New studio...

Greetings all. I would like some direction from my fellow Cakewalk users....

My wife and I are in the early stages of building a new home. We have picked out our builder and floor plan. Fortunately for me, I get one of the spare bedrooms for my "studio" space. SO this is exciting for me. I can have "power" over the construction of the studio (so to speak).

My music is usually just me. I play guitar, bass, some keys (drums done with midi or loops)... and I might sing eventually... so room for drums and other musicians isn't really a major concern. Most of my recording will be direct into Sonar (i..e Guitar Rig 4, Amplitube, etc).

My question is I am wanting to get information on DO's and DON'T in building a studio. I know I want "isolated ground" for the room, and I know there's something about lighting, etc. Is there a book or an online resource I can find to give me the information I need. I know "ideally" you want the walls a certain distance or at certain angles, etc.. to minimize certain frequency nodes and build ups. I have the power. =)

I will check with the builder, but I'm sure they have a "sound proof" option that they use for "Media" or Home Theater rooms in their floor plans.. I suppose that will suffice for my needs (maybe extra for the closer to use as an "amp room").  And I will get sound treatments as needed to cover the room once it is built to cover "mixing."

I appreciate the feedback and guidance.

Thanks all

It depends upon how much money you want to spend.  A few simple things- make sure the electrical system is stargrounded at the box.  Pay the extra for an electrician to do it right.

It sounds like you can record and mix in the same room, so that saves.  Most closet isolation booths aren't that good.

So spend the money for the proper room job and isolation.  Resources - check some of your local studios to see if they have any recommendations for people to at least check with.

Online sources - do a search.  Here was someplace I found a link to the other day.

It's been a few years but when I added  my studio to my retail building space the number one rule was "Do not build a Box"  In other words the room should be as far from a cube as possible. So I had the trusses made with a 6" rise to the centre ( cost nothing extra)  so the ceiling was off angle from the floor. Then I built the partition walls on off angles. Not much, but enough to end up with rooms that were odd shaped. OK this will drive your trades people  bonkers but anything you can do to deviate from a square box is good thinking. You can compromise  by adding stuff later , but it's great to build it this way if you have the option.
I glued soft paneling to most walls and used wood T&G on some too. Stay away from drywall hard surfaces. I love wood in a live room.
The main room was only about 20x 12 but I recorded some very loud band in there and it was always under control.
At home now I have 3/4 inch foam underlay under the commercial grade carpeting. My door is 2" thick and has weather striping. My home studio is in a loft attic space so the ceiling is 10 ' high and 2 different angles 12/12 and a 6/ 12  with a lot of overstuffed furniture.  So I don't know how weird your house design is but if you can stay away from a cube,,, go for it.

Most of those web sites about building studios are full of great ideas, but most pretain to serious commercial applications. You beloved might draw the line at some of those concepts.

Thanks for the info guys..  defintely have some great sites to goto and further my knowledge!!

Cactus, thanks for the "cube" info. I had somehow thought a square or box setup was "not ideal" so that confirms it. The floor plan bedroom I'm looking at is roughly square.. so it's time to get creative. =)

I'll give a shout here as things progress! =)

To add to Cactus's response: it might be pretty inexpensive ( depending on the layout of the floor space above to add a trade ceiling or cathedral ceiling. This can help with standing waves between floor and ceiling and give you a nice neat way to add absorption to the ceiling without compromising the height. Layout the room so that doors and closets don't compromise the longest dimension of the room for monitoring. You may be able to layout closets or abutments in the room on angles. Be very careful if you break up the length dimension  non symmetrically.  You can create half and quarter wave cancellation that will really screw up the low end response.

Also, maybe build in an insulated "hush box" for your computer.  Another frustating source of dBs in my space...

Love it. This translates to "my wife gave me permission to use one of the bedrooms for my studio space."
