New song - TOO RICH FOR HEAVEN-remixed 1/31/18
Here is my latest opus, recorded with my old friend, Roger Fife, on bass. I eagerly look forward to hearing from all of you with your helpful comments on this production. Here is the link: https://www.soundclick.co...ngid=13676989&q=hi I don't know how much longer this forum will be here, but I sure have enjoyed it over the years and have learned much from being here. I hope all of us has a productive 2018! EDIT (1/31/18): Taking your suggestions, I remixed this today and lessened the compression to give the mix more breathing room and make it less fatiguing. Thanks for all who participated. Here are my tongue in cheek lyrics: Some people know how to drive you insane They say it’s sunny when it’s starting to rain The sky is falling, and they tell you it’s good You’re talking clearly, but you’re misunderstood You don’t know the time You don’t know the place Your sins may be forgotten But, you never forget a face CHORUS You can be too rich for heaven But you’re never too poor for hell You can be too rich for heaven But, you’re never too poor for hell You may be thinking that you know how to smile Maybe you think you went the extra mile Look in the mirror, and tell me I’m wrong We always end up just where we belong CHORUS I believe there’s a place in the future I believe there’s a place in the past I believe there’s a place in the present I believe that it’s over too fast Just take a place in the back of the line And, when it’s over I know you’ll be fine And, if your worries should happen to pass I hope you’ll be at the head of the class CHORUS (2x’s)

Love this topic. Great song, dig the retro organ sound at the beginning. All the instruments sound great.

I like the song Lynn, and the overall recording is well done. The only nit I have is that that slap echo on the vocal is adding some pumping that is pushing the instruments in spots, particularly during the louder vocal passages. Not sure what your FX chain is, but my guess is the limiter is pumping from the echo... Regards, Dan

Lynn I like it. The vocal track is very good as always - you have a great voice. I'm particularly impressed with the professional production that went into the song.

I like it Lynn! Clever lyrics and excellent singing and playing. I'd like to hear more definition in the drums personally, with a bit less compression and reverb. Also, the synth/organ bell pads are a bit heavily compressed for me, making the overall mix seem a bit "splashy". I like the instrumentation, and the left side guitar picking work. Good one!

Well seeing as when I was but a ankle snapping Wookiee I overheard someone saying "Those <our surname>'s will never be true <insert followers of a certain religious figure who reportedly came from the middle east and was born some 2018+ years ago.> because they are working class". (little did they know I would help save a galaxy one day ) I figure I have always been destined to go to the opposite of the place discussed above. Sounds well here Lynn. <Trying to comply with COC>

Sorry for the late reply, but I want to thank all of you for your responses. I've heard a couple of times that the delay on my vocal was questionable, so I will take that into consideration. Also, I've been told that my limiter and compressor may be overdone, so that will be accounted for. These are exactly the things I was hoping to hear, and I will be busy reworking this mix. I think it's close, but no cigar, yet. I want this song to breathe so I can take it off the respirator.

Lynn, Very cool song, super catchy. You have some good mix suggestions already so will just say I really like the song. Reminds me vaguely of the Talking Heads but a very unique song. Very clever...

OK, this is weird, not the song, I just finished litening to Nettlesmith Satan's Kitchen, and then this. I like the way you always stretch yourself, you push yourself. The cymbal work is very nice. Then lyrics truthful, and the arrangement very enlightening. I need to listen to this again. JQS

Mark, thanks for your response. I'm starting to like the song, myself. To be compared to TH is quite a compliment. Jesse, I appreciate you taking the time to listen twice! The mix has thus far eluded me, but I'm encouraged by the suggestions I've received here. David, I like the second response. Dean, thanks for your time and reply. I will be tackling this mix again, hopefully, this weekend. Stay tuned.

Thanks to all who have given me suggestions for improving this mix. I remixed it today and lowered the compression to give it more breathing room and make it less fatiguing. Hopefully, I covered all the ideas you've made, but if I missed any, please let me know. The link is in the OP and here: https://www.soundclick.co...ngid=13676989&q=hi

I like the groove on this song. Somewhere in the middle I was getting hints of the Police.

This is a good one, Lynn. Great lyrics. The drum instrumentation reminds me of DEVO. You always seem to come up with something interesting sound wise.

John, thank you for your time and kind words. I had to listen to DEVO to hear what you hear, but I now know where you're coming from. I thought those drums sounded a little retro, now I know why.

Someone above above commented "gutsy" and I agree. It's a killer pop song, with catchy chorus and plucky little guitar riffing in the left speaker. I too also pictured this as in the middle 80's somewhere. I'd add "gritty" and as you have a little crunch on the vocals, you seem to be matching it with some hair on the snare. Soundtoys Decapitator on both perhaps? What is adding the grit? For me, you might lower the grit on either the vocal, or the snare. They compete and make a grit fest in the upper mids. Am I all wet here? If you listen to around 2:17, the snare drops out completely in a breakdown section. Here, your effected vocal really pops out and there's more clarity. But you need a snare of course. It sounds like youve got the snare panned a little right, and the main vocal a little left. The vocal echo comes in on the right? Where is the snare panned in relation to the vocal echo? MAybe they are crowding each other. Vocal performance is killer and the parts are all there and played well. The drums overall have a very crunched, compressed sound and I'd be curious if a more modern breathable drum sound might do this a treat. What did you use for the drums? Top notch lyrics and songwriting. cheers, -Tom

Tom, your reply is very thought provoking, and greatly appreciated. The grit that you hear on my vocal is just me with a little CA-2A. The drums are AD2, and they are lightly compressed at the bus stage with the 1176 included in Splat. At the break, there is no snare drum because it's replaced by the toms in that section for variety's sake. I'm going for a punchy sound in this piece, so that's why it sounds as it does. I can, however, hear the drums produced like you mentioned. Well, the fat lady hasn't sung yet, so who knows what tomorrow brings? Thanks again for all your help over the last few years.

That was different... 60's-electro-pop-rock perhaps? I kinda liked the delay on the vocals, it gave them a different feel. Love how things are panned too. About the only nit I would have is that the kick in the beginning has a lot of "click". Once the vocals come in it's more masked so doesn't stand out.

Wow, you resurrected this from the graveyard. Thanks for taking the time to respond! I agree with you on the clickiness of the kick drum. I'll fix that in the next version. I wanted it to cut through, but I went a little too far.
