You have very distinctive style which is all yours, I really like this.  There are elements of the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band to your music which is nice and quirky.  Thanks for sharing well worth a .

This is a great song!  My suggestion would be to turn up the drums.  Your voice is so strong and clear that you can make the drums the second loudest element without taking anything away from the total.

I'd get some variety on that snare pattern, and bring the bass up a ton so it can counterpoint things.

Now the good stuff - it's a great song with great lyrics, very cleanly sung, vocals at once hushed yet out front - simply superb mixing there! And your chord changes are inventive in a genius-like manner. Which would be enough, but you add such awesomely idiosyncratic melodies to them, and then the sublime vocal phrasing.

Each listener wants something different but I'm finding I'd like your rhythm section work to come up to the same level as the rest of it. Not too flashy, just more in keeping with the overall genius tone! Right now, for me at least,  your incredible originality is being supported by a drum machine, like a QY-20 or an Alesis SR-16, with one pattern employed.

If you were a band, I'd fire your drummer, cut the bass player's pay in half, and take you directly to Hollywood or Nashville or New York, which I think is where you are already, so nevermind.  :)

So that's just my .02 but thanks so much for sharing and do keep it up! Really great songs!

Leave it alone.... I love it just the way it is, The lyrics are excellent and that's what I was listening to all the way and the little fills where brilliant. Excellent use of instruments and for once I like the drum sequencing and tone of the kit is perfect for this style. I'll even forgive you for going overtime ( 3:20 Standard ) as it never lost my interest.

No, I don't play out. I wouldn't know how to go about it, and I'm sure nobody would want to hear me. You're (this forum) the only people who've ever been subjected to my nonsense. Most of my family have never heard me play a song. And I guess they're showing their good taste! :) So, heaven forbid I should ask strangers to listen. It's a lost cause. But something made me start posting here. Maybe so I can think I did something in my life. Ha!

good is good laura.  It don't matter if you're a pimply teen ager or a middle aged amateur.  I'm not one of those who think all expression is necessarily good.  There's definitely good, better, best (and the other direction).  Your stuff is very, very good.  In a town like Portland, Austin, Nashville you might actually be able to have a career.  :D:D

Thank you, Tom (emeraldsoul), for taking the time to listen and to respond so thoughtfully. You make some really helpful points. About the bass: I did think of including a bass part at one point, but ultimately decided that I liked it better without any bass at all. There's just the left hand of my quiet piano chording comp (and the occasion bassoon) in that range. Maybe that wasn't the best decision.

Thanks again for all of your comments - I really appreciate them.

My first and perhaps most important comment - I was not disappointed.

I can only echo the sentiments above which I've used before as well, your unique style shines through on this one.  The interesting chord progression + melodies + clever lyrics, the quirky arrangement, the pauses for effect, and the airy yet strong vocals... it just works.   And this one does have a bit of an old time "French" feel to it for me, if that makes sense.      But I am curious - who has been a naughty boy?

This is great stuff from start to finish. I couldn't stop smiling when listening to this. The mix can be better, and the drummer... but it doesn't matter when listening to a unique song with a brilliant arrangement.

    Hey stevec

It's really good of you to take the time to post such a thoughtful review. You write really well - you choose your words with such care and manage to convey your message very clearly while putting a smile on the reader's (ok, my) face  <--- like this.

"Who's a naughty boy?" Well, that depends on who'd like to be, stevec (I don't even know what that's supposed to mean, but I couldn't come up with a clever answer).
