Newbie question

Hi there,

I am still not sure whether this question belongs in this part of this forum, so please redirect me if required and I'll fix it.

I am considering uopgrading from my very old Pro Audio version of Cakewalk to a newer version of the software (as well as getting the required newer interface and computer...) but need to justify the expense to myself.

Here is my question: I play keys in a cover band and we use some backing tracks for complex stuff that requires it. In the old days we would use an audio click track for the drummer, but we all know that drummers are annoyed and prefer to avoid audio click tracks. I am now researching a way to provide a visual click instead of an audio one.

I wonder if Cakewalk would provide some means of creating a clearly visible image (a twinkling screen, a color flashing light circle, or something similar) that would twinkle in sync with a MIDI track. In other words, I would program a specific track in a MIDI file that would contain MIDI Note ON signals at every bar, and these would cause my laptop screen to twinkle, or cause some flashy indicator on the laptop screen to flash in the proper time signature. This way I could simply play the MIDI file on a laptop running Cakewalk (duly connected to my keyboard workstation, which would respond playing the backing tracks) while leaving the laptop near the drummer with the screen facing him. He would be able to get a visual cue of time and we would all be happy campers.

So, has anyone out there ever devised this sort of arrangement? Is it feasible with any of the Cakewalk DAWs? If not, can anyone suggest other means of providing such visual MIDI click track?

Thanks in advance for any suggestion you may send my way.

I think you can have MC6 (music creator 6) provide a large time window... easy to see.  It runs the count/beat numbers in big red easy to see format. That might work as long as the drummer is watching it and staying on the numbers.

But I think a better way might simply be to have the tracks loud enough for the drummer to hear them clearly and stay in time using audible clues with the tracks.  That might require the backing track to have a piano or guitar intro which defines the time clearly.

I don't know a single drummer who likes to play to a click. So give them something else audible and rehearse with it.

    Hope that helps.
