere in my brain, courtesy of Mr. Morse & company.

Gonzo - now that is an interesting combination... (shakes head and smiles)    I'm not sure I'd want to (or even could) add vocals, but I will certainly keep it in the back of my mind!   About that UK reference - that was completely unintentional, but now I do hear something, maybe reminiscent of Jobson's work off the first album? (what a freakin' album)

Daryl - thanks, it definitely was a bit groundbreaking for me!  The tempo mapping was easy, the more difficult part (relatively speaking) was deciding when and where to simplify and adjust things.  But once that "natural click track" was in place, recording to it felt so much better than a static click.

David - thank you!  I was also a big Kansas fan during the late 70s, and saw them live during the Monolith and Audio Visions tours.  I wanted to be just like Kerry Livgren (I also had blonde hair and a mustache)

Dan - thanks, I am happy with the way this process added some "humanity flow" to things.   I have a feeling it's going to be difficult not to do the same going forward.    I'll have to go back and listen for those hihats though - ironically, one of the reasons I did simplify the tempo changes was to minimize the possibility of plugin glitches!

yes, that's exactly the album i speak of,
the first UK album, with holdsworth...
i didn't mean to imply that you knicked it or anything,
other than those KINDS of sounds, you obviously dig, and the ethereal quality, the 'unresolved' feel to it...
    very cool.

you should find a vocalist who understands these kinds of arrangements, that would want to collab.
it works fine as an instrumental, but h3ll, if you're going to go there.............?!!

Ol pal - why thank you sir.  I'm afraid there will only ever be one Frankie Z, but I certainly appreciate the thought!

Gonzo - gotcha, I figured it might be more of a "sound/feel" thing as I'm no Jobson/Holdsworth (who is?).  As far as vocals go, I dunno, any thoughts on someone that might know the style and has great vocal chops?

Makke - thanks, I'm glad you liked it!

Very cool stuff Steve, and a great explanation of how you approached the composition, that's food for thought indeed. I think you achieved a 'band' feel by doing that, it has the hallmarks of people playing off each other, which is quite an achievement for a solo track!

It's great to hear that people still can play like this. And the tempo changes are really impressive. Everything about this song sounds difficult!

Being a huge Yes fan, I was reminded of "Awaken" as far as ambiance. It's a very spacious sound you've captured, and you probably didn't have to travel to Switzerland to record keyboard in some cathedral either.

Wookiee - thank you, much appreciated!   And yes, multiple influences were definitely involved on this one, some more intentional than others, but all there in my head either way (did that sound weird?).

James - thanks!  This was the first time I've attempted anything remotely similar, and just based on this one experience I will certainly be changing how I approach recording going forward.  I highly recommend it!

Mark - another Frank reference.... cool!    Thanks, it was a fun one to do.  Appreciate the comments!

Mark - thank you!  Having grown up with prog embedded in my brain, stuff like this is comfortable for me.   As a life-long Yes fan seeing a reference to Awaken in any fashion in OK with me!  Now, if only I could record a masterpiece, perhaps using the phone lines in Switzerland...

I haven't tried the tempo mapping yet, but after hearing what you've done with it I might. I listened to this on nice speakers but at a lower volume, so I might have missed some of the more interesting passages. I'll try and listen later today on my studio setup.
Definitely some great prog music here and falls in line with those other bands mentioned. Great playing on the guitar!
I can hear a heavier guitar in there instead of keys around the middle mark as a solo to jump start the piece, or a more dirty synth. Not really a necessity though. Not the busy stuff, just a basic rock underpinning, maybe detuned slightly...but that's just me.

    Steve,

Great work, very awesome track.   Your tempo mapping really breathes life into this music.  Very easy for these types of projects to go side-ways with MIDI (i.e. mechanical sounding)  None of that here.  Super impressive..

Great stuff. Masterful playing and good melodies is always a good combo. Mix was good. Really liked the sounds too.

I really liked this.  You certainly have the knack of tying up all the tempo changes just at the right junction in time. Makes for a very interesting listen. Great choice of instruments and your guitar skills shine.  I think the production is excellent clear and concise and sounding very good on my headphones. Your following track on Soundcloud was also awesome. You have got it man.
