Nightsward Hill - a new track
Hi everyone. Here is a link to a new piece, I have been working on for a while. The scene invokes winter and snow (I live in a place that has lots of winter). As always I would be grateful for any feedback you might give and the time you might take to listen. Thanks https://soundcloud.com/us...417081/nightsward-hill

Love that little arpeggio you've got in there. Very fitting. The ending sort of petered out though. I was going up the hill with you then reached the top expecting something a bit more dramatic or glorious. Didn't happen. Nice piece though. Regards, Dan

John, Very nice piece. I am in an area where it has been like the surface of Venus lately so a tune evoking cold weather is just perfect! LOL This sounded very nice on my system, a good ride with a nice ending. Good job taking this one to the finish line. Are you a player and a MIDI programmer or more one than the other? I am just curious, I like the nuts and bolts info of how these songs come together.

Thanks so much for listening and the feedback. Feedback from you is always really appreciated because I really respect your work. My dad thought the same about reaching the top of the hill, (my mom disagreed with him). I have thought about how to introduce something more dramatic, but haven't been able to come up with anything that works. Thanks again John

Hi, many thanks for taking the time to listen and comment. I am really glad that you liked it. It has been a hot dry summer where I live too, but our winter is long, cold and snowy. I am glad you liked the ending , I struggled with how to end it, and came up with what I posted. I am not really a player, I work with MIDI and my MIDI keyboard. I play around and experiment and do everything by ear until it sounds and feels right. I have hundreds of bits and pieces that I save to hopefully build into something bigger, or that fit into another piece. So I guess I would be more of a MIDI programmer, but I can't say I really know more than a few basics. Thanks again and good luck with the heat. John

Some songs take time and a lot of patience to finish. Put it aside, work on something else for a while and come back to it. You'll know it when it comes to you. I can understand both perspectives. It really depends on what you are going for mood-wise. On the other hand, there is no reason you couldn't do both; big finish then a peaceful cool down to the end. Just don't stretch it out too long or you'll end up with two songs Regards, Dan

I like it! I think the highlights were the sections where you had the glockenspiel? chimey things? going. It certainly sets the mood of snow. I even liked the epic taiko type drums, as though trees were falling down into snowy explosions, or as if someone were shooting a cannon at me whilst I trudged upward. I think you might take another look at the piano sample, what are you using? It sounded kind of two dimensional (as most piano samples do!) but maybe swap it out, or better yet just add some lengthy reverb to it? It's kind of dry as it is, compared to the rest of the orchestra in the forest, in my opinion. this is a cool piece, thanks for sharing it. -Tom

Certainly invokes that sense of chill. Mix came across nice a clean here, thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the advice. It makes a lot of sense. I sort of did that with Zwiespalt, I changed it after a few weeks, when I found the string sound I was looking for. Now the second half is completely different from what I had originally. I won't have a choice about putting it aside, because today was the first day back at school, grade 10. Summer is just too short.😫 Thanks Again John

This is really moving and visual. Very nicely flowing and well put together. No reason it can't stay as is, but there is a crescendo/climax passage through the 1:00-1:30 time that could work well as a finish, if you are looking for that difference. Just some scissors and tape and you're set! Nice work!

I am really glad you liked it. I was playing around with Rapture Pro and a lot of it is done with it. The piano was from Rapture Pro, (Cinematic piano). The chimey things are also from Rapture Pro. The big drum and some of the strings are from East West. I haven't really explored Rapture as much as I should. I really appreciate the time you take to listen and the feedback. John

That was really good, beautifully put together, and perfectly evoking the scene you set. Enjoyed that very much.

I grew up trudging up those hills. I imagined a winter scene but not climbing up the hills till about 1:40. I am not into that much electronica because much of sounds similar to me, not a bad rap on it, just not my personal preference. This however made me feel good. I loved those hills!
