No sound from PC after adjust metronome volume in X1. *FIXED*

Started a new project trying to record an acoustic project. The mic was picking up the metronome from my headphones so I lowered the volume on the metronome bus and did some quick test. Out of the blue the metronome stopped putting out sound like it was muted. I raised the volume back to 0db and it started working. I lowered it again to around -8db and all of a sudden I got no sound output at all. None of my projects in X1 will produce sound, Windows Media player and Winamp put out no sound either. I tried reloading my drivers and that didn't help. If I open up X1 and enable input monitoring, I hear what I'm playing over my headphones and monitors but nothing else puts out sound. Right now I'm dead in the water ...

WTH? Any thoughts on this short of a format/reinstall? :(

Well - if you also missing sound from the Windows Media player ad Winamp, there is something funny going on with your sound card(s). If you are using two sound cards (one on-board and one external fast track) take a look at what sound card/channel/output is configured as main output in Windows. Also check if you did not by accident made a digital output (sp/dif etc.) the main output.

I don't know if there is a configuration panel for the Fast track, but take a look if the above is also configured right here.

As a side note - I heard rumors the M-Audio drivers did some funny things in combination with Windows 7 - 64 bit. I have no idea if those things where solved or not (or even if this is true). It might be a good idea to take a fast look around on the M-Audio forum...

    Hope this helps...

For the record, I never had issues with the maudio profire 2626 and win7 64bit. the Fast Track can be a little wonky, but I thought I'd seen someone else report this problem with the metronome. It works fine for me, so I can't really comment.

Have you tried maybe changing the metronome sounds? It's a stretch, I know. Never know.

It almost sounds like you have a gate on the metronome. You could try routing the metronome direct out your outputs instead of through the master bus and see where that takes you.

If something zapped your sound card Manually power it off and back on.  If you started up sonar while it was off it may have left your Fasttrack unchecked in the audio input/output section of your preferences.  Also, a startup with it not being active will likely have set all your track/bus outputs to a default of either -none- or your on board card.  Check the outputs at the bottom of console view and see where it says they are going to.

    I have/had similar issues..
metronome would only work sometimes.. (latency@1024 and midibuffers@1200ms), the system was pretty stressed and I had to globaly disable the effects to record new tracks. sometimes the metronome would be clearly audible during recording, sometimes it would just stay dead silent. I think I lowered the volume on the metronome as well..

I also had some weird and annoying issues with my audiointerface, it would stop working with windows mediaplayer and so on, while it would still work in Sonar! (ok, a bit different than the OP scenario). I tried all kinds of stuff to get rid of that behaviour and it seems that only and finally some rme beta drivers got rid of that annoyance! I come to believe that some windows updates messed up the soundconfiguration. I found another rme user with the same problem and I wouldn't be surprised if this problem is not only limited to rme users.
I'd guess that a windows-backgroundapplication blocks an audiochannel,.. the audiodriver can't access the same audiochannel at the same time: silence! RME and their new beta driver can now dynamically access the same audiochannel, which means that 2 applications share the same channel but you still get sound.

Fixed it. I had to completely uninstall the FTU driver and reinstall it. Working like a charm again.

    Hi Mike,

I'm on the latest driver ... although I have to say, the last beta driver worked better for me. You have to be a member of the Maudio forum to get access to the better drivers in case you're looking for them in the download section. They aren't there.
