No luck with Groove Quantize
I rarely can seem to get Groove Quantizing to work (in any version of Sonar—currently X1). This is what I'm doing (for instance): - In the Piano Roll View, I draw a steady HiHat pattern of 16th notes, say 4 measures worth
- Manually tweak the velocities in the first measure
- Select the tweaked notes and copy to clipboard
- Select the last three measures of the HiHat pattern I want to apply the copied velocities to
- Open Groove Quantize and click "Audition". Now I can see a preview of the velocities that are going to be applied and I can visually tell they're wrong by a wide margin. Sometimes I'll apply it anyway thinking/hoping the preview is maybe just wrong. But it's not.
What am I doing wrong?? I even looked up the process in the manual (like, a dozen times over the years) to confirm I'm doing it right. I usually end up giving up and doing it all by hand. Finally, after trying this in X1 and seeing I can't get it to work there either, I'm seriously thinking it's me. Is it?

Are you trying this with two Hi Hat patterns that are not exactly the same rhythm?

Thanks for responding, Wave No, it's a steady run of equally spaced 16th's. The pattern is exactly the same from measure to measure.

Are you selecting the clipboard as the source for the groove information? Otherwise, it could be using information from the installed .GRV files. Have you also adjusted the Strength values to Full? -e.B

e.B After copying the source notes to the clipboard, when I open the Groove Quantize dialog, "Clipboard" is already pre-selected as the source. Resolution is set to 16th's, I've played around with the sensitivity setting starting at %100 and working back, and have tried different settings on the strength faders. I could never get this to work in SP5 either (my last previous version) so if you and others are not having this prob, then it's got to be something I'm missing...

Looks like it will only work on clips. So by doing it in the PRV is where you may be going wrong. Also, time and durations should be set at 0 and velocity should be set at 100% (to copy just velocities). Let me know if this works.

@Wave (RE: #6) Well, that seems to have worked! So I'm supposed to be selecting the entire clip, rather than just the notes I want copied to the notes I want quantized. (BTW, your method does work in the PRV—I just have to make the selection in the time ruler rather than lasso selecting just the notes I want. Not sure this way will work for what I want to do, though. What if it's just the HiHat I want to be consistent, not the kicks and snares that are melded in there as well...? If I have to select the entire clip won't all the other drums in the clip be groove quantized too? (not my goal.) Regardless, kudos to you for figuring out the "secret"!
