New rock/prog song - Too Near To See

Hi All,
I've got a new fresh one from the oven, style-wise reverting a bit back to my natural rock/prog tendencies.

The song is called "Too Near To See" and can be found here: https://soundcloud.com/steve-cocchi/too-near-to-see

Hopefully the song translates, but as always, comments, suggestions or otherwise are welcome!

Edit: Second mix posted with some drum tweaks and a bit more reverb.
And lyrics, as requested:

Taken away can we know where we're going to
Within a day with no end till we try
To fill the promise of love that we promised to
Begin the way that we feel that we might

Taken away will we know where we're going to
Or will we see what we want to believe
If it's a matter of time can we find the way
To find the center of our interweave

Too near to see, the bank of the rhythm is hiding, be still
(Still as the wind until you're)
Finding, the will

The day is long and the sky has not given in
Hanging the sun off the night of the song
Back in the day with the love of the older ones
Into the day where we go to be strong

(Back into the)

Taken away and we know where we're going to
Taken away and begin to be clear
To see the way that we seem to be everywhere
And all the time that we know to be near

sounds a bit crossed between happy the man and early genesis....

i really dig this kind of stuff...

the drums seem a bit stiff, but i like the arrangements and choice of beats and fills...
the drums seem to be playing straight time with no swing,
and this REALLY needs the swing elements to open it up...

great solo section, lots of fun!

Yes, yes. . . how can you not like this.  Very cool – the odd timings, syncopation, great playing – love that little pulled descending line that shakes everything up.  It’s such a very cool track – with all the layers it still comes across as very, very clean. Great job and a lot of fun to listen to.

I dig it.  I like the old school prog as much as the newer stuff.

gonzo - thanks, man, early prog is always somewhere in my brain so I appreciate the references.  I'll have to re-listen to the drum track for some possible ghost note addirions...     The solo section was fun.

Manuel - thank you!   Yeah, that little descending line was one of the things that kept me going with the song.  Glad to hear the layers are coming through OK!

Dan - thanks!   The guitar and bass lines were a @$%@ to get together timing-wise, so I appreciate the comment.

Bob -  thanks, I appreciate it!   Glad to know the influences and mix are coming through.

Pete - thanks, loves me some prog.      I don't listen to much newer stuff though, I'll have to do that...

Great track Steve, I'd love to try my hand at something tricksy like this  On the basis of this I think you'd enjoy Big Big Train (if you haven't heard them already).

Holy crap that was fun! I think you are making it up as you go along!
The chops are excellent, and the prog journey through the different sections is a never-get-bored treat.
Particularly after three minutes when the layers add in, great work man!

Mix-wise, I could only comment that the snare seemed a little muffled, but with so much going on, you might not want anything else added to the spotlight!

    thanks, great tune!

James - thanks!  Yeah, I do have fun doing this type of music, and having grown up on 70s prog it's just in my DNA. But I will most certainly look up Big Big Train (never heard of them!) 'cause new good stuff is well, good.

Tom - why, thank you!   It was fun to do, and don't tell anyone but yeah, some of it was made up as I went along.  Controlled improvisation.      The end section was my Kansas influenced mini-piece and was fun! For the snare, I probably tweaked the level + tone about twenty times and in the end decided to keep it in check. Good spot!

Man that was a cool composition.... Yeah I got that Earlier Genesis Vibe early on  which gravitated towards a Strawbs/Kansas mashup. Sweet guitar playing with all the harmonics reminiscent of Steve Howe. Awesome performance / mix and master. I'll be checking this one out again for sure. So where is Parksburg? I used to live near Allentown.

What a cool song and arrangement! Love the bass big time! Clear, fast and nice parts.
Drums are a bit dry and cymbals and toms could come up.
    All sounds really good.

Thanks, Daryl!  I'm glad you liked it.  Sure, I can gather the lyrics and post, though it's likely they won't be entirely clear or "normal"...  I suppose another thing in common with 70's prog.

Thank you, Scott.   I hadn't really thought Rush up to this point, but I like it!   And Kansas, of course, is an old favorite and the main inspiration for the end section.

Thanks, James, I appreciate it!  Combining Genesis, Strawbs, Kansas and Howe in one sentence?  Wow.    FWIW, Parkesburg is a bit east of Lancaster, out with the Amish.

Thanks, Jimmy!  I'm glad to hear the bass is coming through so clear...   The "main" bass line between verses and at the end section is actually where the song began, its genesis if you will.       There is some reverb on the mains and additional effect on the snare, but I'll have to revisit that to see what a little more sounds like.

Who plays the bass?  That is nice.  The acoustic instrument at the beginning are nice.  I really like when the electric slips in at !:00, and then the pause at 1:25.

The lead at 2:30 is so cool.  I wish I could play guitar like that, and then that bass come in prominently at 3:00, and the song frolics to a conclusion.

I sure wish I knew how to do something like that.

    Good musicianship all around.

    Steve,
Wow, great tune!  This feels very Yes like but with your own unique style stamped on it.  The guitar has a very Steve Howesque sound.  Cool tune and the mix is pristine on my system.  Nice guitar playin!  Great stuff.

The mix, arrangement and execution are top notch.  There are places where the drums drag it a bit -- around the 2:00 mark -- when the lead guitar comes in -- and in some other places. That's some cookin' bass and good guitar playing.  I enjoyed listening to this piece :)
(I liked the *sitar* part in 'Castles of Sand' and the well done guitar work.)

Re: New rock/prog song - Too Near To See 2015/12/29 16:12:20 (permalink)
Russ - thanks!  My "normal style of prog" huh...  well, I will certainly take that as a compliment!

Jesse - thank you!   The bass is just me, played on a cheap Sam Ash special I bought years ago livened up with a CA-X FX Chain.  The intro is four tracks of mic'd acoustic guitar in four different ranges/positions.  The leads were probably my favorite part to play though.

Reece - thanks!  Always appreciate a Howe reference!  The intro was my poor man's attempt at creating a bit of that acoustic/vachalia thing he used to do.      And the electric parts, yeah, they're mostly clean-ish which I guess was also a sub-conscious nod in that direction.

Tom - thanks!   Now I'm going to have to look up The Samples.

Furry one - thanks!   Glad you liked it!

Tony - thank you!    Once again I appreciate the Howe/Yes references (my favorites growing up) and am glad you liked the mix too.

Antti - thanks!   Yes, this was definitely meant to be a major key "happy" song even with the prog-ish bits so I'm glad that comes across.

Allan - thanks!  I'm happy to know things are working.   I'll have to go back and listen for those drum hits, though it's possible the "drummer" was just laying back a bit.  Yeah, that's the ticket.        I'm not sure what "Castles of Sand" is though?         (PS... love the avatar).

Almost forgot...   second mix is up, with some minor drum tweaks and a bit more reverb as per comments above.  Oh, and I've posted the lyrics in the OP as requested by Daryl.   Just don't ask for the hidden meaning.

Holy Moly, I tought it sounded a hint of celtic at the start then it started get punk like. Im  huge fan of the off time beats and fills. This piece has some fantastic musiciality and theory in it. And like another member said, it seems like a music that came like like you might talk, straight out of your head with a flow.

I dont think I remembered one word if thats a problem or not!

    Im impressed

Superb song, Steve.  I've been a prog-rock fan for many years.  The mix I heard seems complete to me.  The vocals are great and really make this song stand out from the crowd.  You are definitely in the top tier of songwriters.

    All the best,
    Lynn

Cian - thanks!  Some of it definitely falls into "make it up as a I go along" territory, including some of the syncopated stuff.  I go with whatever seems to work.   And no worries about the words - I certainly don't consider myself a lyricist!

James - thanks for checking in again!  I appreciate it.  I'm going to have to catch up on some Strawbs.

Lynn - thanks!   I would not consider vocals my strong suit at all, so I appreciate the comment.   As far as songwriting goes...  Nah, I'm just happy to be in the company of the talent on this forum, yourself included!

    Steve,

Quite an ambitious undertaking, sounds really good.  Guitars, bass, vocals, et. al...  very cool progressive song and well executed.   It is really difficult to get drums to sound real in this type of music, i.e.  MIDI drums can sound quite mechanical, particularly with a busy progressive style.   For the most part, the drums sound pretty realistic but there are a few spots in the verses (around :42 for example)-where the drums get a bit stiff.   Maybe you could adjust the swing on a few of those clips to loosen things up a bit.   The instrumentation is very good, and very interesting throughout.
