New three-part BBC2 documentary series: "Secrets Of The Pop Song"

Hi guys, I just came across this; it certainly looks pretty interesting, whatever genre you're into:

BBC Two explores the process of songwriting in new three-part series, Secrets Of The Pop Song, which follows the pen to paper to first public performance.

Each episode sees songwriter, producer and musician Guy Chambers, collaborating with an artist to write a new song each week – a ballad, an anthem and a breakthrough single, with a variety of celebrated musical contributors divulging the secrets of the trade along the way.

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright joins Guy to write a ballad, The Noisettes link up with him in the studio for the anthem programme and music producer Mark Ronson works alongside him to create a breakthrough single. The series hears from songwriting big-hitters throughout, including Sting, Brian May, Boy George, Neil Tennant, Jessie J and Diane Warren.

The scheduled dates (subject to change) are:
  • Sat 2nd July 9.40pm – Episode 1 - Ballad
  • Sat 9th July 9.40pm – Episode 2 - Breakthrough Single
  • Sat 16th July 9.40pm – Episode 3 - Anthem

Here's the bumph for this Saturday's first episode:

Guy Chambers, who co-wrote Robbie Williams' Angels, presents an insider's guide to crafting a modern pop hit, being joined each week by a different musician to collaborate on the creation of a new song.

He begins by teaming up with singer Rufus Wainwright to write a ballad, taking the process from initial idea through to the first public performance. Sting, Boy George, Neil Tennant and Don Black also talk about their hits and lyricist Diane Warren reveals a few tricks of the trade.

I don't think iPlayer can be used outside the UK.

May appear on YouTube - though theoretically it's not supposed to.

yes but they pick a song that they solely weren't the co-writers of... sure pick the other stuff...

if you know about the certain "click" of UK writers / producers in the pop industry that's interesting in itself (and pretty much a closed shop)

if they did a thing about a lot of the  NDA's in the music / pop industry that'd open some folks eyes.. besides the few well  known ones.

but obv. they don't due to them being NDA's

    <<sigh>> I can't even do 'pedantic' correctly

Is that one of the modes of a scale, like Supercaliphrygian?

(btw, BBC sounds like a pretty boring chord progression... just sayin')

Click (or Clique) in the music business?

    No.

    Never.

    They use a clique track.

(I use a cliche track personally.)

Not yet, but it has some really great error messages telling me why it's not working and what it intends to do to fix the problem.

So, it's better than the forum software?

Here's the bumph for this Saturday's first episode:

Guy Chambers, who co-wrote Robbie Williams' Angels, presents an insider's guide to crafting a modern pop hit, being joined each week by a different musician to collaborate on the creation of a new song.

He begins by teaming up with singer Rufus Wainwright to write a ballad, taking the process from initial idea through to the first public performance. Sting, Boy George, Neil Tennant and Don Black also talk about their hits and lyricist Diane Warren reveals a few tricks of the trade.

Too bad we can't get it here
