Newby -- dont understand why I cant hear drums in some midis

I am relatively new to the world of Midis and Sonar Home Studio. Used to use Roland VSC. I have several midi files but I cant hear the drum tracks despite them being there. Is this a sound card issue or am I missing something?

    Is it only the drums that you don't hear? Make sure the midi channels match up -- the midi track and the program/patch in the synth should be the same.

    the drums might not be on the usual midi channel 10...

    it also depends on the midi files themselves if they send patch messages..e.g. play piano on channel 3.. strings on 5 etc.. it might be sending a patch / bank number that the unit doesn't understand..

    if your getting some midi sounds, well your output patched ok..

    what are you using as the midi instrument itself..a VST-i or a real midi sound module.

    Is there any source of basic instructions for people like me. I dont understand some of the terminology and the book that came with the programme is pretty vague.

    there is probably a more extensive manual on the disc..

    Scott's sonar power book is very straight forward , but I'm not sure how much is relevant for your version.. as I understand although it shares some things in common.. certain things are different.
