Nineteen Eighty-Seven (Original Instrumental)
https://soundcloud.com/clintmartin/nineteen-eighty-seven This song has reminded me of the 80's all along so... 1987 it is! The year I graduated High school. I had a few new plugins for this one. The guitar is Amplitube Fender Super-Sonic with Valhalla Ubermod and a touch of ValhallaVintageVerb (mix was up to 6%). I got a deal on Fab Filter's Pro-C. It's on the master bus with about 1db of gain reduction. The master bus used Sonar's quad curve with the pure setting, Fab Filter Pro-C and LimiterNo.6. I tried several Limiters on this one with all giving good results, but in the end LimiterNo.6 is my favorite. I tried the Concrete limiter (which I did use on the bass track), TB Barricade, and T-Racks clipper+Brickwall. The Limiter is only barely doing anything, but it's loud enough in my opinion. Any thoughts or suggestions would be most appreciated.

Hey Clint! Sounds great bro! Lots of nice fretwork in there! I agree with you that it's got that eighties vibe going on. That's not a bad thing though. Lots of my favorite music came from the eighties. Got any lyrics in the works for this? I can definitely hear a vocal melody when I listen to it. Good job on this. Mix sounds good!

Thanks! I thought it sounded like "Hang on Loosely" by 38 special, but I checked...I should be good! Hahaha. Yeah, singing is something I've always done so I'm sure I'll get back to it. To be honest, I'm trying to get some songs in Music Libraries and Instrumentals are what's most requested. The last band I was in was a 3 piece were I did all of the singing. 40 songs a night for 5 years. I just want to play guitar for awhile. Thanks for listening, I always enjoy hearing your songs.

Clint, this is awesome man! Yeah it does start with that 38 Special feel but you took it in totally different directions. Very clean guitar work. The guitar sound is great. Your riffs are tight. Mix sounded very balanced and bright. That is something mine lack. Good job

I like this Muchly...... The lead guitar is too upfront and wide for my taste though and the drums feel too in the middle...the rhythm guitars and bass are right on but the lead takes up 90% of the stereo field.... get the drums more like the Lead guitar and the lead more like the drums and then I`ll ...Love it instead of Like it Muchly.
Whoa.... to you ...oh...earth and sea... for the devil sends the beast with wrath..... because he knows the time is short..... let him who hath understanding..... reckon the number of the beast..... for it is a human number... it`s number is..... 666 So if JESUS rose from the DEAD Does that mean he`s the ORIGINAL ZOMBIE?

Thanks Scotty. I didn't steal it on purpose! Hahaha. I did know it reminded me of something and when I figured it out I went and listened to that song. I'm safe. I am starting to think it's a little on the quite side. I didn't hit the limiter very hard at all. I guess it could use a couple of dbs. Thanks for listening...I like your new band!

First, great guitar playing and I like the song a lot! I wish I could play like that! I echo alkie - once the lead comes in you have to struggle to hear the rhythm guitars - and they're good, don't hide 'em. If you have Channel Tools, put it on the lead track and narrow it a bit (or use TB OmniSone - http://www.toneboosters.com/tb-omnisone/). What are the drums? I'm an old dude, but I think they could use just a touch of reverb. I'd make them a bit wider too, although the crash cymbals are panned pretty far to the sides.

Thanks for the listen and the ideas! The drums are EZ drummer triggered with a Roland Octapad. They are panned, but not much. The overhead mics are panned fairly wide, which is getting that cymbal spread. I thought the drums had too much verb from the room mics in EZ drummer so I turned those off. I'll go back and re-visit this after yours and others comments. The guitars (Thanks for the compliments) are a little trickier to get what I wanted and to still have the rhythym guitars loud. The rhythym guitars are double tracked, while the main guitar has a lot going on. I'm using channel tools to widen the image (7ms of delay on the left side) and Valhalla's Ubermod for a stereo delay and slight modulation. There is a touch (6% mix) of Valhalla's Vintage Verb which follows channel tools in the signal flow creating a slight stereo reverb. In the 80's the snare always had a big lush verb which I never cared for, but the over the top guitar effects were good at times. Chorus, delays and reverbs...kinda out of fashion now, but a slightly retro sound without the splash in the snare was the original idea. Now I just want it to sound good. I'm not tied down to the eighties theme at all. Thanks for the feedback guys...It's really helpful to have your ears to lean on.

Yeah great chops there... Drums are definitely flat to me, no dimension, almost like you have a phase problem with the drums. Very mono and flat. Given that it's an instrumental at this point I think the upfront solo guitar is fine for the mix... only complaint there is too much verb on the solo guitar. Perhaps a bit drier in the verb dept. with maybe more delay reflections instead of verby haziness? The wide chorusy verby sound of the octaved solo line sounds good though. Anyway, great job all the way around. Can we get the tab? :)

They say that great music happens when the composer writes about something they know. So, you clearly had a really fabulous time at High School! This is inspired composition and faultless musicianship. And while my hearing is not what it was (it's never recovered from me leaning against Clapton's speakers in the sixties!) I reckon the mix is better than good. Malcolm

Thanks Malcolmb! I appreciate your comments and I would like to hear that Clapton story sometime! I just watched a Cream documentary on Netflix...I've never been a huge Clapton fan (I of course respect and admire him), but I love Cream. I wish he would have stayed on that road awhile longer.

Clint, This sounds just fantastic. I might brighten the lead just a tad and widen the drums a little bit, but minor nits there. Playing is quite remarkable.. Like it. Regards
