News (you didn't ask for) from the front... :P

1 - My physical and blood work for immigration came back A1.
2 - After two months waiting for the results of the test, I learned today that "my boys can swim" and I'm fit to procreate.
3 - The owner of the house we live in finally changed his mind and is apparently now willing to sell if we want to buy. *
4 - November 2014 looks like it could potentially mark my return on stage after almost 15 years. I'm not anxious to get on that stage. To me, playing live is in the same category as taking the plane, colonoscopy or re-installing Windows.
5 - Wife said: New iMac for the studio won't have to wait 'til Christmas. Am I excited?!!
6 - Phase two of sound treatment should take place in a week or two.
7 - The drum kits in Logic X are the answer to all my prayers to Bonham (even though I am not entirely happy with Logic X itself).
8 - I finally found a chorus for a song I'd been working on since last spring!
9 - We may be getting a sixth kitten soon. :P

* Bonus: if we buy this place, nothing keeps us from adopting a dog. Or five... :P I'd start small - a couple of Dobermans or a Rottweiler.  And a German Shepherd. A boxer, too. Bullmastiffs are cool, though - I'd need one... And a possum.

Judging by a summary of all those comments, you may want to make sure that house is BIG enough before you buy!

We've been checking out houses ever since we arrived in Vegas (though until we got the green card, the required down payment was exorbitant) - heck, even before we arrived. But since we moved in here, no other house ever fits as perfectly. There's always something that's not just as right - this is the house we want. And it is just big enough. :)

Congrats Rain!!! Just like SouthWest Airlines, you're now free to roam about the country.
Speaking of houses, I'm actually getting ready to put my Vegas house for sale in Nov. as well......looks to be a good month up ahead.

Good luck with the return to the stage......I'd like to see/hear some of that Jimmy Page Hendrix Iomi Balckmore's Rhoads.

You know you'll need an experienced engineer for that,  I'll PM you my address so you can send the plane ticket.
I have my own web-cam for your colonoscopy...

Then you ought to get a Windows computer and suffer like the rest of us.
Then you can get X3 and look at the what the heck is it that I just bought compared to Sonar 7 which is what I am used to software.

It has played a Sonar 7 song I was working on better than the 32 bit version it is, but then.....................
I am not sure but I may need to be docked. (and suffer some more I guess).

US banks will not use a Canadian credit report.  So everything is hard to come by, credit cards mortgages etc.  Then once you are established everybody wants to give a credit card, 2nd mortgage, home equity, etc.

Sounds like good things are rolling your way, Rain. Happy for you. The green card means a different checkbox in your NSA file is now checked and maybe that black van will disappear from across the street.

But dude, really. Six cats? Oh, you think they're your friends, but you know that if you were to die there they'd eat you over the weekend.

So have you decided what you're going to do job wise?

Getting your green card is great, but in actual fact you'd be surprised how much you can do without one. I lived in the US for 3 years "in the shadows" before I got mine. But I got around a lot of stuff by setting up in business. The IRS is basically a back door into the system. You don't need a green card to get a tax ID and start paying taxes, and once you get a tax ID you can apply for an EIN (employer ID), register a business with the state, become an agent to collect sales tax, run a proper payroll and withhold employee taxes. You can open up business accounts with banks, cellphone providers etc. I was in the weird position of having to demand employees fill out an I9 to prove they were legal, even though I wasn't technically legal myself. Good old USA! Nowhere like it.

All this notwithstanding, it certainly is a great relief to get your papers and become fully legal. So much easier to rent an apartment, and for all you can do with that EIN, the one thing you can't do is get a DRIVER'S LICENSE!

Sounds like things are definitely on the up, must be exciting times! Good for you.

Re: News (you didn't ask for) from the front... :P 2014/10/08 16:21:27 (permalink)
Thanks guys and girls. :)

Technically, we were ready to become parents all the way back in January, but there were a couple of health related set backs for my wife. I also figured it was worth getting tested earlier than later, so we'd at least have that covered.

JR - Exactly. We learned it the hard way when we bought our first car (because, you NEED a car in Vegas). Fortunately this all settled down, and we've traded in the Jeep for a better one w/ much better financing options. And we have great credit now.

SpaceAlf - New iMac means I could technically run Windows on Bootcamp on my MacBook, though at this point, I'm not sure why I would, except to re-open a few songs which were saved as Cakewalk Bundle files. Probably not worth it.

Sharke - I've been working intensively on my portfolio and have made a few contacts, and that's something I'd like to pursue. Writing for film, tv, circus acts, etc... I'm lucky enough not to be under financial stress for the moment, so I can work on doing something I want to do, even though it takes a bit more time and doesn't pay big bucks immediately. Then there's the live gigs with my wife. And I've been toying with the idea of applying for Cirque myself...

But mostly, our life revolves around my wife's career - it always has, and I've always been the "flexible" one, even when it meant leaving a very lucrative job behind to follow her at a time where I was the one w/ the stable income.

Her job is unique and very demanding - there aren't many acrobatic singers out there, and those probably aren't working 10 shows a week AND training every day. So I ended up being the housewife, making sure that she never needed worry about chores or even just prepare a cup of tea.

Since I couldn't legally work, that's how things worked out, me making sure that from the minute she walked in here, she could simply relax. And as we started talking about having a family of our own, it was implicit that I'd be the stay-at-home dad, working little gigs from home here and there.

I guess I could have tried and find a way to make a few bucks, but it just wasn't worth it. I prefer to abide to the rules, especially when we can afford to, and since Cirque takes care of everything, I didn't want to mess things up.

YIKES!! Wife just walked in and said - we're off to the Mac Store!! :) :) :) Hope they have one for me there!

Unpacked and in the process of installing Logic 9 and X plus the extra content.

The display is quite an upgrade from the previous external monitor I used in terms of picture quality and impressively large for a 21.5.

Having an external keyboard will be super nice. I wasn't so sure about the mouse when I saw it didn't have a scroll-wheel. But then I noticed that it was actually a tactile surface in its own right. :)

Furthermore, I just went from 2 USB ports to 4. On my laptop, the ports were allocated to my audio interface and the hub. Now I can discard the hub - external hd, audio interface, midi keyboard are all hooked directly, which mean everything becomes better/faster just with that and since the mouse and keyboard are wireless I have a port left.

The extra bonus is that my MacBook Pro becomes portable again. Not only that, but I can use it as a synth and effect host, and to control my POD HD.

Incidentally, I've had the opportunity to help out one of the Apple folks at the store which a customer asking technical questions about Logic and digital audio... Always nice. :)

10 shows a week? Holy crap. I can't even bathe that often. I'm curious, how much time is she onstage performing during each show? Having to keep her energy up must require tremendous self-discipline. I won't ask if she has any energy left for you at the end of the day.

I'm not sure how much time she is on-stage exactly - she has 4 main numbers on-stage plus voices she's doing from backstage. The time between that is spent running backstage, changing costumes and getting ready for the next number. 2 shows a night, 5 night a week.

Not including make-up and hair and the daily training.

It is a tough gig, very demanding physically, a one of a kind thing even for Cirque.
