Newly Delivered System Up and Running....

Well,  I must say this has been an interesting week. My new DAW built by Jim Roseberry was delivered 8 days ago. I spent the better part of two days doing fresh installs of programs, samples, projects, midi, etc.

After getting it up and running, I had three system shutdowns with the message that my system had shut down to prevent damage to components. After being totally freaked out and venting at poor Jim Roseberry (sorry Jim) we found that inspite of the custom installed extra cooling fans directly over the CPU, it was spiking temps up to 82 degrees C.

Jim made some suggestions and I also did a ton of net research on this. This CPU runs hot. The guys on the OC boards know all about it and use water cooled systems to maintain safe temps. A water cooled system for a 4U rack while not impossible, is constrained by space.  I have a custom built rack unit that has a ton of gear in it. I had it all custom wired and neat.  I figured, slide old rack unit out (also made by Jim) and slide new one in.  That did not work due to lack of any space above or below for ventilation.  Since the rack is a 24 unit flight case originally configured with a mixer on top with removable cover, I relocated a power amp. I now have my Alesis R12 (monitor feeds to vocal booth, drums, musicians) in the spaces directly below the top cover.
I have the new DAW sitting on the top of the flight case unracked with all the ventilation it needs. Works like a charm! No temps over 59 degrees with six hours of continuous use.

Now, there certainly were other options offered by Jim, including installing another fan... but truthfully, this seems ok to me. The case he used is a aluminum server case with rack handles and also attached chromed round base feet that make the entire thing quite classy looking.

Speed? wow!!! I can run 24 channel mixes with a ton of VST's at 124 samples easily. Dang!

Bottom line.... what a nice system!

    Steve,

I have a 3930 system built by Jim as well. They do run hot! Mine is in a cube so we had to add some fans! I am shocked how well this thing deals with audio and HD video. quite a change from my old dual core!  Jim's the man!

Worked with it for six hours today. Highest core temp was 62 C.  This sucker runs like a molested simian.

    Hi Steve,

Glad the new machine is working well.

With SandyBridge-E, you have to strike a balance of three things:
    • Expected Performance
    • Heat
    • Noise

    Best Regards,
