New song.. Please let me know how the mix is.
Hello everybody, I worked a long time on this one around 6 weeks. 32 tracks total and I have a headache. Suggestions on the mix are very welcome. It's called Six Pack to a Shoe.. Thanks! Tom. https://soundcloud.com/kampfirekowboys/six-pack-to-a-shoe

Tom, this is really good! I like the vibe and the production very much. It's W I D E. It seems like we're becoming a monophonic culture these days, and this is the way I like to hear music. Good job.

Nice song, Blues rock always fits the bill. I personally only started recording a week ago because all the people I've played for have asked me to do it. So far nothing has turned out as good as this. My question for you is, there is a sound of what I think is boots stomping; Is that supposed to be on an off beat? It felt like that section is for getting the crowd involved by stomping along and it just seemed off to me. Don't get me wrong, it still works right where it is. Keep up the good work!

Was this a live recording? Good song. Performances were really good. Didn't like that clicking noise in the intro and in the breakdown.

Thanks everybody. No, it wasn't recorded live so may be I should be more aware of the overall reverb. The walking sound at the beginning and breakdown is supposed to be walking into a casino as an effect. I listened to about 200 or so samples until I found the right .wav file. It's purposely on the upbeat to make it stand out. I could turn that down or try to eq it to something less irritating. This is not the final cut so I may want to re-record the guitars because where I'm at now I only have access to Guitar Rig. When I get back to Chicago I will re-record using a real amp & mic. Thanks for the input. Tom.

The footsteps are a little intrusive, the mix has a live feel. sounds like a big band playing.

Sounds great! Loved the groove, and it sorta comes off like a live horn band (in a casino?). Vocals are clear and up front, and the "band" is tight. I have to agree on the footsteps though... I think they just last a little too long, and the slight offset to their peak tends to throw the upbeat off a little. Either way this was a really cool song!

Yes I did not like the intro in first version it sounded like a crowd of people clapping 40 feet from the stage so out of time. If you could get that in sync with the tempo It might work But your new version, while cleaner is down in level a lot. You need to check your RMS levels after export. But being a huge blues guy myself this sounds almost like a live band. How did you do those drums? .. that is very live sounding. Great tune. The horns start out sounding real but near the end they sound a little more like a synth.

Thanks for the feedback Johnny. I will check the levels.. I'm going to move the foot steps to the downbeat to exactly match the 85 bpm and see how that sounds. The drums were done on EZDrummer in the Power Batter mode. I find that plug-in very easy to use and it has a lot of different type of beats that can be used. And, yes it's very easy to use. Also, I played a very progressive horn piece at the end that may be a bit weird so I'll look at that as well. Great feedback! Thanks! Tom.

Hi Tom, listening at a reasonable level through Tannoy Reveals, it sounds pretty darn good to me. The lead guitar fills are perhaps a little subdued, better in the solo. Vocals and BGVs are excellent. Good song, good hook!

This is a really interesting tune! I got a Steely Dan feel in some parts, but it's clearly a blues rock tune. I think the bass tone is a real standout, and it sits pretty tight with the drums. Not much to find fault with in your mix, but maybe guitar could be louder. You've made some interesting choices in the blends of the bgv's - kind of unconventional, my ear kinda had to get used to it, but I eventually did. Fun stuff! cheers, -Tom

I really like the strong blues-rock and live busy-bar-on-Friday-night atmosphere. The tight, accomplished vocal and just enough loose feel in the instruments, particularly the drums and the horns in the first half of the song, made for a great "you are there" feel. Thanks for putting up this song! LJ

Really good and strong mix, having listened to the different versions, I wonder if the walking bit really needs to be there at all, in my opinion the song itself was a better mix at the start. OK the walking bit was a little high but if it were reduced in level and perhaps panned from front centre to left ( or right ) a little, it might give a better effect of someone walking into a casino and may work better. Anyway it was worth the time and effort you put in thanks for posting.
