No, No, No (DoWop)
Back awhile ago, someone on the forum (maybe the TexRat???) tried to get a challenge going. The idea was that within a given period of time, participants were to write, record, and post a song from scratch. I can't remember now but I may have been the only one to join in by submitting a song. It was a pretty rough number and I hadn't yet been educated in the art of recording/mixing by members of this forum. Anyway, I dragged out this song the other day, and thought that I might try and clean it up a bit. I have tried to model it in a style that would be reminiscent of Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, the Students, and/or Lewis Lymon and the Teen chords. It still is a bit rough but hopefully it is a wee bit better than the first time. I hope that I captured just a bit of the spirit of the era and that you get a giggle from it. As always comments, suggestions, crit's, etc. are appreciated. Thanks. [ No, No, No http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_music.cfm?bandID=963481 Freddy J

The echo on voice is a bit too much, so it kind of introduces some timing problems because it causes some collisions. Otherwise it is nice and fun song.

Freddy - I have to agree with Vicente about too many 'repeats' on the echo/delay. I'd back off a teeny bit (only my opinion of course) Great, retro vibe and I like how you've got 'that guitar sound/playing' sealed tight!! Your Doo-Wop bgv's always make me smile man. I hate to ask, but..what was that noise on the end???

Retro indeed, and a fun listen, but I'll also vote for dialing back the delay/reverb.

Hi Freddy, I remember this one. A sweet little tune... and you did bring out a lot more sparkle with the new mix.

Great job on the vibe Freddy. The drums in the intro were too "clean" for that era. I'd wash them in verb. But that's just a small nit.

Loved it, really caught the sprit of the 50s. Only crits would be just take a touch of delay off the vocals and throw in a guitar solo as well. But that's just cos I like guitar solos! :-)

Hey, Freddy, Dynamite job on this very cool retro DoWop number! Really great playing, authentic sounding mix, and perfect vocals and harmonies for the genre. I really loved the slick little guitar lick at the end. I might agree with Vicente and Larry about maybe backing off the vocal delay just a touch, although that's really a matter of personal taste, and you've really accomplished a wonderful, traditional 50's-60's sound. It immediately brought to mind Dion and the Belmonts, and maybe even ShaNaNa. Excellent work, Freddy! Bob

Hi Frank: Thanks a lot. I'm glad that you liked it. Thanks Scotty. I was reaching pretty far back in that dowop alley. Hey Vicente. I appreciate the insight. I went back and opened the working file and played it with just the vocals. You are absolutely right the echo could come down. However, not all of the timing can be blamed on just echo. I have to admit that I got out of sync in a couple of spots in trying to match the various vocal tracks. Thanks again for the feedback. Thanks for the kind words Warren. Hi Larry. Thanks for commenting. Yup, I have to agree with you and Vicente -- my tendency for the abuse of delay shows again. The noise on the end --- aw shucks, I was just playing --- I thought I would throw in some Robin/Coasters highjinks. I'm glad that you had fun with it Phil. Your vote is gratefully accepted and recorded for action in implementing delay reduction. Thanks for the feed back. Hey Robby. Thanks for the comments. I didn't realize that you could read and write 1950's dowop jive talk. Holy rama lama ding dong!!!! Hi Janet. Thanks!! It is fun. The best part is that there is always something new to learn or improve upon. My learning curve is still exponential. Thank you Rick. So you are the one that listened to it when I posted it the first time (lol). Thanks John. I'm glad you had fun with it. Thanks Alan. I'm glad I got close to the style. I see that you can read and write dowop jive talk also :>) Hi Dan. Thanks. I appreciate you taking the time to comment and the kind words. Thanks Gary. I went through a phase where I listened to a lot of dowop and was always hoping that I could attempt something like this style. BIABDude. I appreciate your listening and commenting. Thanks. Hi James. Actually I did get parts of this from the radio and 45 rpm singles. Groups like the Teenagers, Coasters, Flamingos, etc. also contributed. I think that we are influenced by what we listened to. Thanks for your comments and see you down at Mel's Diner. Hello Bapu. Thanks for the comments and feedback. I hadn't thought of the drum sound but the trap sets were certainly more sparse than today and the sound was less full also. Good thoughts. Hi Paul. Thanks for taking time to listen and comment. I definitely will be going back to the working file and will see what I can do about that delay. Also, welcome to the forum! Thank you Bob. I always appreciate your insights and I definitely have to back off the delay. Thanks again. Freddy J
