Newbie adds 1 note & gets 6 measures of the same note? What help feature have I engaged?

Online help says what follows, for adding a single note to a single track. But I get, instead, 6 measures of notes? I'm sure I have engaged some helpful advanced feature but multiple hours of work still haven't left me with a clue as to what I am doing wrong. Most of the following is a direct quote from the relevant online help.
"ADDING A NOTE
To add a note:
1.
Select
the Smart tool
or Freehand tool  in the Control Bar.
2.
Do one of the following:
With the Smart tool , drag where you want to draw a new note.
With the Freehand tool , click where you want to insert a new note
   A note event is inserted."

My problem is that this is simply not true for this newbie! On 3/6/2017 doing this results in a pattern of same pitch notes all across the next 6-7 measures of my composition. What “Advanced Help” do I have to turn off in order to be able to simply write or erase a single note one at a time?

Any help would be deeply appreciated!

Midi notes are always added to midi clips. If there is no midi clip where you add the note, a new clip is created (or when adding it closely to an existing clip, it is appended to that clip).

I guess, you are adding the note to a clip that is connected to other clips. In that case, the change is made to all connected clips.

In track view, connected clips have a dotted border, unconnected clips have a solid border. If you want to change one of several connected clips only, you have to unconnect it before, which can be done from the context menu of the clip.
