Newbie struggling with inserting Studio Instruments Drum Kit in Home Studio XL project

I've been searching for a post on this but nothing hits it exactly...  I am trying to insert a Studio Instruments Drum Kit pattern into my project.  As instructed in another thread, I have created the track and then dragged the program into the track timeline from the plug-in interface.  When doing this, it adds like 8 new tracks and in the last one, it puts a few measures of the drum pattern.

Questions:
1)  Why does it create a whole bunch of new tracks with nothing in them?
2)  How do I get the drum pattern to continue indefinitely?  I am just trying to prototype a song idea and want this pattern to play throughout the song.

Thanks in advance for any help...  Been sitting here for two hours trying to figure it out and need some help!

    Welcome to the forum.
You don't drag the program; you drag the MIDI clips that are in the program.
Make sure it's a MIDI track you dragging them into.
I can only guess about the multiple tracks. It 'thinks' you're dragging all the MIDI clips that are in the progam into the track, so it creates a new track for each clip.
If the MIDI clips are Groove Clips (most are), the corners of the clips will be bevelled. You can grab either end of the clip and drag it out as far as you want and the clip will repeat for as far as you drag it.
If they are not Groove Clips, you can make them into Groove Clips.

    Welcome, Chad.
On question one, I have never seen that sort of behavior. It's usually a straight forward process.
Can you give more details on your scenario and procedure? If we can replicate it, maybe we can figure out what is causing that.
Include system specs, and as much detail as possible.
As for question two, hover your cursor over the right edge of the MIDI pattern (in the track view). It will turn into a little handle. Click, hold, and drag it out to the right for as many measures as you want.

I believe the OP's workflow description is a bit misleading.

I believe he's using the Insert Soft Synth / or Synth Rack and getting all the audio outputs for SSD.
"Dragging the program" is just a poor choice of words, I assume.

Oneofthesedays, "As instructed in another thread, I created a track.." you say. It's the manual you should be reading :o/ not these threads. There are clear instructions and a tutorial on how to insert soft synths.

How exactly are you inserting the SSD? Do you use "Insert Soft Synth" or "Synth Rack" and in addition to that, you add a MIDI-track? Having some idea of how VSTs work, I strongly believe your description is not quite accurate, because I know it's not possible to "drag a program to the timeline".
There are tutorials about using soft synths etc.
EDIT: Sorry..It's SID, not SSD you're using..

First of all, thank you guys for the support... Much appreciated.  Also, apologies for my lack of appopriate jargon to help accurately describe what the heck is going on...  As for reading the manual...  I have tried that to no avail.

RobertB, Here is some more info:

    - Windows 7 Ultimate, 32-bit
    - Intel Core2 Quad 2.4GHz
    - 4GB RAM
    - Sonar Home Studio7 XL
    - Plug-in is the Studio Instruments Drum Kit included in the XL package
    - Tascam-122L Audio/MIDI USB Interface

From the insert track menu, I select "Instrument Track" and point to the SI Drum Kit that shows up. The MIDI track is inserted and I open up the plug-in interface. I select the beat and drag it onto the track timeline. (See 3:35 at this Cakewalk video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UquKaN5Ruio if you want to see where I'm dragging from).

When I drag it onto the MIDI track, instead of pasting into that track, it creates 9 new tracks, and on the last track is where it actually pastes the audio. The other 8 tracks remain empty - including the MIDI track that I inserted initially.  I notice when I try a different beat, it inserts a different number of tracks...  But it always inserts extra tracks... some of which are empty.

I did hover over the clip to drag it along the timeline.  While I can extend the clip, the sound doesn't extend with it. i.e., it still stops at the oringal spot.

If it helps to post screen shots, I can do that.  It seems like it should be so much simpler than this :-(

I am very happy to be proved wrong (!) but my thinking is that MIDI data is not clip data. When you insert a pattern from SI, you are inserting MIDI data, not a clip and this is why you cannot drag it to extend it. May I suggest you do something different. First, insert SI drums as a Soft Synth (from Insert / Soft Synth). Then add a MIDI track and set that track to SI Drums on channel 10. Now insert the drum pattern to the MIDI track in the place you want it to start by holding down the left mouse button and dragging the pattern from SI to the MIDI track. Now select the MIDI track and open it in Staff View. You will then see the pattern on the track (you may need to change the Staff layout to 'Percussion' if HS hasn't done it for you). Now copy the pattern and paste it throughout your piece (OK, this is laborious, but it does work! (I copy to eight staves and then copy the eight stave batch)). So, there you have it. I am sure there are easier and quicker ways of doing this, but I use my method all the time and it works for me!

Chad, have you downloaded the 7.0.1 update from Cakewalk support?
Among other things, it corrected a problem whereby extra tracks were created when manipulating MIDI clips.
This seems somewhat consistent with what you are describing.

You wrote that you are getting 9 new tracks.
I'm guessing the first 8 are audio, and the 9th is a MIDI track.
What are the inputs and outputs of the new tracks?
Guessing again, but I believe they are probably not associated with SI Drums, and this is why when you extend the clip, it has no effect on what is played.

Download that update. I think we are chasing symptoms of a bug that has been corrected.
