New song from Beagle Sound! "When I Pray" new mix version 1/6/12
Hi all! It's been a very long time since I posted a song and even longer since I posted an original. This song itself was conceived about 2 years ago and almost 2 years ago I asked several forum members to help out on this one with spoken word of the Lord's Prayer in different languages. Credits are all listed below. The intro is quite long, please bear with it because it will make sense when you get through it. New mix version 1/3/12 NEW MIX 1/6/12! I brought the bass down just a little more and fixed a few vocal places. http://soundcloud.com/beaglesound/when-i-pray As always, comments are always welcome! thanks for your support! Hi Beagle! :-) Very classic sounding song. Love the mood! Very 'Zager and Evans' in some ways. The separation of the backing BG's is great! Organ's at a good level! Nice switch to the major at the end! Nice nice nice! Bring up or envelope support your lead vox a bit. Louder is better - be confident! Kick is almost nonexistent - you gotta bring up all the drums : Snare x 15% Kick x 35% Toms x 23% Hats x 15% Crashes/Rides - 25%. Bass is a hair boomy. Nice tone, but boomy - reduce volume and frequency adjust with slope down in the 20-80Hz range. Boost the 210-250 (Q of about 3.5 or so) and a notch at the 800hz level and 1 through to the 2khz range a notch on that area somewhere too. Dip the mud from all the areas in between the boosts mentioned, and you'll have it sitting nice, I think. Great message! Very powerful song. I have to listen to more of your stuff. You have a great year buddy! Martin & Nancy

Very Cool, Reece. Bass seems too boomy to me. Drums could be crisper. I'd raise the Lead Vox 1 or 2 db.

I can't comment on the mix (notebook). I agree w/bap on the drums. I like the idea of the song. I may change up the chorus a little.

Neat song here, Reece. Great lyrics to this one! There seems, to my ears anyways, to be a bit of boom going on though and I would like to hear the lead vocals up a bit as well...

fantastic guys! I appreciate the listens and the comments! I've already made adjustments based on your comments. Martin - adjusted the drums based roughly on your estimates, especially the kick. changed the bass and cleaned it up a lot. Thanks a lot! I appreciate the comments! have a great year! baps - thanks so much for the listen and comments! I brought the lead vox up about 1.5dB and adjusted all of the drums. hope it's better now. thanks so much! robby - thanks for the listen and comments! already uploaded a new version with adjusted drums, thanks for that. and I understand your suggestion about the chorus, but I'm not likely to change it at this point, "it is what it is." thanks very much for the suggestion, tho. I do appreciate it!

I heard the first version. Then I got a phone call before I could post. I went back and listened to the updated version. The first version was good, but I like the changes, too. It sounds more polished now.

I missed the first version. Bass is sitting nicely. Strong presence, but not boomy at all. Cool concept. I like the way it all comes together. I really like the confidence in your delivery, Reece. This is miles above what you have done in the past. Way to go!!!

Cool. I like it.... I will listen later on headphones since on these computer speakers the bass was still booming a bit and the drums were not crisp as has been mentioned.

Great concept. The song is very nice and the bass sounds fine on my 2:1 PC speaks. The drums do lack luster as mentioned. The bass level could go down just a little and the drums can come up a little IMO.

Way to go!!! Thanks so much Bob! I know you've heard some real stinkers from me in the studio, too, so that's really a great compliment! The bass was boomy in the first version, the 2nd version that you heard was not as boomy, but maybe a little too hot, so this new version I'm about to upload has dropped it down a smidge (not much). thanks again my friend! trimph1 Oh definitely sounds way more polished!! I appreciate it more than you know to hear those kinds of comments!!! check out the latest version if you're not tired of hearing it! I've cleaned up the drums more and boosted them and dropped the bass a little.

Vocals sound good, the first 2 verses it seemed like the vocals could come up just a touch though. I thought the vocals in the chorus's sounded like they were at the right level. Good tune brother! I saw you listed over at CSN, but have n't posted there yet.

Hey Beagle. Speakers, rooms, amps, everyone gets a little different sound. With my listening setup the bass is still too boomy and I think the kick drum still needs to come up some more. Also, on the final chorus/outro I thought your voice was a bit bright. Have you considered automating some pans of the voices to make them move around in the sound field? I've heard that effect applied nicely with this type of sound to allow the individual parts to be discernable without muddying each other up. Glen

I have posted a couple of covers in this time, but not originals. I normally do 2 "types" of song, Contemporary Christian like this, and "Worship songs" which I have several "in the pot" right now and will be finishing those up in the next few weeks/months. they're a little different than this one, obviously. I did increase the lead vox a little more here. thanks again for the listen and comments! gcolbert Hey Beagle. Speakers, rooms, amps, everyone gets a little different sound. Glen yeah, it's diffictul to get a good mix that translates on all platforms! I have increased the kick some more, so check it out now, just uploaded a new mix again. but the kick now is thumping pretty hard on my system, so I hope this will satisfy everyone at this point. I did not consider moving the pans of the vocals, I've done that on another song before, but not this one. thanks for the suggestion.

Cool idea and song, Reece. The last minute when there is the answer/call with the bg singers is terrific. They should come up more. Your voice is just way too loud on the choruses. And it is cutting me somewhere in the 2.2k range. Really needs to be tamped down. +1 on the kick and snare. It could be a cool effect to have them distant like that in the background, but are way too wide presently to pull it off.
