New to using dual monitors , what do others do?
Hi , just a amateur user here , I just purchased an additional monitor , I found it so great I bought another the next day as the old monitor was a different size and nowhere near as clear! Few questions I have a docking view in (2) with the console , PRV and Score , I use D to remove , restore this , with the track view dragged across the two monitors . Is it possible to have to console views , one with busses and one with tracks? or is it possible to undock the bus element of the track view? Technical question : my PC has DVi outputs to the monitors so I am just using a convertor (1 to HDMI the other to VGA) is there a significant change if I purchase a new graphics card with 2 HDMi outs or is this a waste of money? Just love how the two monitors work , could never go back ! Regards Ric ,

Hey. Yeah it's hard to imagine how I worked before... I undock the console and leave it permanently on the right monitor, and I also use that for soft synths / FX windows, and OS browser windows and various other things. For some reason I don't like to have the PRV over there so it stays in the dock, which stays at the bottom of the main view on the left monitor here, expanding as needed with a shift-D.

1 - you cannot "split" the CV up into different views. 2 - an additional graphics card would probably be a waste of money. Sonar isn't really a graphics intensive program so if what you've got already works, leave it as it is.

I do main right, floating left, but be mindful of setting this up in Windows or it will seem like there is a "wall" between the two monitors. Windows defaults to second monitor to right of the main.

I do the same as subtlearts, I extend Sonar itself across both monitors without any projects open. i then open the Normal Template and modify it to have the the Track view on the left monitor only so that the control bar is across the top of both screen and the tracks view is inly in the Left monitor. I then un-dock the Multi dock and move it to the right monitor and then dock the console view there. i now have access to Browser, Console synths Media, plugs and other things. I also dock my plug-ins in the windows while it is open so I can edit them if needed. I save it as a temple bu adding some tracks and buses and the plugins I use the most for instruments.

Left monitor is main Sonar view with PRV in multidock, along with tempo view and staff when needed. PRV has a frozen tab in mulitidock with most important tracks so I can see them together. Console is undocked and stretched across both monitors. VSTi's are in right monitor along with the marker view (undocked, floating and sized smaller). Right monitor also holds One Note which I use constantly for notes during a session. Looking at a 3rd monitor now for just non-Sonar stuff.

Track view on the left, plugins/PRV/instrument rack on the right. Sometimes, it's day-job work stuff on the left, this forum on the right. The difference between analog and digital video isn't huge. If your setup's working fine for you now I wouldn't waste money on another video adapter.

You know you can change this quite simply by right clicking anywhere on your desktop and choosing Screen Resolution. From there you can drag the virtual monitors where you want - up/down/left/right

27" monitor above and a 34" below. I used to run track view on one and console on another, but I find it easier to just use scenes for this. So Sonar is on the big bottom monitor. Up top I have the Waves Durrough that is on my two buss always displayed, along with a Durrough on any track I am working on at the moment. I also use the upper monitor for open plugin windows.

Three monitors! Top left: main. Bottom left: PRVs, many of them. Right, 'portrait' mode so it is tall and thin: Event list, pdfs or help files as needed. Console, when needed, bottom left with the PRVs minimized. Plugins, VST instruments, top left floating on top of the main window.

I run 2 x 23" but I found having them side-by-side is too wide which means either obscuring my audio monitoring OR pushing them so far away that I have to lean forward and squint :O) So I brought my Left Monitor forward and down to where a touch screen PC would be, at about the same angle (custom stand) and the Right hand monitor is higher up to the rear. The two monitors and my controller/desk make a triangle. It's the most comfortable I have ever been in my own studio. Front monitor is Track view, piano roll etc, back monitor is Console, meters, video playback etc. Works great for my needs. You have to find what works for yours, and don't fall in to a rut with it either. Have fun! Ludwig

Screensets could help you to customize even more the TV / CV.... Could use one displaying the console's buses, another for tracks... Lock or unlock to taste.

Never used screen sets much , or quick keys. so now I am getting into these big time , also found console view can be restricted only to show audio tracks and non muted , this is a whole new world for me , great , using Key D , I and C. I have moved the windows font size back down to normal now , jury still out on this one. I have varifocal lenses so large text can be better for me , also don't think stacking monitor above will not help me . Thanks for all your advice Ric

I ran with 3 monitors for a while, but reclaimed space and dropped back to 2, and often I will run on just 1, depending on what I am doing. When running with dual monitors, I normally have the console opened on one, and track pane opened on the other. If opened windows get in the way I can drag them over to the other monitor, or just collapse things like the Inspector or Browser panes. It sure does look nice to see Sonar stretching across a couple of screens - and it gives me lots of options for what is opened on which screen, which speeds things up as well as just keeping clutter to a minimum. I think a lot of us use the 2nd monitor for Console View... sort of like keeping the mixer open all the time which is the metaphor I am used to making music with (old school) mixing desk. There is so much going on during a project that I can't imagine what a PITA it used to be to keeping manually changing views. Jim

I guess I'm the odd man out here... I keep SONAR's Track View stretched out over both 24" monitors and use D to switch to PRV or CV - I prefer having that extra width available for the timeline or whichever view I choose.

Hi Ludwig, Would you mind posting a picture showing your setup? This sounds very interesting and I think could benefit from your idea, yet I can't fully image how it looks like. I currently use a 32" Smart TV screen mounted to the wall about 1.5 m away which works really nice, but the 2nd 23"screen doesn't get so much use as it is off to the side because this is the only place where it does not get in the way of the 2 sets of near-fields ... I had thought about mounting another 32" above the current one, but that would probably turn my Rehab into the Star Trek Bridge ...

stevec I guess I'm the odd man out here... I keep SONAR's Track View stretched out over both 24" monitors and use D to switch to PRV or CV - I prefer having that extra width available for the timeline or whichever view I choose.
Yeah, I know this is really easy to see for myself, but how well is the gap between the screens dealt with this way? If a channel strip or anything else ended up split, my OCD would get in the way

One of the reasons I like to run the Console View on its own monitor is that I run it on a touch monitor and can mix with either touch of the mouse. The larger 27 inch monitor is my touch screen while the smaller monitor is for track view. Just an additional thought to my workflow. Jim

The only real issue for me with the two bezels is when using CV, but in those cases I just drag the separator between tracks and busses so the questionable channel is completely on one monitor. For TV or PRV it's rarely a problem, and when it is, I just drag the timeline a little.

mudgel I do as Stevec but am thinking about trying to use the 2 X 24" monitors in portrait mode and seeing how that goes.
I'd be curious how that goes... never really thought about it before!

I use a 47" ultra hi def TV with track view on the bottom and console/staff/piano roll on the top.
I can get a lot of tracks in each view and all on the same screen.
The uhd lets me have the monitor/tv close to my face (about 2ft away) without losing detail. The only problem is that there is so much real estate I can't see it all without moving my head or dragging a window down to where it is comfortable, but that is a good problem to have.
