No Midi Sound

HS4 XL: When I go to Options > Midi Devices, I only see PreSonus FIREBOX midi and Microsoft midi mapper. I have no midi synth connected to my FIREBOX. As a result when I try and play a midi file I get no sound. I have an older verion of HS2002 on a different computer and I do see MicroSoft GS Wavetable. Midi works on this one.

If I inset a DXi synth I do get some sounds on some of the channels but they don't sound like drums and Bass as they should. I'm trying to follow the tutorials. Normal audio works great.

Do I need to do something to get the MicroSoft GS Wavetable onto my system with HS4?

Thanks,

Martin

That's because you don't have a MIDI synth. Not all soundcards do. If you switch to MME mode (Options-Audio-Advanced) you will get the MS GS Wavetable, but its not very good. I recommend you use softsynths instead of switching to MME mode.

I'm not familiar with softsynths. Are they similar to Cubase VSTs (I've been using that for the last few months and am now trying to convert to Sonar). I did see a post here which described inserting DXi. I tried that but it didn't do what I was expecting. I know that this is a simple setup issue, and once I see what needs to be done will be pretty obvious to me. Thanks for the help.

Take the tutorial on Using Softsynths. What version of Home Studio do you have? Only HS2004 or newer has the VST adapter, otherwise you're limited to DXi softsynths.

I've got HS2004. Just installed it yesterday. Sat down to dilligently go thro' the tutorials and got stuck on the fact I had no midi sound.

So, Dave, was I on the right track trying to insert the DXi's - Is that a softsynth?

HS 4 XL comes with several "soft synths" (synthesizers that reside on a computer as compared to a hardware box sitting in your studio.)

Try the Edirol--I think that's the one used in the "Using Soft Synths" tutorial.
Once you insert the Edirol, and click on the tab at the bottom right of the main program screen, and click on the box that lets you edit the sounds in the Edirol---you'll be able to select your bass, drums, whatver else you want.

That will be your synth to play MIDI. Everything you need, that you're asking for in your post, is right there waiting for you in the program.

Open up that tutorial. You'll get it.
