No playback in ASIO Driver Mode // Roland m200i REAC console

Do I need to purchase a digital interface in order to playback my recordings?  I've tried every driver mode with no luck in regards to hearing playback via my computer.  ASIO is also the only driver mode that recognizes my REAC inputs.  I've spoken with Sonar 3x and Roland 3x to no avail.  I even reinstalled Sonar X3, which took 3 hours.

Hi, Andy, I was curious about your console so I went to their site.  They made available various drivers and remote softwares so that you can wireless connect your computer to the console. I'm not sure this board uses Asio drivers, they recommend REAC Driver Version 2.0 for Windows 8, 8.1 and 7 (http://www.rolandsystemsgroup.com/products/100098#.U7yC4bH-ITA).  My impression is that this board is more iPad oriented but they state that you can use Sonar X3...  What is you setup?  How are you connecting the console to the computer?

Your best bet is to get a recommended sound card /interface. Anyone of these will do, just find one that fits your needs; MOTU, M-Audio, Focusrite, or RME. They all have drivers that work well for audio programs, such as Sonar

It's been a while since I've looked at any of the REAC stuff, but from what I remember you needed to use one of the supported interfaces that had a digital connection to monitor. The FA-66, Octa-Capture, Quad-Capture, VS-700 were all options and you'd syc them up to your board.

Roland Systems group really should be qualified to help you in this matter. Did you speak with them specifically or just Roland.

Best Regards,

I do have the updates REAC Driver Version 2.0 installed.  I've run a cat5 from the REAC out port to the computer.  I've patched every input correctly and I do received signals to each input via Sonar X3.  However, based on the responses and the links I've read, it seems there is no way to listen to playback unless I purchase one of four different digital interfaces (Roland Quad-Capture, Roland Octa-Capture, Cakewalk FA-66, or Cakewalk VS-700 R) that are compatible with Roland's REAC m200i console.  This is all to unfortunate considering I came into this expecting to be set for multi-track recording with Sonar X3 exclusively.  Now it seems as if I will need to spend a couple hundred more, even though "Danny" from Roland Systems Group insists I should be able to playback via my computer speakers.

Hi, Andy, you're probably right; Seth kind of confirms this in his post...  Maybe, it's a silly question but did you connect your speakers to the console or to the computer?

I'm simply connected to a CAT5 from the Roland board to the laptop.

I was wondering if you had to place them in the console's rear pannel main output...  At least, it's what I'd try to do but I'm just guessing.  I hope you can resolve this issue, soon.

AFAIK, the REAC connection is one way into the PC. Since it uses the ASIO driver mode in SONAR it would take a special driver to add audio out of the DAW. The ASIO specification permits the host access only one driver for I/O at a time. This is why there is no connection to the PC audio out. Since it takes a special driver Roland is in the position to require an additional interface of their manufacture to monitor the audio from the DAW.

The console has 2 main outs plus some others that are assignable.  It's a pity that these main outs don't  serve for playback Sonar...

There would be a huge latency from SONAR. There should be no need to monitor through the DAW, if I have read the docs correctly, the REAC connection to the PC is intended for audio capture only. Monitoring the mains (directly not the return from SONAR) would be similar to the near-zero latency monitor most interfaces provide.

I understand.  Well, at least, the console seems to be a very good device to record live...

Yes that is the point of it, Most people use them in Churches and such and only want to capture the service then edit and re distribute as a stereo podcast or CD's. If your wishing to use it in a studio set up then you need the addition of the interface. REAC is a Roland thing that no one else uses so guess what, your stuck with a Roland interface.
It's a very cools system used as intended for live performance.
Those who wish otherwise purchase mixers that use common audio digital formats so that different brands can be intermixed. .
