New song - "The Gates Of Hell"

This is an angry song I wrote with a friend about the killing of teacher Philip Lawrence in the UK in 1995. He was stabbed outside his school trying to protect one of his pupils. Thanks for listening:
"The Gates Of Hell".

Many thanks, David. It took me many, many attempts to get that bottom end sounding anything near right! I really struggle EQ'ing bass. Thanks for listening.

John, as someone who vividly remembers the events your song portrays I find the song incredibly evocative and moving.

Your thoughtful and [maybe] metaphorical lyrics ["..but he wouldn't be saved by the bell.."] superbly match the [flawless] accompaniment and speak to me in a slightly more generalised way about our society in general.

If you'd recorded these wonderful lyrics over an out of tune Stylophone you'd still have a valid and powerful song John.

Nice clarity in the mix, presence is very well developed, vocals have that 'right in the same room with me' feel to them. Nice use of wah, very cool and effective sax/guitar break. Nice artistic style in this, very 10cc (which I mean as a big complement ). Drums felt a little mechanical in a few parts (hi hat gallop) but otherwise settled and gelled very well. Nice work, artistic with a kind of openness about it, nicely done.

    John,

Great job. I really like the lyrics and the sax was just incredible. I'm listening on iMax speakers, so I can't comment on the mix other than it was very clear with excellent separation of instruments. Very well arranged.

Powerful... I like it. I actually get a Duran Duran vibe? And that's an acoustic tennor sax, nice work with it.

Many thanks everyone, I appreciate the kind comments!
Sonar is a wonderful set of tools, so wonderful that I can get lost in its enormous box, trying to carve out the end product I have in my head by trial and error! I guess that's the difference with a pro engineer (who after all has made a career out of this) who would go straight to the correct tool and apply it just so. Ah well, most of the fun is in the quest!
PS: I'm a guitarist and must own up that the fantastic sax was from a superb new loops collection called 'Suite Grooves', and it was just incredible how one or two of the loops fitted my chord progression with no mangling necessary!

    John,

Trial and error can be frustrating. This forum has been a great source for me, so ask questions and search the "techniques" area. Also, there are a couple of good books that are a must, "Sonar Power", by Scott Garrigus is great for Sonar tips. I've read the "Mixing Engineer's Handbook", but I found it to be more anecdotal than useful. I'm reading "Mixing Audio" by Roey Izhaki now and it's much better at describing what we are trying to do, make great mixes of our musical ideas.

As for the sax, I've got to check out "Suite Grooves" now. I've been using Garritan Jazz and Big Band, which is great for orchestra, but I'm not good enough yet to write the solos. You did an excellent job with it. It was seamless.

    Thanks for the tip,

    Scott
