New release done completely w/ Sonar

Just completed and released new album done completely with Sonar from start to finish, MIDI to audio. You car hear 9 of the 11 songs at http://www.cdbaby.com/edsummers. Please give me a little feedback if you have the time. Imho, Sonar has got to be the best software for the money. I think the audio engine has been beefed up considerably. You can put a bear of a signal in there without clipping. Been a user since 1.0.

I listened to the sample of 'Til She Came Back', and there is no doubt you can write a fine song. It's difficult to make any comment on quality of the mix because CD Baby is only streaming this as 32kbps.

Speaking from a non-heterosexual, recovering-Catholic point of view - there doesn't appear to be any reason for _me_ to purchase your CD. You've targeted a specific audience with this - an evangelistic straight audience, which is fine. I just wonder how much broader the audience would be if the prose about God was left out of the marketing materials (that goes for others as well - I don't mean to single you out ...). Just like the Church and State should be separated (IMHO), maybe the Church and Music should be separated, unless, as I mentioned earlier, Christians are your specific target.

I also found it a little odd that the very first stanzas on the album appear to be about a separation (or divorce?) of a man and woman. What happened to, "till death do us part"?

Not trying to be nasty here - just pausing for thought.

    Yeah Kev,

You gotta' go with your heart in whatever you do. I guess there's no way to be politically correct across the board. Unless of course you are a politician, if you know what I mean. I respect a person like yourself who comes right out and proclaims who and what they are. And that is what I do on the album. I know I am taking a risk, sale wise. I'll pay for this one way or another. Mostly, I just wanted to make good music. It just so happens that these are the songs that I chose for this project. Stuff that is close to my heart. This stuff is done to encourage & hopefully help in some small way.

Ed - I agree with you completely. Like you, I write songs for me first, for everyone else second.

    Hi Ed

Funnily enough, I live in Hamilton, Ont and (sort of) know someone who knows you.... I take pub. transit and have met (I think) your nephew's GF, and so we get talking about her boyfriend who does music like I do and all..... and she mentions (3 days ago no less!) that his uncle just recently released a CD and I should check it out on CD-Baby and all, and well.....here you are <LOL>

    Small world, eh?

    Hello Steve

Small world when you consider he's up north and I'm in the south. Nice to meet you in the forum. Speaking of small worlds, I got an email from a gentleman in Japan who informed me that a project that I did a while back is now in standard rotation in Europe and Asia to this day. It was odd because it was only played in the Midwest in the states and I thought that was the end of it. It was a tune called "I Can Tell" with a b-side titled "Prepare Yourself". I think this person in Japan recognized the name. Who would have thunk it?

    Ed,

You already know my thoughts on the album, but I just want to put them in writing.

This album is excellent in all respects and I would like to encourage everyone to take a listen to it as well. It has something for everyone, IMO.

    God bless.

FWIW folks..... Ed is like family to me and has been a great friend of many years now! Not only is he a great artist, he is a great person period!

    Hi Ed!

I listened to a few of the snipets at CD Baby. You're a good writer, man, and have a beautiful voice. I love the vocal stuff. Very nice. It's hard to hear much of the production in lo-fi, but I assume it's well done.

As far as content goes--since the issue was brought up--I can tell that this is from your heart. I'll take that over insincerity any day (BTW, I'm not accusing anyone here of being insincere!). I appreciate your transparency: "This is where I am, this is how I'm feeling - and God is making something beautiful out of my painful experiences!" I love that! We all have mangled areas of our lives. Thanks for sharing the real you! God bless you!! (I mean that!)

To all who have responded, thanks

I am sure that everyone in the forum is trying to make good music. Unknowingly we all end sharing a part of our souls. You know that what you do may not be for everyone, but you take the risk of exposure. You feel like you are baring all! And for me, that would not be a pretty sight! I am sure you know what I mean.

Ultimately, you just want to do your very small part in the flow of mankind.

    Ed,
I listened to all of the songs (hi-bandwidth at work). I liked it, so I bought the CD! Great job-great vocals. I hope to be able to write inspiring music like you have some day. For now, I'll thank the lord for my wife & kids and all he has blessed me with.

Sorry for your loss. May you find comfort in God's word, and lean on brothers & sisters in Christ.

    God bless,

I sold my first CD's in Japan through Cdbaby. Slowly others are beginning to buy but the Japanese are right there! I here that European and Asian groups tend to appreciate music a lot longer than the American market.

That must be the case, Ed, since your song is still a hit and in rotation over there after all of these years.

Glad to hear that sales are picking up.

    Hey, Ed.

'Just listened to all 9 clips from your CD on CD Baby. So, now I don't feel so bad... Our CD, Old School Church Vol. 1 is there. Our samples sound terrible, but I gues we're not the only ones --and I'm not bad-mouthing CD Baby. According to this forum, you've sold at least 1 copy of yours there! That's more than I can say for some people. I keep saying that I'm going to turn off the samples at CD Baby and direct folk to samples on our EM website. We'll see... We've been fortunate to hundreds through other channels.

Anyway, the sound of your music takes me back, as well. In the late fifties and early sixties, my older brothers and sister as teenagers were listening to a LOT of Motown and Doo whop. I read through a lot of responses to your posting. No one said anything about the "heavy bass." Anybody that's ever been to a soul party or a soul bar knows about the bass... And God said, "It is good." The vocals and harmonies (yours?) are really quite nice.

Please accept my sympathies RE: the passing of your wife. Your music reflects a lot of emotion and a lot of caring and a lot of quality. Right on, Brotha.
