New prog-rock song - updated March 31st

http://soundcloud.com/markhaigh/love-is-blind a prog-rock song, i love the tune, not hugely happy with the mix, needs a bit of Danny or James magic, but hey-ho, nice and tuneful, short, uplifting...what more do you need on a sunny day?!

So you CAN SING! I heard it, on the chorus? I would edit the piano and quantize it, but I'm anal that way with the midi stuff, the way it is gives it a nice natural sound. I liked your song, great guitar work as usual.

All you need is love, just ask the Beatles?

Very creative and unique.  The vocal could have been a bit louder, but it still works.  The chord progression and melody are cool.  Good song.

This is good stuff Mark, I liked it as soon as that piano intro came in, really nice. Not sure about the highly mannered verse vocals, they got a bit wearing after a while, but the choruses are excellent.

This has a very Marillion-esque feel to it, that guitar solo was sublime, and very Steve Rothery (intended as a big compliment, he's in my top 5)

Enjoyed this very much, I'd like to hear more in this vein, you're good at it.

I heard Steve Rothery in it too! Again, very much a compliment. I love the drums too - both the jerky rhythm in the second part, and the overall sound, they really drive it along. Good job!

Robbie - lol don't be leading me on now. the vocals need working and i try, and i think i need a better mike and preamp...oh, and the piano is DI'd from my piano, i tried to MIDI it and quantize but Sonar failed...not for the first time and i am very near to moving DAWS...

It starts out very Emerson Lake and Palmer, with a little Jethro Tull, the vocals arn't that bad the track just lacks punch.

I like it and I love the vocals.

    Cool

    hey mark!
I really love the piano in this, but the piano sound isn't that great and could use some clean up on the sound.

guitars are great as usual with you - maybe a little over the top when everything comes in togther for the choruses - everything starts crowding the space.  you mixed part of the song like you do your metal songs and this is not the same kind of song and should be mixed very differently.

I like your vox in the chorus, but not in the verse.  I understand what you're doing and trying to do, but it's just not my cuppa.

LOVE the guitar solo.  that's where you excel, IMO.  great tone, great presence, great sound.  love that!

    Mark,

Yeah it needs some real production on it. The megaphone verse Vox is too much. Maybe a phrase of two could be cool. Try a double tracked Vox on the verse instead?

Could use a Rick bass sound though.

    Good tune though.

    Hey, Mark,

    Dynamite progressive rocker, my friend!

Nice songwriting, performances and arrangement.  I like the intro and piano breaks, and the guitar solo tone and playing are truly fantastic.  The vocals are really great, especially during the choruses.  I do agree with Ed about the telephone effect throughout the complete verses.  If it were me, I'd use it in the first half of the first verse, and then leave it out of the rest of both verses.  Of course, as always, that's  just a personal, subjective opinion.

Excellent stuff, Mark, very cool song!

Have a great weekend, my friend!

James - a but Rothery, eh? that's nice to hear!
Bill - thanks for listening. I have swapped the kit in the new version, so i hope it's not bad for you!
Ben - I have put a new mix up, a lot better production on this one i think, but...
Reece - ...i have lost the phone effect. all just pure 'the voice' now, which may be too much for some! lol. thanks for your comments, in this new mix i have brightened the piano somewhat, swapped out the kit for a less metal one and toned down the rhythm guitars, also added a few synths - yes i do like to put everything but the kitchen sink in there, which makes it a pain to mix. let me know how you find the new version.

Nice song. The mix sounds good to my ears. The only thing is I find myself wishing the the hits that start after 0:54 and 1:56 etc could seem bigger. I think I would replace the piano instrument with something with more punch. and then make the rhythm more staccato and lower the volume of the piano so that the hits on the bass and guitar etc would punch more. Man this is a good song and I really like your arrangement.

Listened to this the other day, but didn't have time to comment. Coming back today, it seems a bit different, so my commets are part based on memory and part on listening just now. I quite liked the previous fx on the verse vox tbh, though as has been mentioned maybe not on every line. The chorus is really strong. The only thing I found is that I'm not totally convinced that you mean it if that makes sense - sounds a bit held back. Very good arrangement though - always a strong point of yours.

This is great Mark!  Since the piano's so 'bare' in the beginning I could hear slightly just a couple places that need to be moved one way or another.  Just a touch though.  It's a really cool intro, btw.  Love the guitar playing, as always.  And the piano sounds fun to play.  :)  Great song!

    Hi Mark,
I like the sound of the keyboards and way the intro builds , also dig the intro gtr harmony parts.
very nice punchy ensemble playing and hits  underneath the vox.
vox on the chorus sounds good , nice Garry More style gtr solo .
a read over a few things here after I listened to your tune

    yeah ,
this needs more punch on the bottom end , and a redo on the vox first verse.
overall it sounds good . I would keep at it .

Very cool song, Mark.  I loved when the lead guitar came in.  Nice sound.  I would say that the drums (maybe just kick) and the bass could have been a little more present.  Bass seemed to come and go volumewise.  Could just be me.  It is a good bass line.  Hey, mr. vocalist!  Don't you usually do scream metal?  Maybe I'm mixing it up here.  I'll go back and see.  ANYWAY, I really liked this tune.

Ed - who is Rick and where can i get his bass sound (lol....) cheers mate! Bob - well thanks as ever, I have removed the telephone effect totally in the 2nd mix. However, it appears i also removed the bass and drums...so mix 3 will hopefully sort out things totally. Tom - i did think about changing the piano to a more electronic type sound and may well do that, its just after always being a piano riff it was hard to change that totally! gracias for stopping by.

The new mix sounds good. I did not necessarily mean to change the piano sound...just to try to make it more choppy during the 2 sections.

I wish I understood what it means to create prog rock. Like the difference between it and regular rock. Maybe I should look up wiki...

I really like the chorus and it was unexpected from the verse section; which is basically what you want I think, right?

I'm not skilled enough to comment on all the parts, but I really liked how you took very different meters and rhythms and flowed them together in a good arrangement. That was also unexpected for me. The chorus has really got a memorable feel to it.
