Newbie Question

I am extremely new to pc based music recording.  I currently have 64 bit Windows 7 using Music Creator 5 (updated to 5.0.5) & trying to use either the SI Drum Kit or EZ Drummer to lay down some drum tracks.

When I listen to a sample of a drum "groove" as EZ Drummer calls them, it sounds fine.  After dragging/dropping the same groove into a track only parts of it play.  It seems to be "missing" parts of the drum kit.  In the case of EZ Drummer, if I have the drum kit showing at the same time as Music Creator is playing the track I can see the little "midi" word flashing blue under the drum kit.

The steps I use to add the soft synth & create the track are:
  • click the "+" sign, then 'instrument track', 'vstplugins', 'ezdrummer'
  • then 'open grooves' & select "EZD pop/rock" from the libraries, "pop/rock" from 4/4 straight, groove 01, variation 19
  • click play & in EZ Drummer it sounds fine.  I can see Music Creator's sound level bopping to the groove & everything seems happy
  • I stop the sample groove from playing in EZ Drummer & then drag it into the track in MC
  • Now when I click play in MC it plays the track but does not sound the same as when I play the groove in the EZ Drummer window.
I really hope that makes sense when you read it.

I find the same thing happens if I try to use the SI Drum Kit too.

I have no MIDI hardware - but if this was truly the problem surely the preview of the groove wouldn't work either would it?!?

Hopefully it's something I'm doing wrong - & it's probably something rather stupidly simple.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Are you dragging the clip into a MIDI track? Is the output of that MIDI track set to EZD? Or Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth?
The mapping of the EZD kits is different than General MIDI, so if a C5 note in EZD plays a drum, the C5 note in GM may not have a drum assigned to it (just examples; I don't know the specific mapping of EZD or GM). You can check that by opening the Piano Roll view (PRV) of the MIDI track and dragging the unheard note to a different note until you hear it.

Yeah I was thinking that the sound you are missing is mapped to a sound that isn't there. ...As Greg pointed out above.... drag the "missing" sound's note in staff or PRV until you can hear something.

I don't use this part of the program but I know what you're talking about. It happens in other synths I do use.

Right. When I write a drum track in MC/SHS and want it to play through my Alesis SR-16, I usually have to move a few notes in order to hear them from the Alesis.

Thanks for the quick responses.  I'm using an instrument track, not midi.  I've opened the track in staff view & in the case of one of the drum fills, there is 1 note that is not getting played, but the same note appears elsewhere in the drum fill & it does play.

I also tried doing a midi track after reading your post, with ezd as the output but had the same results.

...also, in staff view when I click the note that doesn't play... it plays!?!

Instrument tracks are MIDI tracks already set up with the associated soft synth.
Yeah, I have had that happen to me, too. Try deleting the note, adding another on a different stave then dragging it to the right place. That's worked for me before.
It could be that if the preceding note's length extends into the unheard note's start time, the second note may not play. Shorten the duration of the preceding note (right-click the note to see and alter it's properties).

Randomly missed MIDI-notes are usually due to too low buffer in "MIDI Buffers..prepare using" (or something like that). Raising the buffer should help.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.
The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.
