New song - Let You Go - (updated 8/18/14)
Hello to all my forum friends. I've been vacationing until recently which is why I haven't been around. I was inspired to write this new song about two weeks ago, and now it's ready for your perusal. I've changed my production methods drastically since my last song, and this is the result. As usual, I wrote and recorded everything, and I eagerly await your thoughts. All I've learned from this forum has been applied to this production. I want to thank all of you in advance for your time and effort regarding this and all past productions. I couldn't have done it without your help. 8/18/14- Here is the result of my remix per your suggestions. I added more "beef" to the low end and balanced the left and right channels. Hope this works. http://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?q=hi&songID=12854232

I don't know what the deal is with Soundclick but I had to find your page, before I noticed the link in your sig, and click the download button to get it to play. I love the groove. I especially like the way the left and right are playing off of each other and that cool bass line. Maybe the snare could come up just db? The bass drum seems to thud out to me. The toms have more oomph than the bass drum but the toms sound fine. This is subjective but I like the drums from the listeners perspective rather than the drummers. The section at 2:06 - 2:35 is really cpp;! Nice change. Excellent tunage!

Lynn, Really good song and arrangement. I can't decide whether I like the vocal processing or not, at first I didn't like it but by the end it was growing on me a little;) I would be curious how it sounds clean, i.e. without the modulation or whatever is on the track. The music is really engaging, very cool. Regards

Man, I really like this one. Actually, I like what you have done on the vocals on this number. The FX gives the vocals just a hint of Z Z Top. Your wide separation really highlights the great interplay between the left and right panning ---- cool! You have done a great job on the arrangement --- very different and very cool! Excellent song Lynn!!!

Thank you all for your kind remarks. Robert, I'll take your observations about the drums into account when I revisit this. This was the first song I ever did with AD2, so I'll take some time with this to get it right. Mark, thanks for listening. The vocal processing in this comes from Izotope Nectar, and it reminds me of a Pink Floyd song that I like. I made sure that the dry vocal was sounding good to my ears before applying the f/x. Freddy, thank you for your kind words. I hadn't thought of ZZ Top, but now that you mention it, I know what you mean. This f/x was new for me, and I just wanted to give it a try.

Ditto on the drums. Fatten the snare and kick and bring them up a bit. You might want to add some modulation to the left synth that plays off the guitar so that its resonance varies a bit over time. It will add some motion to it. Awesome work my friend! Regards, Dan

Reminds me of early Genesis. Like what you did with the panning. Good big space in the middle for the vox. I'm trying do more of that. Like transition alot. Awe sweet at 2:30...like that alot. Guitar on right sounds alot like the guitar on "When Doves Cry"...like it. I'd like a slightly fatter bass and kick. Nice job.

Guys, thanks for you helpful comments. Tim, I hope it sounds good on your monitors. I appreciate your time. Chas, you've inspired me to consider making a video for this. Thanks for your input. Dan and Don, thank you both for your awesome comments. It seems there's a growing consensus about the drums. I can't wait to play with them again. All these comments help me a great deal and encourage me. Much grass!

I really like this one Lynn, as noted above it's different but really cool. I like the vocal processing, fits the song well IMHO. Great arrangement, good job on spacing everything. What is that effect on the right channel guitar? Really cool. Great job!

Hi guys, thanks for the kind words and time. Bob, the guitar is played through TH2 and the main f/x is the Octaver with a little grit. I love that sound, and I first heard it done by Jimi Hendrix. John, I keep my levels low in Sonar (about -12 to 18), bounce to Sound Forge, where I put a limiter on it set to -8.0 threshold and -0.1 margin for 16/44.1 wave files. For MP3 conversion, I set the limiter to 0 threshold and -0.35 margin @256K. Thanks for asking.

I think you may have created a genre!! I can't say I've ever heard anything like it (that's meant as a compliment btw). I like the treatment on the vocals, it made me focus on them and the lyrics. Very good job.

Nice to see you back song sounds basically good. For me though the bass and the kick sound like they are lacking any body/weight and it is all a bit harsh and jangly. This is just my furry ear pers-p-e-ctive. Thanks for sharing.

Wookie, I'm very interested in the comments you made about the recording being a bit harsh and jangly. That's something I want to avoid, so I will take care to deal with those issues on the next pass. Thanks for your comments and time! Kenny, I'm so encouraged by your remarks and observations. You're one of the best around, so it gives me hope for the future. Thanks for taking the time.

Cool song there, Lynn! Different for sure. I like the interplay between the left and right sides, and the vocals do remind me a little of ZZ too both in tone and processing. Works well IMHO. Oh... and I love the short "pop-corn" solo.

Cool tune. Excellent production and playing. I like the vocal effect also. I think the tune needs a little low end boost to help fatten the kick and bass and help calm some of the high mids, in other words it needs more bottom,to me. Great job on the tune.

Monty, thank you for your observations. You are not alone in your assessment. I will address these concerns when I return to this mix. Last weekend, Kansas City got a lot of rain, and my basement, where my studio resides, got flooded. Fortunately, only my carpet got soaked, but I had to hire a water restoration company to clean and dry out my studio. Tomorrow the fans and dehumidifier will go, and I can put my studio back together and get to work on this project. Thanks for you valuable time.

Lynne, Are you using that full version of Nectar on this song, or Elements version? Very cool vocal fx. It does have a little of that "Little Ol' Band's" sound on vocals. Needs just a little low end boost, as mentioned.....but great song. I mucho like this one!

Hi, Michael, thanks for listening and good to hear from you. I have two versions of Nectar, one that came with Sound Forge 11, and another that came with something else. I'm sure they're both the light versions, but I'm using one that is 64 bit and a VST3. Probably the SF version? Robbie, thank you for your time and kind words. Best of luck with your new song which I think is a hit. Pluto, thanks for your time and comments. I enjoyed hearing the tunes you have posted here. Wookie, you pointed me in the right direction, as you have done in the past, so, take credit where credit is due. Thanks for being my ears.
