New song for a school project. ( CALEB'S song)

Some back ground  on this tune.

Caleb Shumate is a high school senior who I know from church. He is also a huge country music fan and a fan of oldies rock. Caleb is learning how to play guitar as well. As part of his high school graduation requirement, he has to complete a senior project where he has to select a topic and find a mentor to spend about 12 hours mentoring on that topic. Caleb chose the guitar as a topic, and asked me to be his mentor, and that has kinda also morphed into music in general.

Early on in the mentoring,he told me he had written a song. I suggested that we record that song and include the entire studio/music experience in his final presentation to the class. Yeah, he actually has to talk about this and he gets a grade for the entire project.

So, for the past week or so, we have been working on the song. I told him, that I would offer some assistance but it was his job to write it. I suggested a few minor tweaks to structure and a few words. I put it together in BB and sent him the track for approval.

Today (4-16-11) he and his father came over. Since my studio is upstairs, his father assisted in getting him up here. He has CP and relies on a chair and assistance in navigating stairs.  Once here, we got to work.... he sang all the vocals and I simple ran the DAW.

We had a good time recording this tune. I call it The Last Time, he calls it As I Walk Out The Door...either way, it's Caleb's Song.

It is country swing. Set back and enjoy Caleb's first written and recorded song.

Caleb's Song

Since it is a school project, we took some pics for his presentation.

This is Caleb singing the tune in the Upper Room studio.

Finished with lunch...we sent his dad to the McDonalds...... here, we're listening to a playback.

All in all the session was a blast, and I think Caleb will get a passing grade on this presentation.  The first time Caleb played this tune for me, to say he was shy and reserved  would be an understatement. When he got to the studio, I encouraged him to sing it out...let it go, and see what happens..... I think he projected the song well. Quite a difference from that first time I heard him sing it.

We explored some of the aspects of digital recording.... punch in among them. I think I can guess what will be on Caleb's wish list now.

Have a listen to this song, and chime in on comments to Caleb. I'll be sending him the link to this thread so he can read your commentary.

Thanks for listening. Hope you enjoy it.

This is great, Herb!  What a fun way to spend the day.   :)

Caleb, this is great!  Your first song?  I'm impressed.  Great country song and you did a great job with it.  Maybe you've found a new hobby?  I'm guessing your classmates will be impressed.  Well, maybe not as much as mine would have been 30 years ago, but still.  :)  Great job!

Reece, Caleb had a blast and so did I.

His tune is #9 in sub-genre on Sound click today.... I know he's pretty excited about that too. It means someone is listening to it.

This really is a special session to remember.  The end product speaks for itself. Very nice. He has a very distinct vocal style that works really well on this song.

Scotty & Tap, yeah this was a day we both were looking forward to. It was the first time I had anyone else in my studio to actually record.

MGH... Interesting observation about his voice. I heard some interesting qualities in it. Kinda like a slight  Waites thing going on there. Yeah, you guessed it.... in the name of expediency and a lack of time, BB was used. Aside from the time I spent putting it together in BB prior to the session...... When he arrived, it was at that time that I created a NEW project in MC4 and began the process of building the song from scratch. I wanted him to see the entire process, which he was able to see how it was all done.

The entire session was 3.5 hours from start to finish.

Good job Herb, not that I know anything about country swing but it sounds like you had a good starting point with the song from Caleb.

You ought to keep working with that boy and sign him.  With a little bit of vocal training he could really be good.  He has a really nice quality to his voice.  The song is really nice and you did a great job, Herb.  This is one of those things that will always be remembered by you, him and many others.  A truly great project!

Thank you very much Dave, just a little bit of background I am very heavily influenced by 50's and 60's Rock "N" Roll and Classic Country, it's all I listen to. People like Elvis, Johnny Rivers, The Beatles,  The Bee Gees Waylon Jennings, Buck Owens, George Strait, ect. so Idk if that has anything to do with it but that's what I love.

you can go to the original post #1.... click on the song link. it takes you to the sound click site for the song. scroll down and today's soundclick chart position is on the page.

copy the page address and post in in FB and ask your friends to go and have a listen. the more people that listen in a given period of time the higher it goes in the charts.

The only downside is, while the charts are a cool ego bump, there is no paycheck that accompanies it.

And in spite of the fact that Bapu claims post count doesn't matter, we all know that it does. (don't ask... if you hang out here, you'll find out about that soon enough)
