Noisy HD solution #9479343739 - this could work

Just came across this solution:

Fits into a 5 1/4" bay, and houses a 3.5 " and makes a big difference apparently. New shop in town here, must check them out. They specialize in silent and cool. German firm, originally.

Wacky... Looks sort of like a shock mount for a hard drive. Go buy one and tell me how it works!

Well, I suppose if that doesn't work you could always put it in one of THESE!

i could see that thing cutting down the resonance through the PC case but the motor whine and spool up/spool down I doubt would change much. I mean if you boot your PC up with a loose HDD in your hand you can cover it completely and still hear the motor spin up to speed. not that i have ever done that, of course. you could pack the inside of your case with auralex but your heat sinks wouldn't dig that too much.
it seems the best you can do ( besides having your computer in a "tape" room or a separate booth ) is to run a quiet CPU cooler, fanless video, and run external SATA drives out & away from quiet areas. like a little foam shelf on the back of your mixing desk with some sound absorption facing them but not blocking airflow at all.

    Rolf,

    Ich bin ein Berliner?

The new SATA 3Gb/s drives are surprisingly cool and quiet to run. I have two in my DAW case (Antec P180B), and cannot hear them, nor the power supply fan, nor the 3 case fans, though the case is just beyond my left foot (under the desk). If I put my ear to the top fan, I hear a small whirring sound -- but why put my ear to the fan?

Why not pick up a new 750 Gb Seagate (currently $110 US at the site NewEgg.com -- amazingly inexpensive), and perhaps a new case for your DAW (more expensive, unfortunately), instead of the external box.

No need to answer -- I probably won't check back. Just wanted to plant an alternative idea, in case you found it useful.

Good luck (or Gud glück -- though I'm sure that's wrong :#)

Crossed my mind as well just before I dozed off, had a nice vision of a HD being catapulted into your systems' innards. Marvelous. Either that, or it probably dries out in a year or so. Rubber does that. Anyone with a pushbike knows rubber doesn't last. Then again, maybe it's *not* rubber.

@ uncle meat - argh my secret addiction, Belgian chocolates.

@ Clydewinder - all good points although I think I'll go for a big tower with like 7 very slow, very silent fans. HD's do trip me up tho, they don't make 'em like they used to. Can kick PATA/IDE for all you want, they weren't half as noisy.

@kwgm - actually, no - half Frankfurter, half Wiener. How'd you guess? Yeah, get the quietest components to begin with, good point.

This may make it quieter but it certainly won't help the heat dissipation that normally goes into the Case through the Metal to metal contact under the screws. Sustained Audio will make these drives run quite warm IMHO
