No Windows laptops have bus powered 6 pin Firewire?

Hi everyone,

I have long been puzzled why no Windows laptops have bus powered 6 pin FireWire interfaces? They only have non powered 4 pin interfaces.

All Apple laptops have powered 6 pin interfaces. I know Apple invented FireWire. Could there be a patent limitation?

One can buy desktop motherboards with powered 6 pin FireWire interfaces but no laptops.

I wish I could find a laptop manufacturer who could answer this question.

I maybe totally wrong on this, but I think firewire uses a higher voltage than USB. Something around 6-7V for USB and 12-15V for Firewire.
It may be as simple as that.

But as you say, if Apple can do it I don't see why other manufacturers can't. I think that Joe Public probably still buy USB products for their PC's.
I always try and buy drives etc that have both options. Still seems a lot of new PCs only have one firewire port if that.
