No sound out of new tracks.

So I am working on a song. I need a new guitar track so I create the track. Yet, when I play, nothing is coming through. I could see the soundwaves, but there is no sound. The odd thing is that when I click to the existing guitar track, and hit the echo, I can hear my guitar. But when I do the same on the new tracks, I get nothing. I am looking over everything, and it appears that everything is as it should be.

I then tested things by jumping to another song I had worked on, and I am getting the exact same thing happening. Any ideas?

This happens to me from time to time..... be sure all the inputs and outputs are correct.... if they are.... try a reboot and if the audio interface is NOT powered by the computer...... be sure to let it reset to by powering it down and back up.

My Saffire looses it's comm link and it takes a power down and back up again to get it working again. It may not be necessary to reboot the computer... try shutting down Cakewalk....reset the interface and restart CW.

What I found out was that I wasn't able to click on the UA-1G for my input sound. I am still not too sure what is going on, but I found a temporary fix. I cloned the working guitar track, then deleted the guitar that was recorded. Thereby I had a clear track for recording.

I have been able to do what you mentioned at first, shutting down and rebooting. That was the first thing I did.

By the way, a BIG thanks to you, Beagle, and the others who spoke highly of MC5 when I was asking about it. I am getting very close to finishing my first song. I have been writing it on the fly, and constantly tweaking drums, bass, everything, as I go along. I am amazed just how easy this program really is to use. The best $40 I think I have ever spent! The sound is great, the program is a breeze to use, and I am just in love with this thing.

The recording would be going MUCH faster if I wasn't being set back by these damned dropouts. I'm looking into how to fix that problem. I see on another thread that a seperate hard drive is recommended.

yes, a separate hard drive is recommended for your projects/audio to be recorded on.  but I don't think that will solve this particular problem.

unfortunately I think it's a matter of your particular soundcard hardware and your computer and the way it deals with USB.  if MC (and your windows) is "losing" your soundcard then that's not a hard drive problem.

I used a PCI soundcard for many years.  they are very very stable and that's the route that I prefer.  when my PCI soundcard went bad I decided to go with a more portable unit and bought a MOTU Ultralite MK3 Hybrid (USB or Firewire either one).  I was concerned about having hardware issues like you're describing because several people have problems with USB devices like this.  but there are just as many who do not (maybe even more).  I have not had a single stability problem with the MOTU.  But I paid $500+ for it!

I think what I'm trying to say here is that you get what you pay for.  if the soundcard can't stay stable on this system, you might have made a bad choice of soundcards.  I realize I helped you with that decision, and said that it should be fine, but it wasn't my first recommendation, either.  the cheap soundcards just don't have the stability that the mid-range priced ones do.  I will always recommend a USB or Firewire card that costs at least $150, or a PCI one that starts at $100 for the best stability.

(even herb has some stability problems with a $300 firewire card!)

Eh, I knew I was taking a chance when I bought it, you warned me sufficiently. I was buying to see if I would want to spend more money down the road. This song, and how happy I am with it, confirmed to me that I so want to drop some money on this stuff. After I get my pre-amp this week, I will be starting to save for my steps up. I do think the hard drive might help, as when it happens I am seeing my CPU usage jumping to 40+%. That number is also growing ridiculously as I am adding tracks. I do have an external here, so I will be trying that. Can't hurt to give it a shot. Looking for a better soundcard will start, though, right after I hit "post message."
