Welcome to the forum:
You have to choose MME drivers as they are the only ones that expose the MS Wavetable Synth in SONAR.
However;
In SONAR you don't need to use the MS Synth. Its sound quality is inferior to what is available in SONAR 8 with the use of softsynths that are included. Please read the tutorial section of the Help file to learn how to use them. Especially the tute's on MIDI, Audio and How to insert softsynths.
The real issue for you is that you wont get very satisfactory performance with your on board sound chip. SONAR is a top end Digital Audio Workstation and works best with a sound card that has good drivers written for it. While the on board sound card promises High Definition and surround sound its results when used with Pro software is far from ideal, again mainly due to the performance of its drivers. They are best suited to game play and processing the audio from CD and DVD etc.
When it comes to manipulating software in real time and processor demanding fx etc they lag behind.
If you must continue to use it I recommend that you Google 'ASIO4ALL' drivers and install them and use them in preference to your Realtek drivers. It will also provide you with low latency and the possibility of using ASIO which in your case will be the preferred driver model to use.
