New system, higher specs, still X2a stutters
So the title pretty much sums it up. I built a new computer around February (general specs are in my signature), which was an upgrade from an older laptop running XP, but still I get stutters and glitches during playback and recording in Sonar X2a. My guess is that it could be my relatively inexpensive interface, as that's what my sound is coming through during playback and recording. I even get these stutters with something as basic as a track for a mixtape where the instrumental is one single .wav file before even recording any audio. A few notes: - Project sampling rate is 44,100kHz
- Driver Mode: ASIO Dithering: Triangular
- 'Use multiprocessing engine' is ticked
- Render bit depth is 32bit
- I've kept task manager open during playback and my CPU usage is in the single digits, my RAM usage is generally under 25% (Often less) and Disk usage is in single digits
So far I've tried: - Disconnecting from the internet and closing all possible background applications.
- Increasing buffer in the ASIO panel to its maximum
- Going to Preferences>Audio>Sync and Caching>File System and increasing the the Playback I/O buffer size to as much as 1024 KB (currently set back down to 512KB)
- Tried ticking '64 bit double precision engine'
- Bipassing all FX
- Updated ASIO4ALL driver to newest version
Does anyone know of anything else I can try? Or if my playback issues are likely a result of the interface? Actually I'll also go and test through onboard sound (sound through my motherboard).

The interface does not have a factory ASIO driver? Using ASIO4ALL is not a good idea. You might try uninstalling ASIO4ALL and use whatever driver comes with the interface. SONAR does not require ASIO, it should work with whatever native driver the Alesis iO2 Express uses.

I agree. If you are forced to use ASIO4ALL, your interface is most likely the culprit. Have you visited Alexis site to look for most current drivers?

I am a bit confused about why Alessis suggests you use ASIO4all on a class compliant (presumably WDM) driver. The ability to use an ASIO settings box does not seem to justify the potential problems. The most likely cause of problems you are describing given that there is no indication that you are overloading your system capabilities is a DPC latency issue, a less likely cause would be driver conflicts by having two audio devices installed at once. Webcams, USB microphones, video cards with audio capabilities can all load audio drivers that can sometimes be a problem. The first thing to do would be look in device manager and disable any audio drivers that are not for your audio interface. If that fails to help get into your bios and disable any on board sound devices there. While you are at it disable any onboard wireless networking device at the BIOS level. After that it gets interesting. Download and learn to use latencymon. http://www.resplendence.com/latencymon

Yeah there's no factory drivers for this little interface (unlike my last one, a much larger Alesis Multimix). I just tried playing audio without the interface, through my motherboard's onboard audio: far less stutters though still some on occasion. To do this I had to switch the Driver Mode in preferences to 'MME (32bit)'. I then tried playback with the same driver mode using the interface, still less stutters than originally, but a bit more than playback without the interface.
I'll take a look at other audio drivers too. I haven't installed many peripherals, although I did have a video card and sound card (Creative) installed, they were both a bit older from another PC. I don't really game and my interface handles the audio for me, so I took both out. Tried to uninstall most of their software, but maybe I'll double check for anything lingering.

One more update, I uninstalled ASIO4ALL completely, now just using the MME (32bit) drivers. Played some other projects, I think it's about the same amount of stutter as I got with ASIO4ALL since even that didn't stutter all the time. Think I'll deal with this for now, the MME driver will actually share the audio drivers (while ASIO didn't) if I minimize Sonar so I can browse the web or play other multimedia, and it gives me higher volume for the direct sound of my mic coming through my headphones, so that makes things marginally easier for me. If anyone else has any ideas, they'd be much appreciated. I've been wanting to get another interface, thinking the one of Focusrite Saffires since I've heard good things about their preamps. Btw, here's another related question. With the Alesis IO2 Express, it has a fader knob to balance between USB sound (playback from DAW or the PC) and direct sound (actual mic or other line ins). This is really important for me because I use it to control how much of myself I hear when recording, as Sonar's 'Echo Input' has a lot of latency and throws me off. If I later get an interface like the Saffire that doesn't have this balance, what other options do I have for changing levels of playback VS input? And should the 'Echo Input' have latency or is that possibly due to my interface as well?

ASIO4ALL is not a true driver. It is a wrapper which presents the existing driver as an ASIO driver. It was written for software which only worked with ASIO.

Every interface I have used has a way to blend the direct monitor with DAW playback. Although with a low latency interface and a modern machine, I don't use direct monitoring as often as XP days.

I was looking at the Saffire Pro 14, didn't have a knob on it, but apparently it uses software for direct monitoring, so that won't be a problem. I'll research a bit about the Saffires' latency before I buy anything, but still If you're not doing direct monitoring, what in Sonar do you use to monitor your inputs and how do you balance them?

Most of the time, latency is low enough to monitor through the DAW. The audio interface still supplies the audio out for monitoring, the tracks being recorded have "echo on" enabled in SONAR.

I have a Saffire pro 40 and I never use zero latency monitoring any more via the mix control app they supply. The latency through Sonar is tiny and perfectly acceptable so I always monitor through Sonar. I love the Saffire range, drivers are great and stable. Cheers..

If you haven't already I would download DPC Latency checker run that and see if there are any obvious spikes. I used to use ASIO4ALL on my old Alesis Multimix because of poor ASIO factory drivers and that was a rock solid set up. Alesis did eventually release decent ASIO drivers for it, not long before I upgraded. It's also worth trying lower playback & recording I/O buffers in sync and caching. Buffers not filling quickly enough will also cause problems but that would usually manifest as dropouts rather than stutters. DPC latency is where I'd start though.

ASIO4ALL is best for people using laptops who don't have an external interface. Success with it is hit or miss, sometimes it does the job and sometimes not...MME is the last resort if nothing else works because it's slow and nasty. A good ASIO interface with quality drivers is crucial for a smooth experience.

Folks with laptops often have DPC latency spikes caused by their Wi-Fi adapters, and many folks temporarily disable or shut off their Wi-Fi adapters just prior to launching Sonar, then enable or turn back on the adapter after finishing the Sonar session. If you haven't tried that, well worth testing out. Lots of laptops have either a little switch somewhere that turns of Wi-Fi, or that is on a Function key. If neither, than you can quickly and safely go into Windows Device Manager and simply disable the Wi-Fi adapter, then launch Sonar. After finishing your Sonar session, go back into Windows Device Manager and Enable the adapter again, and all will be just fine. Do not do an Uninstall of the adapter - just Disable it. Bob Bone

Maybe I am confused about what you are saying, but I am pretty sure that the "class compliant" driver Alesis intends to load for your interface is not a 32 bit MME driver. If you are running a 64 bit Sonar on a 64 bit windows you need a 64 bit low latency driver. Since they suggest that you download ASIO4all if you need to use it with an ASIO compliant host, we can be pretty sure it is not ASIO either. What should load is a 64 bit WDM driver. If that is not what you are using you need to back up and figure out how to get that running. Sonar should be fine with a decent WDM driver. Your onboard sound chip probably is the source of the MME driver, that is typical on RealTek chipsets built into motherboards, hence my earlier advice to disable the onboard audio in BIOS at least during troubleshooting. If you are having trouble identifying the correct driver try the following: unplug your Alessis interface, and restart your computer log in to an account in the administrators group open device manager http://windows.microsoft....here-is-device-managergo to and expand by clicking sound video and game controllers make a list of what you see plug in your USB interface... a new device should appear write down the name the computer is using for your device. Right click on the device name and click properties to open its properties window. the general tab should say "this device is working properly"..if it shows an error code write it down http://pcsupport.about.co...anager_error_codes.htmA device can be working properly but still not be using the best driver. Click the driver tab click driver details and write down what you see for later reference if needed click "update driver" and then click to have Windows search the computer and the internet for more recent drivers. Manufacturer's of class compliant drivers sometimes put updates on the Windows update website which can be found this way. You will notice a disable button. Do not use the disable button on this device but do use it on all the other audio devices so that your only audio device is the Alessis during troubleshooting. Test your system using the Alesssis as the interface. If you are using the right driver and still have problems, then most likely there is a DPC latency issue. That problem will generally not be solved by buying another interface. Incidentally DPCLatecnyChecker is apparently still not working properly on Windows 8 so LatecyMon is a better choice.

I think that sorta depends. An MME driver can be a "right" driver, but not offer good performance. If there's no custom driver written for an interface and it has to use something like MME or ASIO4ALL, that might set the performance limits. I always give ASIO4ALL props for being a valiant attempt to trick Windows into doing something it normally doesn't want to do, but it is by definition a kludge. I've also seen it interfere with other drivers, and for at least a few users the only solution was to uninstall it completely.

I can promise you that ASIO4ALL is better than using some of the Alesis ASIO drivers. I know, I used an Alesis FW12 Multimix for several years, nearly all of which was with ASIO4ALL. Their WDM drivers are okay but all ASIO4ALL is, is a wrapper for WDM drivers so they are treated as ASIO drivers by Sonar. I got better results with ASIO4ALL than I ever did using the ALESIS WDM drivers. Why? I have no idea but it was definitely the better option for me. Lower latency & rock solid performance. Is ASIO4ALL better than decent manufacturers drivers? Definitely not. Is ASIO4ALL better than crappy manufacturers drivers? Definitely yes.

I've actually had pretty good luck using the IO2 Express on my laptop. A couple of things that I've found important to making it work: 1) delete ASIO4ALL - Use WDM/KS mode. 2) do not share the USB port used for the IO|2 with any other devices or hubs. 3) Do not use with wireless mouse or keyboard. 4) Turn off WiFi with the physical switch, not just software disable 5) Use laptop with power supply - not battery. Power settings set to best performance when not using battery. Test with all FX disabled. Surprisingly, some of the FX may lead you to make bad settings decisions on your buffer size. They can make latency seem worse than it actually is. Glen

Just so everybody knows, I'm using a desktop, not a laptop, though I do use a WiFi adapter, so maybe I'll start unplugging it completely (or maybe boot up without it in when I want to work on music?) And thanks everybody for the advice so far. So I've downloaded LatencyMon, will run it soon. I checked Device Manager, I can easily see which device is my interface, but Windows, as usual, didn't find any new drivers for it own its own. I did update drivers for my mobo's on-board audio, don't know that that even makes a difference since I'm not using it (although it might have updated some drivers). I want to try some WDM drivers, but I'm pretty sure I've tried onboard ones before and they didn't work too well. I searched for a bit online, found a 64bit driver from a site called AudioScience.com, it's a combo WDM/ASIO driver. Not sure if there's an option to not install the ASIO part as I haven't installed yet. Figured I'd see if anyone knew of a particular 64bit WDM driver they could recommend, or where to get one (again Alesis doesn't seem to have anything for it, looked at their site yet again). Lastly, I had also checked for a 64bit MME driver, just case that could work well for me, but couldn't find anything. A lot of driver searches through Google pop up the ASIO4ALL site, so I'm kinda going in circles.

- Deleted ASIO4ALL, can you recommend a WDM driver?
- Device is on its own port
- It's a desktop, but my mouse and keyboard are wireless, only ones I have.
- Again, desktop, but I'm using a WiFi adapter, any idea whether it'd be best to unplug or if i should startup with it unplugged so maybe no utilities start with it?
- Again, batter thing not relevant, but I did switch power mode to 'best performance'.

Zero The IO|2 Express is a windows compliant device and does not need additional drivers when used in WDM/KS mode. There is no need to load any additional drivers. In fact, they could cause a lot of problems. I have used this on my desktop computer (AMD X4) using the windows drivers with latency <11 with no problems. Try removing your WiiFi card and make sure that you are not using any Blue Tooth (wireless) devices like keyboards, mice, and headphones. You are 'listening' on the outputs of the Alesis IO|2 aren't you? I monitor using the Alesis outputs to an amplifier and speakers. You may want to check that it is set to 24 bit both in the Windows control panel (under sound) and within Sonar. Re-run the Wave Profiler if you change anything here. Wireless mice and keyboards are known problems. Don't have any old ones around to test with? Glen

gcolbert, Thanks, my mouse and keyboard aren't bluetooth, just RF, or whatever the other option is. And no, no older ones around, I can double check, but since they're not bluetooth, which I know needs its own utility, hopefully there won't be much problem. I'll give it a shot in WDM mode now. Yeah monitoring through the iO2, usually with headphones. I'll check in Windows for the 24bit, and I just switched record to 24bit the other day, but I read a lot of places that 'Render' should be 32bit. Is that what you've got, or have you tried both ways on that?

ZeroContrast, Turn off Core Parking. Not sure why this remains an often overlooked issue as it is very common. See below link for more information. Many have had the same problem with dropouts, stuttering, etc.. before turning off core parking. You may also want to check in your System Bios to see if there are any Power saving utilities enabled, or Intel SpeedStep, if so you may want to turn them off as well. http://forum.cakewalk.com/Windows-7-amp-Core-Parking-a-better-way-to-Turn-It-OFF-m1861804.aspx This user NYSR in the below thread had a new system, poor performance. Core Parking was his issue.... http://forum.cakewalk.com/Proper-PC-tweaks-m2997308.aspx Fastbiker is correct, ASIO4ALL is better than a crappy manufacturer driver and many people use it without issues, more likely your problem is related to the above.... Good Luck. Regards

While your IO|2 may be plugged into a unique port on your computer, these ports tend to be shared/bussed with internal (on the motherboard) hubs. It may be worth while looking at the system hardware under USB in the control panel to ensure that it is not sharing with other devices internally (especially your wireless stuff). Wireless drivers tend to own the CPU cycles while they are waiting for start and stop bits. Same issue as WiiFi cards. They can't look for a simple voltage change like a device that is hard wired, so they 'listen' real hard (forcing the CPU to wait). You are hearing stuttering and drops and not possibly a dirty headphone connection? I know that I have had sound issues caused by a crappy 1/4 inch to 1/8 inch stereo adapter plug in the headphone jack on the Alesis. Glen

Mark, Thanks for the links, I'll have a look at Core Parking, I know Alex mentioned SpeedStep (or AMD equivalent, which is what I would need). I looked into it a little, but it seemed kind of tedious to access, but I guess it'll be worth pursuing. Glen, Yeah it's definitely stutters. If it happens during recording, I go back and the timing is off of the recorded track at that point. When you mention Control Panel, I assume you mean Device Manager specifically right? I've got it pulled up, but no clue how to check if any are shared. Do you know how off the top of your head? If not I can look it up myself.

Hey zero, just to add my two cents, Try disabling your network card, in device manager, I have a pretty fast system, but it's even slicker without the network running, even when not used.
