No MIDI option under Volume Control!
Ive found one posting that's exactly my issue but Im thinking I need an external usb/pmcia sound card perhaps. Im using: SONAR7, XV2020 and HP/Compaq Laptop w/ XP32bit - sound card is built-in Conexant AMC Audio. All my MIDI tracks are recorded and now having read and understood about creating an audio track and muting the MIDI tracks to be recorded to the audio track.....I see that under my volume control options for recording I do NOT have a MIDI option like the SONAR7 book says.....anyone see this and could recommend solution would be highly appreciated!! Thanks Folks! DB in NJ

Hi there Dean, welcome aboard. I'm not quite understanding your question, can you tell me the page/section in the manual you're referring to. There are some real MIDI experts around here who should be able to help you out, but some of them don't use HS7 - I might be able to recreate your problem. Steve

Well I dont have the book in front of me but its the last chapter dealing with creating audio track and then ripping to CD. I can choose my output which is my sound card to record the midi tracks but under Volume Control Properties from my desktop and the options for recording there is no MIDI to select. If thats not too clear I be home within an hour to get eaxt page reference....lol....thanks though for reading!

All my MIDI tracks are recorded and now having read and understood about creating an audio track and muting the MIDI tracks to be recorded to the audio track..... If you're using a softsynth for the MIDI tracks, you can either Edit-Bounce to Tracks to create an audio track or you can just select all of the tracks and File-Export them to a WAV file. You should not be muting the tracks unless you don't want them to be on the final mix.

you'll need a decent soundcard for sure, the onboard card in the laptop is nowhere near good enough for recording.

IN the SONAR 7 Power! The Comprehensive Guide Chapter 14 page619+ "Converting your MIDI TRacks" 1. INsert a new audio track an assign the input for the track to your sound card's stereo input. For instance, if you have a Sound Blaster Live! card, set the track to the Stereo SB Live Wave Device input. Also, activate the Record option for the track. 2. Mute any tracks in your project that you do not want to convert. 3. Open your sound card's mixer controls by 2x clicking the small speaker icon in the Windows Taskbar. 4.Choose Options > Properties and click Recording in the Adjust Volume For section of the resulting Properties dialog box. Thn click OK to bring up the recording mixer controls. ***5. Activate the recording source for your sound card's line input(s) by clicking the appropriate Select option see Fig 14.4. You need to activate your sound card's line input(s) before you can record any external MIDI instruments.(This is where I don not have the Line-In column to select....!) Sorry I thought it was MIDI, but I dont have that either... 6. Besure the audio outputs from your external MIDI instrument are connected to the line inputs of your sound card.(I have a RolandRD170 going thru XV-2020 then USB to laptop and MIDI tracks are fine in SONAR saved and playback) 7. CLick the Rewind button on the toolbar in SONAR so that recording will start at the beginning of the song. Then click the Record button on the toolbar in SONAR, and yor MIDI tracks will be recorded to the stereo audio track. So no Soft Synths used, do I need an external USB type sound card or something else you think....or I am missing the boat all together!?!?!? Thanks all again!

But you say all our midi tracks are recorded? So you already have midi tracks with midi data in them? If that's so, then as long as the output of the midi track is the related synth track, you should be able to select both of those and bounce them to track, (edit > bounce to track) creating an audio track. But I must be missing something...

Ok. Lots of important information in your last post. The USB/MIDI connection transmits only MIDI data. This is essentially electronic sheet music. You need to connect the audio output from your sound module(the XV2020) to the line in of your sound card. You mention that the line in is not available, so this may take some trouble shooting. What driver mode are you using? Conexant is marginal at best, and may only support MME. You say MIDI tracks are fine, saved and playback. What does that mean exactly? Can you hear the MIDI tracks play? I'm just trying to get a clear picture of what you have happening. Any information you can share, even if it seems unimportant, may help us help you.

So no Soft Synths used, do I need an external USB type sound card or something else you think....or I am missing the boat all together!?!?!? Well, you should get a better soundcard, but you should be able to get started with what you have. Let's work with one instrument at a time, say the RD170. In order to record from both the RD and XV at the same time you either need a soundcard with multiple audio inputs. As RobertB said, you need to connect the audio outs from the RD170 to the input on your soundcard. That will probably require you to purchase a special cable. The RD170 has two 1/4 in mono phone jacks for output and your computer probably has a single 1/8" stereo miniphone plug. You can get an insert cable or a "Y" cable from your local music store or try www.musiciansfriend.com on the web. Once you have that connected, all you need to do is arm an audio track to record. When you press the record button in Sonar, it will playback the MIDI tracks you recorded on the RD170 and and at the same time it will record the playback from the RD170 onto the audio track.

Daveny5 and RobertB: Thanks guys! To respond to some of your questions: My setup, and now have it in my signature by the way, is: RD170 (MIDI OUT) to (MIDI IN) of XV2020 then USB to the laptop. The XV is set to pass-thru and I setup SONAR with the .ins file for the XV2020. But yes, I can record from SONAR fine, with each MIDI track created I can choose different sounds off the XV and as I record I use the RD170 to play whatever beats, bass, sounds I need. The upon playback I hear everything recorded ok. I also forgot to mention that off the XV2020 I have powered speakers(KRK ROKIT-5), Those have RCA outputs that need to be plugged back into a soundcard so SONAR can record to the audio track. That was also in the last chapter of the book. But you guys are correct I dont have an adequate soundcard.....I have look online and Roland has the UA-1G(USB) Audio Interface which has RCA connectors on it as well Edirol's UA-1EX USB Audio Interface. and I think my problem will be solved. Mamabear: I did not get a chance to try (Edit > bounce to track) but the midi is not related to any synth tracks? if I stated that correctly and I want to say I;ve tried long time ago and it didnt worked but again I'll see again. So, I think Im on the right track and there's some good music stores around here that would have those interfaces and if you guys read this and think its correct way to go also that would be great. Thanks again!
