No more bakers!
So if Sonar become Sonar by BandLab, there's no more Cakewalk, so no more Bakers. So what do we call them, now it's BandLab? Are we collectively the LabRats? Professor Noel and the Scientists? So many big decisions with this change over

Amongst the assets they purchased are trademarks and the Cakewalk name. The new website is cakewalk.bandlab.com and shows the Cakewalk logo (trademark). So it looks like Cakewalk Sonar by Bandlab. So I think the Bakers will remain bakers and won't become lab technicians or mad professors anytime soon :)
Splat, Win 10 64bit and all sorts of musical odds and sods collected over the years, but still missing a lot of my old analogue stuff I sold off years ago.

I personally can't see them keeping the Cakewalk part in the name, as 'Cakewalk Sonar by Bandlab' seems a marketing mouthful, and being it was twelve tones originally and cakewalk was the program name before sonar, then 'Sonar by Bandlab', 'Bandlab Sonar' or something seems mre likely to me. And when all the rebranding is set up they aren't really tied to the website name cakewalk.bandlab.com.

I like Sonar, I think it is a good name and has held the test of time. Cakewalk on the other hand is a terrible name, and old fashioned, from a horrible history.

Just occurs to me that the name would probably stay intact but the ownership will obviously change. Sonar Platinum by BandLab sounds fine to me. Why would anyone change a brand name, but rather amplify on it? Sounds like basic business sense to me. I certainly wish them well and will indeed be onboard.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Brian! Much appreciated :) What a relief to have SONAR* back! It's been awesome to read so many positive comments since BandLab came to the rescue. I'm delighted, and very fortunate, to get a another shot at working on it - and I don't plan on wasting it! Can't wait to see how this new chapter pans out. Bring it on! *or whatever the next version is called!

I have a hard time believing the SONAR name won't carry forward because of brand recognition. I am pretty sure I saw that Cakewalk was not acquired, so that is truly gone. Variants would shift most likely just to break the lifetime update agreement, and maybe some consideration for a cooler acronym than Splat might occur.
Splat was incredible foreshadowing in hindsight.

Ought to be interesting regardless. Also interested in how they will run the update process as subscription-based or one-time fees every 2-3 years like Ableton. Every year is ridiculous. And I wonder what the entry-price of Sonar will be? Maybe not Reaper cheap, but hopefully not Cubase/Live expensive.

I agree, Sonar still sounds modern and relevant. Cakewalk (while I'm a huge fan of the products they created) has been a dated brand name for a very long time now. I would always use the name "Sonar" when talking about or recommending the brand.
