No Midi Device Found

I am newbie and have recently installed Sonar 8 on my PC (Vista 64-bit). I can't play any midi's because sonar 8 does not detect any midi device present. If I use other midi players on the same box, I can hear the sound. Checking the midi output configuration from the other software, it is using the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth, but I can't even see this in sonar. I have a realtek integrated sound card and also a properly connected fast track USB M-Audio interface.

Can someone help?

Thanks!

    Welcome to the forum:

    You have to choose MME drivers as they are the only ones that expose the MS Wavetable Synth in SONAR.
    However;
    In SONAR you don't need to use the MS Synth. Its sound quality is inferior to what is available in SONAR 8 with the use of softsynths that are included. Please read the tutorial section of the Help file to learn how to use them. Especially the tute's on MIDI, Audio and How to insert softsynths.

    The real issue for you is that you wont get very satisfactory performance with your on board sound chip. SONAR is a top end Digital Audio Workstation and works best with a sound card that has good drivers written for it. While the on board sound card promises High Definition and surround sound its results when used with Pro software is far from ideal, again mainly due to the performance of its drivers. They are best suited to game play and processing the audio from CD and DVD etc.

    When it comes to manipulating software in real time and processor demanding fx etc they lag behind.

    If you must continue to use it I recommend that you Google 'ASIO4ALL' drivers and install them and use them in preference to your Realtek drivers. It will also provide you with low latency and the possibility of using ASIO which in your case will be the preferred driver model to use.

    Though you could play midi using Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth, this is not normaly how you would turn the midi into sound in Sonar. Also, the sounds of the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth are very generic and do not sound that good. Instead, you should insert a Soft Synth. You can do this by choosing Insert/Soft Synt and choose one. For starters try the Cakewalk TTS-1. Make sure you have these options checked on the Insert Soft Synth Options dialog box...

    If your using Sonar 8 uncheck the Intrument Track option or what ever it is...

    This will create two tracks, a midi track where you will input your midi and an audio track that will play back the audio generated by the soft synth.

    In Sonar 7 there is a tutorial that shows you how to do this in the help file. Press F1 to open the help file, expand the Tutorials topic and choose Tutorial 8 - Using Soft Synths.

    Cut that Realtec lose form sonar and download the latest drivers form EMU and use ASIO only. do not use MME. Realtec is Realcrap
