Newbie question how do yo copy and paste
I am an old newbie that is I am 63 and done the analogue tape bit of recording and am now trying to get into Daw. I have X2 studio and have figured out the erasure tool to get rid of stuff at the beginning and end of tracks that I don't want and I have been playing with EQ and have found out how to add efx etc it is all audio I record guitars drums and bass mainly however I have a drummer who does not or won't see the pleasure of simplicity and in the middle 8 of a blues song (how blue can you get by BB King)there is a kind of call and reply thing where the vocalist sings then the whole band replies with exactly the same riff that is except our irrepressible drummer where he got the first break right but then goes on to play a different drum roll for each of the other 6 breaks all in time but wrong. Now what I want to do is copy his first effort and then paste it to the next 6 breaks he did wrong and I know you should be able to do this with Sonar but can not find anything on utube etc can anyone help.

Highlight the clip you want to copy then File -> edit -> copy, click where you want to paste the clip file -> edit -> paste. Control C and Control V also works and saves a few clicks. There are other ways to access the edit menu but I don't have Sonar open at the moment. BTW......Scott's X2 Power book is awesome for looking up those little show stoppers. I hope this helps. Rocky

Hold down Alt when using the mouse to select the section you want to cut out. Make sure you have Snap to Grid off unless you're cutting on a measure or beat boundary.

Not sure if things are different now as I'm still on 8.5 version, But a few things I do with this situation. Clone the track first to create a working copy. Mute the original. Right click and choose the " create V vocal clip " This gives the track little diagonal corners. It's important that the song is to a click track to do the next part as it's easier to work in whole measures. Set snap to whole. If the song is in human time then set the snap to the smallest resolution ( 128 notes) and pray the band didn't slow down or speed up during this part. ( an option at this point is to use split ..Go to the start and end of the part you want and right click and choose "split" reason is you can drag these around easier ) Now do this for each segment your working with on the measure lines. . To highlight the part you want hold down ALT key while dragging. Now do your copy paste routine. Make sure to set paste options to Replace old with new. Supper handy for fixing up live recordings of a band where there are little boo boos. You can even do this with Vocals where you sang the first chorus better than the second. For me this has been a big feature of switching from tape based to a DAW, the editing is where it shines. The rest,, hmmmm...

bigbob63 - here's an additional / alternative suggestion. You can do the following steps for an individual selected track, for a few selected tracks, or for all the tracks in a song. Works the same in all cases. 1. Select the track or tracks 2. Figure out what measure and beat is your starting point for the copy. That will show in the blue display at the top if you click your mouse to put the timeline at the desired starting point. If the starting point is say the beginning of measure 21, just remember this: 21 1 3. Figure out what measure and beat the copy section should end at. Let's say it is 8 measures, then remember this: 29 1 4. As long as the correct track(s) is/are selected, under the Edit menu choose Select By Time. 5. For the starting time put in say 21 1, and the end time say 29 1 6. Then you can Copy. Control C copies just the data. Control Alt C allows you to select more stuff to copy, like the markers. 7. Paste is Control V, but Control Alt V (paste special) is much better because with that you can indicate where you want to paste it in the timeline and starting on what track ( if you're copying/ pasting all tracks you'd paste beginning from Track 1). Say you want to paste measures at measure 105. You would put starting at 105 1 This is a very surgical method and precise. It's easy if you do it once or twice to get the feel for it.. Also you can use the same technique to Cut a piece out of the song, or to create 8 measures of new space, etc.
Two internal 2TB SSDs laptop stuffed with Larry's deals and awesome tools. Studio One is the cat's meow as a DAW now that I've migrated off of Sonar. Using BandLab Cakewalk just to grab old files when migrating songs.

split the drum break into its own clip (in track view hold the alt key which will bring up the scissors pointer and click on the beginning and end of the break), then click on the top of the break clip, press the control key (a little + sign will appear) and drag the clip to the new position.

Thanks speedtom I think you have a good name for my drummer in Germany wolpertinger he can play the most amazing Ginger baker stuff but ask him to play something simple like a waltz and he is stumped imagine a 60 year old child who takes in too many E's in his food or animal out of the muppets. Well guys thanks for your help but I still can not copy and paste I probably need Noddies guide to daw or something Bluzdog I will look out for scotts book Daveny5 I tried your method when you are trying to copy and paste I am using the select tool (the arrow) is there anyother tool I should be selecting? Cactus Music I am stumped at the start as I do not know how to clone a track Lawajava I tried your method and could not get it to work. Swamptooth your idea came closest although it took me ages to find out that the scissors dont appear when pressing alt if you use the selection tool instead of the smart tool after I realised this I pressed control and then this enabled me to move the copied bit over the first bad bit however when I did this it left a big blank space where the original bit was which I had copied and when played there was no drums. Hi Bob, The learning curve with X2 is huge. There are some great videos out that will get you up and running. Cake TV has some free ones, a search on Youtube brings up some and there a some you can buy in the Cake store and at SWA and Groove 3. Good luck. Rocky

Hi there Bob Here's what I'd do, step by step. It's not perfect, especially, for example, if you've got reverb printed on the recorded drum track, but it should get you somewhere near. I've used a mono track in my example, but it works just as well for a stereo track, or multiple tracks. Here's the drum track I'm going to work on, I've added a drum fill at the end of every second bar: Let's assume, like you, that I want to replace the fill at the end of measures 4, 6 and 8 with the drum fill at the end of measure 2: First off, you'll need to use the Split Tool to separate off the fill you want to keep. Don't turn off Snap To Grid, unless it's absolutely necessary to allow you to split the track exactly where you want to. In my example, I've changed the Snap To Grid resolution to 1/32 of a measure, as that allows me to nicely split off the fill. Place the Now Time Marker on the drum track at the point you wish to split, and either left click and use the keyboard shortcut ' S', or right click and choose Split from the options: Now repeat the process to Split off the corresponding clips at the end of measures 4, 6 and 8: Once you've isolated these three clips, hold down the Ctrl key on your PC keyboard and left click on them in turn to select them all. Now, hit Delete on your keyboard, or alternatively right click on the final clip after you've selected it and click on Edit > Delete: The easiest and quickest way to copy and paste the fill you want to use in the three 'gaps' you have created is to do this. First, click on the middle mouse button and change the Smart Tool cursor to the Move Tool. Now hover the mouse pointer over the clip, then hold down the Ctrl key and hold down the left mouse button. Continuing to hold down the left mouse button, you can now literally drag the clip into one of the gaps. Providing you have Snap To Grid set to the same resolution you used to split the clips, and also providing that the gaps you have created are the same size as the clip you are moving, you should be able to drop (let go of the mouse button) the clip exactly into position. Note that holding down the Ctrl button when dragging copies the clip - the original will not be moved (Tip: after the first drag, remember to deselect the clip you have just moved, or the next Ctrl-Drag operation will move that as well as the original clip): Don't worry if you don't drop the clip exactly, you can always move it around after with the Move Tool selected. Now all you have to do is repeat the process to copy the fill to the other two gaps: Hopefully, that's job done! Steve

Steve, that is an awesome post! I had to reply to this thread just from the "wow" factor of that. Bob, in addition to what Rocky said, this forum has some awesome folks who know their stuff (not implying I am one of them!). If you can provide as much detail as possible with a question, the response time is pretty quick. I consider myself more an "avid hobbyist," and after 14 years I am still learning. The best way to learn is start simple, search in the references, and ask. Cakewalk's community of users is one of the coolest things with this DAW imho.
ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero (Wi-Fi AC), i7-8700k, 16GB RAM, GTX-1070Ti, Win 10 Pro, Saffire PRO 24 DSP, A-300 PRO, plus numerous gadgets and gizmos that make or manipulate sound in some way.

Hi Guys you have been more than helpful with this and Steve that was great I did manage to do what I wanted and I will explain how but I am going to try your method as it looks far more useful. Thanks for the video link Swamptooth I did try doing exactly what you were doing but was putting the copied part on top of the bit I wanted to replace in other words I was trying to put the good bit into something that all ready existed and if I did this the good bit where I had copied from disappeared and the bit that I pasted too played both the bit I wanted and the bit I did not, but your method works well if you have blank bits to paste into. So I started looking at the whole thing again and discovered that copy and paste does not work the same as using word Photoshop or anything else I have and what I was doing was highlighting the bit I wanted to copy and either edit/copy or control C then highlighting the bit that I wanted to replace then selecting either controller V or paste this did not work I then discovered by miracle or accident that if I copy using the usual method above then move the (I don't know what it is called but the line that runs from top to bottom over the tracks to show you were you are playing I’ll call it the timeline) timeline to where you want to paste then press control V then this paste's in perfectly so I repeated this 6 times over the bad bits then played it back only to discover that I had successfully pasted the bits I wanted where I wanted but the bad bits were playing as well Doh. I then had this eureka moment when I realised that if I used the erasure tool to delete all the bad bits then pasted the good bit into the empty square holes I had nicely created then I would hear only good bits and no bad drummer porn job done, but for such a simple thing it took a lot of lateral thinking and understanding on my part maybe the brain is starting to slow and the excesses of the 1960's is catching up with me. Mettelus thanks for the encouragement and you are right there are some awesome folk on this forum I am now going to load the original and try Steve's method and if it works which I am sure it will I am going to bookmark this and give the bookmark a new title called "How to correct an Errant Drummer" Pity it can only be done in the virtual world LOL Cheers Bob Me

Hi Bob, glad you've got it sorted! The 'timeline' in SONAR is referred to as the Now Time Marker by the way. And yes, you can position it at the point in your track where you want to paste instead of using my drag/copy method. If I'm understanding what you say, the reason that pasting clips over existing clips doesn't overwrite them is probably down to the way SONAR handles this operation by default. You can check what your settings are by going to Edit > Preferences and make certain you have the Advanced option selected at the bottom left of the screen. Now scroll down to the Customization area and select Editing. The area What to do with existing material has three options. I believe that by default it will be set to Blend Old and New - that is why when you pasted your clip onto existing audio, SONAR will have just added the audio to what was already there. @ mettelus - thanks Michael

Hi Steve, Thanks for the help I also changed the settings on editing your method worked apart from the fact I had to use the smart tool plus alt to use the scissors before splitting but having played around and with your help I am not so overwhelmed with copy and pasting parts now. There was no reverb with the drums the band is being recorded on my Zoom R16 all at once apart from the vocals and I am of the old school were we were taught that when you recorded any processing you do should be subtractive i.e. noise gates compressors etc and when mixing down everything needs to be additive like reverb and delay. Being able to move parts about is handy and something that I could not do on an old 8 or 24 track tape. Our only problem that I can see is we record live without a click track so the song can be a slightly different timing at the start to the finish so I would have to be careful in the future what part I copied and pasted trouble is I have not got a headphone lead long enough for the drummer or a headphone distribution amp I have a feeling it would put him out of kilter anyway. Cheers Bob

Hi Daveny5, Tried this it does not work unless I delete the parts I am pasting into it won't paste over the part I want rid off but I have a work round and have managed to get this done. It is probably one of these things that if you had an experienced user sitting with you to show you what to do it would probably seem so obvious I think too that folk will in all honesty tell you what to do but can leave out the little in-between things which they are so used to doings at a subconscious level because it is so natural for them and they assume you will do these little steps as well I must admit I am a bit of a numpty when it comes to Daw stuff .
