No display showing "sound on sound" or "overwrite"
In all versions except X1 of Sonar there was a display showing whether "sound on sound" or "overwrite" were selected. In 8.5 I see it in the large transport punchin section. I use "sound on sound" sometimes especially when I want to record a piano sustain pedal event that was lost during an autopunch. I want to know whether "sound on sound" or "overwrite" is selected, because if I forget to turn overwrite back on then it messes up my recording, recording "sound on sound" instead of "overwrite" Not only is there not a display but it's awkward having to open the Preferences window which Can't even be resized and have to deal with that bulky thing, just to see whether "sound on sound" or "overwrite" are selected or to change the settings with a macro. I know I can right click on the record button to also see the record mode, but it's hard to set up a macro that chooses "sound on sound" or "overwrite" if there's a mouse involved. There should be a way I can access those settings with the main menu at the top of the screen. With 8.5 it's under transport/record options. Or at minimum those choices should be included under "extra commands" under key bindings.

Try "Ctrl R" Can't recall if it's a default or a keybinding I set up myself.

Control R default is to arm all tracks. What happens when you choose Control R?

The Record Options dialogue box appears with Sound on Sound and Overwrite as the first two options. It's under Project/ Record in Preferences. This keybinding appears to be the default - I'm on 255.

This keybinding appears to be the default - I'm on 255. Correct and that's exactly what I mentioned in the original post. In all versions of Sonar there was a display that showed you what mode you were in, either overwrite or sound on sound. This display is on the large transport in 8.5. To have to open the big bulky Preferences window and leave it open in order to see what mode you're in doesn't make any sense. It's clearly an oversight by Cakewalk to not have any toolbar showing this. I hope they reinstate this lost feature.

But you dont have to. You RT Click on the Record button on the transport! Thought you were after something quicker than that. I have CTRL R as a shortcut as well - but it's possible that that is unique to me as I imported my preferences from 8.3.1. Sorry, a misunderstanding.

Previous versions were just fine, why make it worse? I'd also put the auto-crossfade status indicator in this category. Previous versions had the button that showed you the status. Now you have to go in a menu to see it. It's a step backwards in user interaction.

I used every version since the DOS days. X1 is the first version I seriously considered using this opportunity to go to another program, since the relearning curve is so high and bugs have prevented me from using it to replace 8.5. I'm all for adding more features, but it's senseless to lose any feature and functionality.
