delving back into history, there was a time when P5's audio engine was demonstrably more robust that Sonar's
but even P5's implementation of the GM didn't allow for effortless integration of live recording during playback with ongoing playback as Ableton's Live has provided from its initial launch. P5 required a stop, insertion and play.

That may or may not be relevant to the way people choose to use GM
If it's a composition tool, it hardly matters, if you're Imogen Heap on Letterman it matters a great deal.

  That issue aside
I believe a lot of work in the last few Sonar versions was done to clean up the 'gapless' performance of its audio engine. But, of course, I'm not qualified to speak to that.

The preview page suggests that this is in Producer only which is kind of a bummer. I did the upgrade from HS to S8 ( mostly for the P5 vst's - still enjoy Pentagon ). Maybe CW will provide another upgrade path from P5 for us to access the GM. I had just started getting into it and got distracted by FLStudio. So now I rotate around P5 to FLS to Sonar which is distracting but provides the variety of tools I like.

I was intrigued to see the line on step seq randomization for patterns which I really like.

+1 for the P5 editor comments.

But CW should really, really look at including the P5 arp somehow into Sonar.

Now its time to play with P5 some more.

They seem to have included a few P5 effects (alias factor at least) so there may be hope.

Apparently they're also dropping p5's effects in there too.

This is exactly the kind of consolidation Cakewalk should be doing.

I have authentic analog drum machine samples.

Its only in PE though. Very crappy - when I crossgraded from P5 both versions were the same apart from some plugins I didn't want, so I bought SE - so now I would have to upgrade to PE and then to 8.5 just to get back features I lost in crossgrading to Sonar - that really sucks and frankly is not worth it to me. They should make this update more affordable to P5 owners and making the matrix view the only substantial internal difference between the 2 versions is just stupid .

Unfortunately you can't open p5 projects in 8.5, but you can live preview .ptn files in the browser now.
