Non-Keyboard Genesis?
For whatever reason, I have always loved the song 'Silver Rainbow' off the Genesis album that followed Abacab (Genesis?). Anyway, I don't play keys, so I decided to try to cover it as a guitar-centric rocker. I had to "reimagine" a decent amount of stuff. Anyway, here it is. As always, any input is welcome. Tell what doesn't work...and enjoy. https://soundcloud.com/cy...ilver-rainbow-master-1

I like that song a lot too. I think it works pretty well on guitars overall, there's just one thing I miss - Tony Banks does a lovely turnaround phrase after the 'coming or going' bits with a whistle synth sound. It's a little thing but it made the song for me. Wouldn't be too hard on the lead guitar

funny you should mention that. if you are talking about the 6 note thing that precedes "beyond the silver rainbow" and follows it, I know exactly what you are talking about, and I could not get it to work at all. It is in there. I do the basic chords of it on the right side guitar, and a lead version is buried in there too, but I could not get it to sound even close to right. As a result to chorus is kind of weak. Verses sound pretty cool, but not the chorus. Not really sure what to do.

It's the little turnaround phrase he does at 2:21 in the vid below, then after each chorus, it leads beautifully back into the verse riff.

Yeah, I hear it. I think I tried to do that, but I must have buried it or misplayed it. That whole chorus translated a bit weird for me. Thanks for the listen though!

First of all, thanks for covering this song. Been a long time since I heard it, and I think it translates well into a guitar-centric tune -- and that comes from someone who always loved the Tony Banks keys. I don't have a recollection of the turnaround James mentions, so your version stands well on its own. Congrats on achieving a difficult translation!

Thanks! It was real fun to do. Reverb.com had just done this cool thing on the production of another Phil Collins song, so I even tried to do some Collins gated reverb that I learned about on the vox. That was a new one to me....

* * * * * 5 out of 5 stars. Nice interpretation, great performances, clean mix, energetic and just loud enough with all the microdynamics intact. I'd like to hear a little more definition in the bass (meaning: distortion + lower midrange boost), but admit it wouldn't have the same period feel. It would also be nice if you could work in that electronic "snare" hit that's in the original. I'm normally not a big fan of synthetic percussion, but in this case it's a tasteful little bit of ear candy typical of the Collins aesthetic. If those "chisss" hits are too cheesy for you, try substituting something inventive like a reversed handclap sample.

Thanks Bit. Appreciate the comments. I would love to give you the snare you are talking about, but it is just too 80's Collins. I went for the straight up rock drums sound to go with the guitar-iness of the song. Thanks again for the listen.

I liked it!! Always liked the original version too but haven't heard it in years. I think your version works nicely... it has that album's general vibe but with a more straight rock feel that suits it well. Vocals sound great.

Wow, I totally forgot I used to dig this song. First off, kudos on that vocal performance! Fwiw I listened on headphones, and found the bass disappearing a little. You might boost some bass a little around 400hz or such, so it can translate a bit better. I thought all of your performances and played parts were very strong, and better yet, mixed with care. Great job! -Tom

I think I speak for many here that the one thing we want to hear more than anything is MIXED WITH CARE! I spend more time sweating a mix than I do anything else, by far. Even realizing 9/10 people won't pick up that I used a volume envelope here, or a dash more reverb there, I love tweaking a mix. Really nice to hear someone notice a well loved mix. Anyway, thanks TOM for the best comment ever!

Very cool! Love when the strong guitars come in after the light opening.
