New track.

Hi !
This is my latest effort ! Its for a group (Cello,Viola,2 violins,Basson, and Clarinet) who have agreed to play and record the arrangement for me so I'll keep you posted when I get the second recording !!
Couple of difficulties hit me when I was writing this, and any advise would be appreciated !! When theres only 2 violins in a group like this, maybe its better to stick to unison or octaves ?? I'm thinking that would give a bigger sound than in harmony, also what do two violins sound like over Cello and viola ?? Do they compete well volume wise ? A lot of the time I'm using unisons, and octaves, like the bassoon doubles the cello for example, and the clarinet doubles the violin 8 va.Is this advisable in a small band such as this ? How would you go about it ??
Anyway have a listen and tell me what you think ! Its called Sety, please follow the link,
Kev

Very nice melody and orchestration.  I was expecting a full band when the e-guitar started playing, but anyways.  But this is not Eletronica:Dance song by far.

    Hi Vicente,
Yes I'm terrible at this- I also put my dance stuff in the classical box !! Haha it keeps people on their toes at least ! Glad you liked the piece ! I kept the middle section (with the electric guitar) fairly empty just to let things breath. Thanks for listening,

Nice work! Unison/octave violins work well here. Harmony ones would work also and not compete with the cello as long as they are playing different notes and are in their proper space.

I look forward to you posting new tracks on here Kev as i know you usually produce some good stuff.

you're really are outdoing yourself with each new piece.

I Liked this a lot. But i thought it was going to go somewhere, only to find the song fading away.

    Hey Scott,
I think I'm going to try the last section (the outro) in harmony then.By the times it reachs the end it really needs a change to break things up.Maybe going from unison to harmony might just do the trick ! Thanks for the tip,and taking time to listen !

    Hey Mark
Thanks for the compliments ! Yes I've made some good progress these last 6 months, lots off things are starting to click in place !! Hmm for this song I know what you mean,I'm not happy with the ending as it is to be honest.I think I need to look at some of the earlier ideas in the piece and try to get them all tied in together somehow at the end.But yes you're right,it doesn't really sound finished as it is.Thanks for listening !

cool stuff Kev, as ever, it could stand a little mastering just to loud it up a bit. pretty different in the beginning but more recognisably you in the middle. very good you are getting to work with real artists too!

Liking it very much so far - keep at it. I like the way you combine the guitar strumming with the orchestral stuff. Can't say too much on the mix at the mo as only on lappy, so I'll leave that to others.

Yep the guitar gives it some realness I guess !! No idea how the guitar will compete volume wise with a real quartet, but in a couple of days I'm gonna find out :)
    Thanks for listening

I think it would be a blast to hear my stuff played by real musicians.  Well, I guess I have a couple of times, but never a real orchestra.  :-)  Anyway, I like it too.  I like the guitar with the orchestra.  I guess since others mentioned it, I noticed that the ending wasn't quite an ending. And at only 2:00 minutes, it wouldn't hurt to repeat one of the motifs.  But who am I to talk...you're quite the composer here!

But if you're so inclined, I imagine early some morning, another ending will come to you.  That's often when mine get started.  :-)  As to all the other technical stuff...I have no idea.  Sounds good to me though!

    Hey Janet
Sorry for my late reply. No really after writing and printing all the scores I feel like I can't do anymore to this piece !!!! Way too overfamiliar lol.But yep maybe I will come back to it. I'm glad you liked the essence of the piece anyway :)
Yeah its great to have the music played by real musicians. It totally changes your approach and your thinking than if you're making a midi mockup. For example I knew the clarinets highest comfortable note was C7. So I had to be careful about where I wrote for the clarinet !! Also I knew the clarinet player was pretty cool at improvising (but not the violinists) so that meant too I could write a couple of Ad Lib passages for him at the end. I have no idea if it will sound good or not to be honest, but for sure I learnt a lot.It forced me to think about the limitations of writing for a 7 piece band. Who would give the track weight, who would the mids and the highs etc.....GREAT EXPERIENCE !!!!
Thanks for listening ! I'm trying to get a date set up for them to record the track in a studio.I'll let you know when I get a copy of the final mix !!!

I hear ya. I know it would be GREAT experience to work with real musicians.  There's a french horn player in one of the bands I play in these days and I've learned a lot more than I ever knew about writing for french horns.  (which was nothing except what keys they can play by what notes will play in prv)  lol  Not sure where or when I'll ever meet others, but maybe one a year is all I can take anyway.  lol

Can't wait to hear the real thing. :)

Hey Kev, They are right about the ending, but you could look at it another way.  I heard David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) say to an interviewer that asked him why "Wish You Were Here" sounded 'incomplete';  "Maybe the next time you hear it, it will be different".  I bet that guy has listened to that song 10,000 times since then, and every time he thinks somehow it has been 'completed'.  The point is, the mark of a great song is whether you can intrest someone enough to listen to it again.  If they think they might have missed something the first time, it will draw them back every time!   Tom
