New song - Follow The River (remixed 9/21)
This song was inspired by a recent purchase, the Waves Morphoder for $29. I'd never had a good vocorder before, and I've always admired the way Pink Floyd used one on "A New Machine pt.1 &2" from A Momentary Lapse Of Reason, so I came up with this about 4 weeks ago. It explains how my life is kind of like a river, always following the path of least resistance. As always, I welcome your comments, yea or nay, and thank you all for your help, past and present. It can be found here: http://www.soundclick.com...&q=hi&newref=1

Hey, Lynn, Wow, this is a really unique and very cool song with a variety of tasty elements blended into a nice tight sounding production! I love the moody vibe, the piano, and synth on this one are excellent, and your guitar and vocals are always top notch. The mix sounds full and wide with lots of punch. You've always got a great, very recognizable signature sound. Great stuff, Lynn, really well done as always! Bob

Tim, thanks for your comments and kind words. You've been doing pretty good, yourself, lately. Andy, much appreciated. Are you listening on headphones? I thought of you when I was monitoring on my cans. I even got out my ear buds for this (and a few other buds, as well ;) Bob, you dog! You sure have a way with words!

OK, I agree great vocals! But aren't you kind of burying them, or making them compete, with synth pads, and a saxomophone? They can stand a bit of space to shine - just a thought. Maybe the synth pads in the "just like a river" chorus could be panned to the edges, or panned a little more away from the vocal? That's a pretty sweet harmonica there! And I liked your backing vocals, very strong. cheers, -Tom

Excellent song Lynn, very catchy tune that kept playing in my head. I listened on my H-phones and do agree with Tom with panning the synths to bring out your strong vocals......of course, all this is somewhat subjective. As it is, the mix/production and performance darn good....very good stuff!!!! :)

This is very nice Lynn, though I agree with Tom the vox could be a little more out front. Thanks for sharing

really neat song, lynn... i think you need to add some clarity to the vocals, they are just not quite present enough to come across. i could just be level.... or it could be eq, like 6k and up..... listen to it real loud... then real soft..... then make the changes, it'll be somewhere inbetween those two listening environments. to me, this is like a cool cross between leon russell, and the floyd.

Lynn, Cool song and superbly performed. I agree with the previous mix suggestions. Would also bring up the drums a bit.

Great stuff Lynn - really creative. I think the main vocal could come up slightly/drop the fx mix slightly in the "Follow the river' sections. Small crit though - really good stuff.

@Tom, Mesh, Wookie, Bat, Grant, Mark, and Daryl, thanks a million for your helpful replies. I have taken your suggestions and made the changes. I boosted the vocals a bit, and turned up the synth pads on the edges of the stereo. As the lead vocal in the choruses is run through the vocorder, which is a synth in its own right, I can't separate the synth from the voice, but I did lower the volume of the carrier (synth). I hope this works, but I can easily change it.

Really cool song, Lynn. It's got a bit of a dark and swampy vibe happening without actually being swampy, if that makes sense. And the chorus is catchy! Just solid work all around with this one from writing to arrangement to performance to mix. Oh, and love the gong at about 2:30.

Hey Lynn! Very cool, but as others have said, the vocoder steps all over your vocal. I'd suggest running the vocoder through channel tools and widening them so they are no longer sitting in the middle. Maybe a gentle flange on them as well. Move the sax further right with a reverb echo on the left. Just my $.02 ;) Regards, Dan

my comment is "yay". I love a loud track and this def a loud track. The only "distortion" (i.e. bad) is in that opening morphed vocal line. Later it's better. Tasty guitar work Lynn. Maybe add just a tad distortion? That would give it that Gilmour feel.

This is an awesome song Lynn. One of best I've heard on this forum at the moment. I'd have to agree and say that your vocals could be more up front and present, as they are the hero, and you sing them so well. I am listening on headphones and am finding the panning to be a bit too much on some instruments, would probably be ok on the monitors though. Nice work.

Steve, thanks for the kind words. There are a lot of swamps near some major rivers. Dan, I like your ideas and will give them a spin on the next pass. Thanks for contributing. Ed, thanks for your reply. I like the idea about adding a little distortion to the guitar so will give it a try. Wayne, thanks for your kind words and ideas. I'll work on the vocal. The separation from the panning does indeed work better on speakers. I'll look for a compromise. Thanks again to all, and stayed tuned for more to come.

OK, I've taken all your ideas and this is what I came up with. I cleaned up the vocorder and added a very subtle flanger that follows it. I added a touch of delay to the sax part during the guitar solo and panned it left. I'm just getting to know the vocorder, and it's fun to play with and easy to overdo. Again, I can't thank you all enough. http://www.soundclick.com...&q=hi&newref=1

Yeah, think the new mix does sit a little better, particularly the mids of the effected vocals. Oh, did I mention this is a really cool song? After hearing it again I think it's one of your best, hands down.
