New to Cakewalk
Hello everyone. I'm new to anything Cakewalk. You've got an Adobe Audition CS6 person here. I seem to like Sonar X2 very much, and it looks like I'll be moving over to Cakewalk. I'm learning my way around fast as I can, but have a few questions. I'm having trouble finding a way to move the transport play head in very very small amounts forward and backward without using the mouse. I'm used to using the arrow key to nudge the play head in such manor. Also I'm used to holding the right or left arrow key for continuous forward or backward movement. What if any is the procedure to accomplish this in Sonar X2. Clicking the fast forward and/or rewind button moves too far, I think around 18 frames. I'd like less. I hope I've made sense explaining this, Thanks. Sorry I've been using Adobe products since 93.

Welcome to the forum Elliot. What you call the play head is called the now time in Sonar. There are several help videos in the Sonar university section of their site that will get you up and running quickly. They are free to watch and check out. You should also consider getting some of the tutorial videos at the cakewalk store. They are cheap enough and you will learn a great deal. I really don't nudge I just zoom in on the clips I want. I click on the clip in the place I want the now time to go. That seems easier to me. If you are having trouble getting the now time where you want it then make sure you turn off snap to grid.

You need a jog wheel, if you have an Ipad or an android tablet there are quite a few apps that would handle those duties really well. Peace Ben

For nudge use the numpad. For example to nudge right 1 hit 3 on the numpad. To nudge left 1 hit 1. I also welcome you to the forum, Elliot.

This is to nudge selected items, such as midi or audio clips. I think what the OP is talking about is nudging the "now time" left and right by small increments. I do not believe this is possible in SONAR. If it is, please correct me as I would like to know as well.

I think the op needs to learn about the new zoom features and just click where he wants the now time to go, but snap to grid may be getting in the way so he should learn it's function and maybe turn it off if he does not need it.

But I most often turn snap off for this. I'm not sure why to OP is asking this. BTW I do have a CS with a jog wheel. It wont to this. It will move the now time by measure. Though it can be set to other increments. It occurs to me that one could use the navigator to place the now time but that might be too fussy.

See this post for how to set up CAL files and keybindings to allow Now-time nudging: http://forum.cakewalk.com/fb.ashx?m=1365944 I have NowBack and NowForward CAL files bound to left and right cursor keys. I also keep shortcuts on my desktop to the CAL files so I can easily edit the tick values to change the resolution for different situations. Very handy feature. The Bakers should really build this in.

Good one Brundlefly! I agree, the bakers should really bake this in. It's a great feature for working with Video or audio not linked to a grid and I miss that ALOT! So yeah, bakers, bake it in please You can nudge frame by fframe in the video view but it's cumbersome at best. Will investigate your sollution Brundlefly!

Thank you EVERYONE for the quick replies. I'll begin understanding "Now Time". I'll work with the Zoom, and get the snap fixed. @brundlefly I will definitely be looking closely at NowBack and NowForward CAL files bound to left and right cursor keys. You may have come as close as I can get to the answer of my question. Like I said, and I apologize, but I have been an Adobe person since 93. As well as a Sound Forge person since 93. Back when the software fit on a floppy. Ask me about Premiere, Acid, and Sound Forge, and I'll have a lot of answers. Thanks again everyone. I'm making the switch to Cakewalk. I wish I wouldn't have waited 20 years, I'm way behind. It's nothing like Audition CS6. Since I'm familiar with Adobe I got through that quick and easy. It does work very nice, but I'm coming over to the other side. Tanks for the welcome.
