New prog-metal instrumental: Schectvengit

Hi All,
I just finished a new little prog-metal instrumental tune, clocking in at under 3 minutes total including a 30 second "dreamy soundscape" section at the end.

This one was inspired by some practice lines I came up with to get better accustomed to a cheap, used Schecter 7 string guitar I purchased at Christmas.  Yeah, it feels a little different than a Strat!    As per usual the guitar and bass are live and drums are AD2.  Lead synths are Rapture Pro + Z3TA2 during the main sections, and a different Rapture Pro patch + Absynth during the slightly slower middle part.   Also made use of Valhalla Plate as a drum verb and Rematrix Solo for "special FX".

As always, comments and suggestions are welcome!

That was a wild ride! Great playing and melodies. Guitarriffic! Mix was good imo.

That was 3 minutes well-spent! Nice job with AD2! I doubt that it was intended, but I got some nice Chris Slade feel!

Great stuff Steve!  There's a section around 0:45 where the drums are playing the rhythm used by the guitar/bass and I think your quantize setting might be off a hair.

Mix sounds pretty good as is.

John - Thanks!   Two weeks for three minutes worth I guess isn't too bad.   No, I never would have though Chris Slade, but hey, it is rock and to some extent he is rock.

Daryl - Thanks!  I'm glad you enjoyed the ride.

James - Thank you!  This was actually one of my quicker completions, so I appreciate the comments.

Dan - Thanks!   I'll have to give that spot a re-listen.  There's not a lot of hard-quantizing going on, so it's possible that I may have shifted something a little off.

I didn't post this earlier, because I didn't want to appear to hijack the thread and the song is too good for that. But since Kenny brought up the 7-string again, I figured I'd share this video I found. I don't like the song as much, but it's well played, and shows what one musician can do with a DAW (Reaper, in this case).

Thanks, Kenny!   I'm glad you liked it.  I very much enjoy playing the 7 string, though I've got a ways to go before I'd consider it "comfortable".   But that's OK, I like the challenge and (so far) the results.

No problem at all, John.   I thought it was a great DYI video and showed the various parts nicely.   While the tune itself was OK, the playing was very tight all around.   Someday I'd like to be proficient enough to pull of something like that, both playing and video editing.

    That's cool Steve ,

Yeah I love playing 7 string when I do play it . Right now it is the only guitar I have out on my guitar stand .

One of the things that helped me get comfortable on it was  was thinking of the B string (second string ) and transferring that comfort ability and familiarity over to my low string ...or the A string ( 5th ) if you tune to low A...
I can shred on 7 string  , but I actually prefer to approach my 7 string playing more along the lines of playing it as if I was doing my version of a unaccompanied guitarist wishing he was able to play keys on the guitar by doing a solo finger-style playing type of thing ...
One thing is for sure ...there has been lot's of fret board accidents and collisions with the finga's making wrong turns ....

I think I'm long over due for making a 7 string guitar u tube vid

Hey man good luck , I'm happy for you that you have a 7 string

Thanks!   I actually find myself picking it up the most right now, in part because it's different and in part because I just really like those low notes.        I'll have to give that "string transference" thing a try!

I REALLY liked the guitar/strings combo in this piece.  I am not particularly a fan of massively active kick drums, but that is a style preference on my part, and not a fault of what you presented.

What you did was done REALLY well, and when I was listening through it the first time, my friend happened to hear it and came back and asked me what it was, because he liked it a lot too.

    Very cool.
Very good workmanship, and a good good composition, that kept me interested through the whole track.
And you've done a good job on the drum programming.
And I liked the mix also.
If I should say someting negative, that would be: "I don't like the colour on your shoes", and that doesn't make any sense....

Thanks, Øyvind.  Glad you liked it!

Thanks, Bob!  The kick thing does seem to be part of the style so I just go with it.       I am glad your friend liked it too, always nice to get an "outsiders" opinion.

Thanks, Mesh.  Good to know the mix is coming across.  Given the newness of the 7 string I'd imagine there's more of this genre waiting in the wings somewhere along the line...

Thanks, Wookiee.  And right back at ya!

Thanks, Roger!  I very much appreciate the comments.   Even though my shoes might feel otherwise.

    Steve,
Cool stuff for sure!  Nice chops and the mix came through really well on this end.  The drums are nicely done.  I'm a sucker for lots of change ups so I had fun listening to this and definitely dug the spacey outro, really fun!  Nice work.

This is really nice. I really like the oddity of the second section.

    Very well done!

Thanks, Tom!  I'm glad you liked it.  I also like changing things up from section to section, a by-product of 70's prog I guess.

Thanks, Robert!   Yeah, that second section just wanted to be different from the start - slowing down the tempo a little and creating a slower attack lead tone happened in one fell swoop.  It spoke, I listened.

I dig it.  Love the keys leads and tones.  Needs more guitars though.

Thanks, Pete!   I do have a thing for synth leads over heavy guitar based tunes, maybe at some point I should try the opposite.   And yeah, can there ever be too much guitar?   Didn't think so.

Wow!  Very cool and good mix.  The break between 20-22 sound different to me that the other breaks.  I wonder if there is a way to add some natural air in a break like that?  This may have been your intention and if it is that cool too.  Well done!

Thanks, Tom!  I am glad you liked it.   And yes, that first break was completely intentional - I was shooting for that "overly gated break" thing.   I guess it worked.
